I'm slowly assembling a visual novel, and acquire what I need to tell the story, if I don't have it already in my library of available assets. I do make stuff myself on occasion too.
I've been here long enough that I don't need anything, so I just buy what I want - which is typically items that are unique or interesting.
When I started using Poser, a long time ago, I was always finding that I wanted to make a picture but didn't have the clothes, props or scenery for it. I got into the habit of buying stuff trying to extend the range of scene types I could render. I really should have stopped this when my library became big but I still do it. And sometimes I see a new item and think I could make a great scene with that, so I buy it. I don't often buy full price items but sometimes I decide I really need a particular item. Of course I don't actually need any of this since it is just a hobby for me.
