I see there is still no great way of attaching or re-sizing images on this forum like there was on the old one... or am I missing something obvious?

You use the Attachment thing below the typing screen, when you post a new message.

You can attach up to 5 images, Attach the first, the click preview post and the field clears so you can then attach the next one.

Images can be much bigger now, up to a max of 2000 pixels I think it is.

They resize for the forum, but then clicking on them will bring up the full size in another window.

In photoshop you can save the image one step lower in quality (from 10 to 8) and an image that is 1024x1280 will go from around 3 or 4 megs down to about 800k (not approximate) and you can't even see the difference. I use this setting and when you click the image it opens in a new widow full size....all very quickly and helps Daz save bandwidth space too. (Just a curtousy to them.)

    Thanks for the information!

Another forum related question. Is anyone else having problems with the "smileys" on this forum? Did I forget to check something on my preferences? When I click on smileys, instead of the expected array of yellow cartoon faces in various phases of schizophrenia, I get the window below.

I have the "enable smileys in this post" check box clicked.
I have tried it in different browsers (and different computers)... firefox gives me the image below, chrome & explorer show me the generic "image goes here" icon.
:-S ( I literally see the word "confused" here... does everyone else?)

Smileys are currently broken - it looks like somebody forgot to copy the files to http://daz.emailstar.com/images/smileys/ after some system maintenance.

Thanks Rob! I've checking browser settings and trying different computers... thought I was going crazy. Ok I admit it, I am a little obsessive / compulsive... can you tell? :- P

I would like to bring notice to something here. I have noticed a lot of you folks are getting most of your freebies from Sharecg and/or Renderosity. It is easy to just go to one place and downlod a bunch of free stuff to use in an entry. The idea here is to go to various places and gather up freebie links. Back when this challenge first started, it was required for you to get your freebies from different places and you were not allowed to use more than two or three items from one site. Some of you now get all your stuff from Sharecg and Rendo, then talk about how hard you had to work to get your entry together. Back then, you really had to work to get accepted. We are looking for a variety of sites to be visited by the folks here, not just a couple of community sites.

So, I want you to all know that when an entry is judged, the variety of where your links point is taken into consideration along with other things. Shadows is another thing that is considered. No shadows can mean possible layering, which is not allowed in the rules, (but does not always mean that). Some just don't use any shadows, and it hurts your entry. So, shadows is considered also in judging. Theme is also considered. Some folks post entries that really have nothing to do with the theme of the month. They just throw a few freebies into a pile and enter it, or use a render they already had done from some past day and dig up the freebies they used. So, theme is also taken into consideration during judging for winners, that's why we change it each month. Also lighting is taken into consideration. Where you place them, how many you use, what directions you use, etc. You have to get creative with all this stuff to get a great render to enter.

These are some of the things that are taken into consideration when we select winners, so the closer you stick to these things, the bigger chance you have to win. This is why we say it's such a tough job to judge these entries.

Just some helpful info for you all.

    :-)

I agree music. maybe we need to resurrect the rule about limiting the freebies that come from the sites to maybe 2 or 3 like we used to. I see it too in some renders. I put top priority on if you follow the theme as well when I host. In fact many great renders have been passed over due to lack of theme content.

The rules already say that... but the rules also specifically except ShareCG and Rendo.

I enjoy the thrill of the hunt, even if sometimes it can cause some unintended changes to my planned image (such as this month - I wanted Steph to be in a swimsuit, not a summer dress). Also, spreading the net widely means a wider selection of options, and listing the freebies can show off sites that otherwise would never be mentioned in the forums because of obscurity or some other reason... and I think that's a good thing.

that is the point rob, and YES it is a good thing to get people to put effort into it. that is what the "challenge' is in the contest/challenge. Before music set the rules in stone per-say, there was a rule that had much discussion about not using just one or two sites for your render. We used to require you to only get a max of 3 per site which made people make an effort to find things, not just easy peasy go to one or two sites and call it good, in fact I thing we frowned on using too many from the same site and disqualified people who did. We have gotten laxed about this rule lately and maybe need to re-enforce it again.

While diversity is a good thing, restricting the use of items from ShareCG and Rendo will devastate the challenge. Most people I encourage to participate cite the fact that it is too hard to locate the freebies as it is. Restricting the locations even further would be a disaster.

Rob is correct that the rules already limit the number of freebies except for ShareCG and Rendo, and in the forums the use of a single provider's were further limited.

