Is there some way to reduce the amount of memory hair takes

I know that the realism might be impacted but I have some hair that more than triples the size that a character on disk. While still keeping the hair, is there a way that I can reduce it's size?

    If it is strand based dForce hair, set the Line Tessellation to 0 (viewport and render) and apply an Omni hair shader to get the right look. Line Tessellation is in the Parameters pane.
