Why can geometry shell emission shines the environment?

I added a geometry shell to a character.
Set emission color and luminance.
It just make the geometry bright, but the light doesn't affect the environment.

    What sort of environment? An HDRI is not really there to be affected, it is a light source and optionally a visual element added behind the rendered items but it isn't actually 3D to interact with the lights. If you mean the light isn't doing anything, is the Environment Mode set to Dome and Scene (or Scene Only if this is not using an HDRI)?

    Either the environment needs to be dark enough or the emission luminance needs to be bright enough... otherwise the emissive effect won't be significant.

    Hemm, okay I add more value to luminance and now the environment is affected.
    But it's not quite the look I'm looking for. The geoshell is too much bright.

    Another question. How to make a source of light to emit rays of light.
    Let's say a light ball radiating rays of light.

    In addition to adding / tuning Emission, maybe you can turn on Bloom filter at the same time...

    Mmm... not as I imagine it.

  • Are you wanting "god rays" - the effect of seeing a light beam where it shines through clouds or a window? For that you need something to selectively block the light (so that it forms distinct beams) and and a  dispersive volume to catch and scatter the light so that it can be seen - there is a dispersive water or glass shader preset you could take a starting point, aplied to a cube (with light and camera outside the cube).

    If you aim to make godrays, i.e. volumetric lights, you may check the product liket this : https://www.daz3d.com/epic-props-godrays-volumetric-light-for-iray or make "volumetric geometry" yourself that lights can pass through.

    That seems some brush effects in post-work. Making that in 3D may need a prop with radiance mesh or a mask map in Emission.
