Help with hair

I'm sure it's been discussed before, so forgive me - but what do I need to do with hair in order to make it look more realistic, instead of a weird looking mass on top of the model? So the question can be better understood for what I'm showing here, the lighting in the scence uses a preset that came with the scene which includes UE2 (set to occlusion w/soft shadows, 65% intensity with full occlusion samples), Specular only, specular spot, one spotlight and a linear point light. I'm not sure how much that matters, but can anyone help?

First, make sure that if there is a bump or displacement map included with the hair that it is a) applied to the bump, displacement or both channels and b) make sure that it turned ON. Depending on the shader being used that could just mean a non-zero value for strength or it could also mean there is a button to turn it off/on, in addition to the strength value (Ubersurface shaders usually have both).
Then make sure, in your render settings that your shading rate is UNDEER 1, preferably down around .2...
Then do lots of spot renders.
Thank you for the advice. I am basically happy with the scence I made, but the hair was just really bugging me. There are actually three girls in the scene, but this was just cropped to show the hair issue. I'll try what you suggested and hopefully I'll get better looking hair than this.
