It has become evident to me that the behavior of the mouse when moving objects into the scene is very awkward and needs to be fixed...

When moving a small object, it is not as much of a problem, but when moving a larger object like a giant VDB cloud or a giant plane with a HDMI image on it, the amount of accuracy needed to keep the mouse at the zero position is impossible to maneuver. The object you are attempting to move using the objects coordinate system jumps back and forth at the slightest bit of deviation from zero.

It would be much easier if you wanted to move the object into the scene if you were to left click on the arrow you wish to move in/out, and if you would drag the mouse up from the zero plane it would move the object into the scene and if you would drag the mouse down from the zero plane the object would move out of the scene.

The larger an object is, the slower it moves when using the world coordinates to move it. This makes moving a large object deep into the scene nearly impossible. Almost every scene I make, some sort of object requires being moved deep into the scene.

 

Perhaps a series of scripts that would translate objects into the scene would work. Each time you click the script it moves the object another thousand meters in or out and/or along an axis..

  • Moving large objects a big distance is occsionally a pain.

    What I tend to do is zoom the top camera to the entire scene (eg an Ultra Scenery terrain) and then select the large object and translate it using the X/Z arrows there. The movements are scaled to the visible size in the camera in use, so it moves much more with a large camera view than when the camera view is small.

    An alternative is to type in new parameter values. 1km = 100,000 cm, so you could add that into the parameter value. A final alternative is to go into the parameter settings and change the X/Y/Z nudge values for the cloud/large object to something like 100,000 cm. In fact, it'd be good if the PA set it to 100m/1% of the object size themselves for really big objects.
