hexagon: symmetry tool created inside-out object

I created a loop in hexagon. Then I created a mirror image of it using the symmetry tool. The attached picture shows the problem.  It looks like the loop on the right -- the new one -- is inside out relative to the one on the left.  Why did this happen and how can I fix it?  Thanks!

The normals are fancing the wrong way, the Orient Normals tool is in the Utilities tab. Using the (A)ll option press your spacebar till all the arrows are facing outwards.
