Dawn of a New Day...
June is upon us. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is in full swing. Gardens are growing, birds are singing and it all starts at the crack of dawn. Need to run off to that secluded fishing hole to pursue the 'big one'...you'll need to up before dawn, so that you will be casting at the break of day! Off to the beach...nothing beats traffic like an early morning departure.
Think of all those fun and some not so fun things that can happen in the first light of the morning. Even if it's just to catch those first rays breaking over the horizon.

Here's my first entry.
It's early morning, and you've decided to take a dip in the hotsprings near by. As you travel through the woods to the spring, you hear hauntingly beautiful singing coming from thayt direction. Carefully, you make your way to the clearing, and the spring comes into view, you behold a "goddess" bathing in the pool. How else would you describe her. That slender yet voluptuous body, long, silver hair, and, as she turns to look at you, those eyes, like pools of murcury. She looks over her shoulder at you, completely unphased, and with a seductive smirk she says,
"Care to Join Me?"

No less than three Dawns in this picture ! Sunrise, Hivewire's, and "of the dead" !
You'll have to work a story out for yourself. But to give you a clue it started as your usual bunch of zombies chasing people, going through all the popular variations on the theme (mmm... brains! Monty Python *gumbies "My brain hurts!") ... etc ... when the zombies spotted the camera they did that cool slow motion walking towards the camera cliche stuff (even zombies think that looks cool) before eating the cameraman ... more variations on the theme (sort of World War Z meets *Cirque Du Soleil)... a spontaneous performance of Number Of The Beast... more variations on the theme (throwing records,zombies falling in love)... the Time Warp Twist dance ...more variations on the theme (rat monkeys, hover mowers) ... and Dawn woke up and realized it was all a dream !

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my image from the judges? I'd like to enter another contest but I'm not sure how you guys judge. I notice that none of the winners did any post work - I did quite a lot of post work on my image, does that hurt my changes of winning? Do you guys prefer images with no post work? I also noticed all the winners used 3Delight as apposed to Iray, do you guys prefer 3Delight images? I'm pretty new here and this is my first contest. I'm hoping to join in another contest but since I'm not familiar with the way it works, I would be happy to get some feedback if it's not against the rules. If you feel that feedback would give me an unfair advantage in the future or something, then I understand. :)

I'm not one of the judges obviously, since I'm a participant. But just some comments about you comment. When you are talking about winners, do you count HMs as them too, because my render (HM1) had postwork done (added mist and did some tweaking of lighting) and even though I don't know judges preferences, I can say that renders with postwork have even won these challenges. Also you're saying that none of the winners were Iray, though where you got that idea is beyond me, since mine was an Iray-render (I prefer Iray for my outdoor renders, because of more natural lighting). Maybe you thought it was a 3Delight-render, since none of the freebies I used were Iray-specific. Since I'm just a participant, I have no idea how judging works, personally I just do 1-3 renders for each challenge and hope for the best.

Jonttex - I don't believe that diva was complaining or that she meant any offense. She was simply asking how the judging works. Unfortunately, only the shadow knows.
Everybody likes to win, but I believe the best approach is to simply have some fun with the challenge and let the chips fall where they may. Trying to second-guess the judging in order to produce a winning entry may be a challenge, but I don't believe it will be much fun - especially when it doesn't work.
Whoohoo! Third Place! I didn't expect to win anything this time because I myself didn't like my entries much. But I am not complaining, of course.

I never took any of her post as such. But since she said all winner renders had no postwork and weren't Iray, I just felt like commenting on that, since mine had and was.
Diva, since you asked for a critque here are my thoughts about your submission. Remember these comments are my opinions. You can consider them or disregard them. I do like the color choice of your image. The firey red and icey blue are very eye catching. As part of a composition this is a very strong tool to use. I think though this is just the first step in achiving the oh my look. I would turn on the rule of thirds guide view that DAZ provides in the Viewport. This is just a trick to get the artist to think of placement and should be considered as just a guideline. The intersections of the four lines are considered the interest points. There are more complex methods an artist can use to develop the composition of the image but the rule of thirds is a good start. With that in mind if you take your image and apply the rule of thirds to it. As I have in the attached image you will see that the blue dots are where the intersections of the lines are. You will also notice that your points of interests, the face of the girl and the chimp, are not aligned with these points. I took the liberty of recroping you image to move the girl's face near an intersection point to show you what I am talking about. I think that by moving the camera to place her face in one the intersections resulted in an image that now evokes a greater sense of her wonder. So with that move I think that I would move the chimp so that he is looking over her knee at the crystal. Maybe have the chimp touching the girl to add more variablitiy in the story that is being told by the image. Something like placing the chimp's hand on her knee or the chimp's head resting on her leg. I think I would also reduce the size of the crystal, just a bit, to bring the balance and focal point back to the girl.
When I was a judge for this contest, I looked at composition, lighting, how well the artist had mastered the various elements of a render and did the artist capture the concept the contest was presenting for the month. I think though is that it is better to concentrate on making art that you think is good. Do an assessment of what you think your short comings are and then try and learn how to improve them. I would highly recommend participating in the new user contest. I found that participating really helped me focus on some of the things I was doing poorly. You have access to people that can provide you with feedback for many of the elements you need to master to get that "Oh My" response we are all chasing after. And always remember, just because you did not get awarded a prize does not mean that your image is not good. A test I do to see if I think an image I rendered or of any other's, is good, is to ask myself, Would I put this on my living room wall.

Ah, sorry Jonttex, it has a bit of a 3Delight look to it - my mistake. 3Delight has bit of a distinctive and unique look to it, and you captured that look in your images, imo. :) Sorry for the assumption.
