Has this thread gone to sleep?
I was wondering that myself. I guess everyone must be busy with other projects at the moment, but I hope it revives as this is one of the best threads to learn texturing, great project and step by step help and lots of individuals jumping in with help and ideas :)
I am so looking forward to texturing human figures part! : )
Personally, I'm still working on my homework with the tower. I've been a tad busy with lots of stuff. I think DestinysGarden and hubby just finished up a big project. Not sure if she's gotten into a new one yet or not. I'm sure she'll pop in when she gets a chance to come up for air. I'd love to see it continue, too. It's been fun and I've learned a lot already!
I was so upset that I couldn't figure out what to do with that great set of textures that DG posted for us, that I just dropped the whole project on the spot and haven't been back since.. I D/Led the file, but it won't open with any program I have.
It just says "This file can't be opened."
That's not helpful...
Are you saying you can't open the zip file or you can't use the files that were unzipped? I didn't have any problem using the textures in Paint Shop Pro. (Photoshop would work too. And no doubt GIMP as well.) Then I imported the obj file into Daz Studio and applied the mapped texture that I created in photoshop and applied it to the castle.
Perhaps if you gave more details, somebody might be able to help you. What file are you trying to open? What program(s) are you trying to open it with?
Hi Guys! Sorry about going MIA. I had a small crisis last week, but I didn't forget about you.
dHandle, I would also like to know if you couldn't unzip the file I sent you. If you can unzip it, it should just be a folder with a few .obj and .jpg files that can be opened/used in almost any program.
DestinysGarden,
File you sent me?
One sec...looking...
Nope..nothing in my personal email; nothing here in PMs...
I will try sending you an email...er...a PM. Sometimes this place is a little wonky.
Kharma, today is your day. I don't apparently have the fantasy collar for Genesis 3 female, but I do both the mask and collar for the males. I'll use those for the demo, and I hope that is OK. Did you have a particular style of necklace and headpiece in mind?
Stay tuned while I work up screen shots.
This is something I am very very interested in as well....
Pardon the baby steps here. Scroll to the next post if you already have your texture templates, or know how to make them. I'm running through the process again for the sake of posterity and completeness.
Texturing clothing-making templates
Load the item you want to texture in Daz Studio. Make sure it is the only item in your scene. Go to File/Export. You want to Use Existing Groups and No Maps.
Open UVMapper Classic and Load the model you just saved. File/Save Texture Map.
Repeat the process for the fantasy collar.
If anyone bought this product http://www.daz3d.com/uv-tailor it will allow you to generate the texture templates from within Daz Studio, and you can skip the UVMapper step. Either way works.
Back to Daz Studio, I have my Genesis 3 Male in the scene, with the items I want to retexture. I have put the new texture templates I just created in the base color to help me see what parts of the texture template relate to the clothing on the model.
That is it for the prep work. Moving on...
Looking at the back of the collar, this is going to be a bit of challenge to get the outside seam to match up. I'm going to put the necklace join at the place marked here.
I have opened the template in my image editor (and made a copy of it and closed the original so I don't accidentally save over the original) and marked the polygons where I want the join to be. I saved the image and put it in DS and here is the test render to check the placement.
Whew! That looks pretty good. When it doesn't go so nicely you get to do a fun dance of adjust image, test render, adjust image, test render until everything lines up. It can take a while.
So now I know that I can do anything I want with the rest of the map, as long as I leave the outside edges alone. This map is symetrical, so that will speed things up,as you only have to make a pattern for half of the map, and then you can mirror it. Here I have loosly selected around the loop of polygons that match my end points and filled it in with black, and test render.
Works for me.
One last step, I've given him a manly gear shape for his necklace.
LOL, one more final last step - invert the black on white image from above, and make it white on black. This is the map that goes in the Opacity or Cutout Opacity. I made the base color a brown shade, put the metalicity to 1.0 and this is the result.
Now that our guy has a cool new necklace, let's get him some head gear to go with it. We don't have any seam matching to worry about on this one so it should be really straightforward.
Here I have the mask template, and I have made an ellipse selection (shown in red) over most of the face. This template is really cool. Look how nicely the points are laid out around the eyes and stuff. It almost looks like feathers. How nice of them to give us such clear guidelines for where to place stuff.
