Q: How to get a transparent shadow in a render?

Hi,
I have a tree positioned on a white plane (could be other color than white, it does not really matter).
What I would like to have is a render of the tree with its shadow, without the white plane appearing in the render.
I also want the shadow to have a transparency alfa value, so it will be partially transparent when the file is viewd in image editing software.
Can it be done somehow? Thanks.

This is a job for shadow catcher !!!
Apply a shadow catcher shader to your white plane. Under Top Shader select Lighting Models/Shadow Catcher, and you should be good to go.
