What do you use shaders for?

What fir instance does this shader do in a scene? Sorry screens hot on another.puter

they show in sales as croquet balls with differing surfaces  does that change an actor's face or clothes or what?

  • A shader preset will affect al selected surfaces on al selected objects, unlike a materials preset which affects only soem named surfaces. Shader presets are used for materials that are more general purpose - things like fabrics, which can be applied to anything made of or covered in cloth, or stone, which can be used for any kind of stone object (though there may be issues at the places where the mapping joins). The "croquet ball" is inended as a shape to show off how the material appears.

    A shader, which can be aplied by any material or shader preset, is a chunk of code for the render engien that describes the details of how a surface interacts with light - most shaders will have proeprties that can be adjusted, and saved to presets.