Anyway.... I have also cut a small notch out of the top of my elipse so that we can get a point over the forehead.
Here is the shape I'm going to use overlaid over the template, and the opacity map.
I don't really need to do anything else to this, so let's try it out on our guy.
So there we are. Of course you can do much more interesting things. One more example for you. Here I have arranged some pearl and lace elements as I wanted them on the templates. To make the opacity maps I simply duplicated the layer with the elements, adjusted the brightness/contrast so that the elements became completely white, and then put a black layer underneath.
I must say the chin stubble really adds to lacey effect, LOL. Much easier than texturing a whole tower, don't you think?
Please keep images resized to display at max width 800px on the forum page.
I'd be delighted. How do I do that while embedding them?
here
If you want them to then show as full size when someone clicks on them you go to the 2nd tab (the one that says "Link") , paste the image location again and then target as new window.
Cheers Cho! Sorry to be a bother. Thanks for the info.
No problem. It's just that people use so many different types of devices to read the forums, and the autosize function displays badly on some, with squishing on the width for some reason.
Baby steps are exactly what I need lol. So just to be clear once we have it uv mapped and figured out where the joins are supposed to be we can then move it to photoshop (or whatever our image editor of choice is) and basically add whatever we want to it there. How or where do we save our finished template? Just as another image and browse to the folder we put it in and plop it into the right spot? Or can we somehow put in as a material preset (which I also have zero idea how to do)
Save the finished picture as a jpeg, and browse to your folder, correct. To save a material preset is dead easy. Go to File/Save As/Material Preset, choose what you want to name it and where you want the preset to be saved. DS used to default to saving presets you make in the Presets folder of your content library, so that is as good a place as any. You can leave everything checked, but uncheck Compress File at the bottom if you think you might need to open the thing in a text editor someday.
Destiny thank you for this tutorial!! I just seen it today as I haven't been focusing much on the forums the past few days. I didn't have any particular style of headpiece/necklace in mind when I suggested it, just the technique in how to go about the process and this is right on the money!!
@DestinysGarden Thanks, DG, for those baby steps! I love learning new skills and there were some things in there I didn't know. I have to say, also, that I've been applying what I've learned here, so far, in my latest new user contest entry as it has required a little bit of retexturing. I wouldn't have been able to do some of the things I've done with that without your willingness to share! So, thanks for that, too!
Two questions...
how did you create the notch in the to of the ellipse? It looks so perfect and symmetrical.
And how did you apply the pearls to the neckline? I suppose you could clone and plane them one at a time. Or maybe fit to path might work?
Thanks.
Kevin, the pearls came in a strip like a ribbon. For the necklace, I just placed it on the map. For the headpiece I selected and rotated small sections to get the shape I wanted. I think I had about 20 layers before I merged them together. If you have some kind of decorative image hose, that would be perfect too.

Check the various 3D stores for merchant resources of embelishments and the like. I was looking for the ones I got here, but they don't seem to be in the store anymore. The specific one I used for my example is called Bobbie25's-Lace and Jewels which I can not find in any store, so it was probably purchased through the old ArtZone store. The elements are shown below.
I was hoping no one would ask how I cut the notch out of the elipse, lol. I did a slightly convoluted process. I hope screen shots are worth 1000 words.
Easy, right?
Kharma, I'm so glad it was what you wanted.
KM, I'm happy you are finding the thread useful, and I'm going to go check out the new user's contest thread.
cheers!
Ah, well, don't get too excited! :) I'm still working out some kinks in those textures.
LOL KM. I promise not to get too excited.
You know Kevin, it occurs to me while looking at my screen shots, that a much easier solution would have been to just draw a bezier curve for my cutout. The take away here is that if you are doing something symmetrical, you only need to do half of it, then duplicate and mirror for easy perfection.
I was about to ask why you didn't.
I once spent a couple of hours modelling a perfect bend in a pipe and then realized it would have been much quicker/easier to use a curve, sweep a circle along it and then mirror it. Five minutes.
There is always more than one way to do something...some are quicker/easier than others, but often it's either we do what we are most comfortable with or continue with what we were doing at the time.
When you export out of UV mapper is the only choice bmp, or is there a reason for using bmp as opposed to jpeg? So I think I figured that out when I exported the option was bmp but the size was 512 x 512 so I changed it to 2000 x 2000.