Limiting things further is a VERY BAD idea, IMO.

that's true Kendall, but if people use mostly ShareCG and Rendo then they really haven't made much an effort in finding free items have they.

While it may be true that the "effort" wasn't there, are we looking to expand the participation or restrict it even further? New people are already reticent to join the challenge due to the effort finding the links causes. Adding further difficulty will not encourage more participation.

Maybe a published "point system" needs to be instituted for each criteria. Certain number of points are allocated for following the theme, number of unique freebie sources, lighting, etc. Have the judges deduct points (make it standardized) for each deficiency.

ok..... now you got my head spinning with too much confusion. If people don't want to put the effort out then there are many contest that DON'T require listing of items used. We want to encourage people to join the fun, but not at the expense of losing the meaning behind the contest. We have a great bunch here and the more the merrier I always say, but the more the merrier doesn't mean that we should cater to the new folk that come here. I will NOT got off on a rant here but I am getting annoyed with the many in this world having to cow down to the few to make everyone happy (special interest groups just piss me off sometimes if you can't tell). There is a happy medium in all things and I feel that following the concept and idea that this contest was built on is far more important that offending the few that want to join but not go by the rules laid out in front of them. I guess I did go on a mini rant. Most of who host and judge are suppose to go by these criteria when making their final decisions every month. If they aren't... they aren't paying attention (another pet peeve of mine).

Perhaps we might want to require freebies from at least four different sites? That way, even if somebody does load up on ShareCG and Rendo freebies, they'll still have to find at least two free items elsewhere...

(I picked four sites because of the maximum of three freebies per creator - if you're avoiding the big two sites, you'll need to visit at least four sites in order to get ten freebies.)

Difficult to avoid ShareCG, it is after the biggest and one of the safest sites from which to gather freebies of all sorts.

A lot of small and independant freebie makers put their freebies there, because of that. It is a site full of freebies and nothing but freebies.

I will put my voice if I may. share cg and rederosity are moslty and commonly used for freebie dystributions. a lot of freebie makers who cannot afford to sustain their sites are using share cg. Freebie challenge is about fun, and creativity and showing that you can make great render with offerings from all over the community. Also a chance for one to get know some fantastic freebiemakers.
As for efford about serching for freebies, sometimes you can go trought every site, and will end up with renderosity or sharecg, since the needed freebie is only there availible.

you are right Krissy, many have gone to these type of sites because the cost of maintaining their own is costly. But I do thing we have to make a limit on how many we use from these sites. some (and not you) have become lazy and don't want to look for freebies. I think if we make a limit on how many we use from sites like ShareCG and Rendo and the others, that we can still use these sites, just not make the entire scene from doing a search from one or two sites and then making your render. This is why we made it a contest/challenge instead of just a contest like so many other site are doing. The challenge is to "find" the items to use and the contest is to make a render using them that fits with the "theme" of the month. I don't want anyone to think I am singling them out in my comments. This is just an observation that I have seen lately. Please take NO offense by my words. I am not talking about a single individual, I'm talking about anyone who falls under this category.

Though this sounds a bit more complicated, I definitely think this idea has great merit. I agree with everyone that it is getting tougher and tougher to find freebies from independent sites. I see a trend of more content creators uploading their freebies at ShareCG for obvious reasons stated above. I would hate to see less participation because of restrictions on numbers of items from a particular site even though they may be from different creators. But I also agree that since this is a freebie hunting challenge of sorts, those gifted freebie hunters out there who make the extra effort to search for those gems buried in the far corners of the internet should also be given credit for their work. Perhaps this can be implemented in the rules for the next months contest. It would be unfair to those who have already submitted this month to have the rules changed in the middle (ok... almost the end) of the game.

Good to see everyone discussing a challenge issue, that helps us grow and get to know each others thoughts about the contest. Robkelk indeed has a great idea about the use of at least four sites in an entry. Jeeperz is right about not "cowing", there's that word again...mooooo!...to the newbies. The idea is for them to come into this challenge and learn the ways, not have us learn their ways. Kinda like a kid who runs his entire family and parents...not good or healthy for any of us. Kendall is right about not making it harder, but it has gotten so easy now compaired to how it used to be, that even harder is still way much easier. Even a painter artist has to go through tons of mistakes, paints, moods, experiences, etc. to get that one famous painting. Like maybe painting a chapel ceiling lying on your back for years!!! If he had taken the easy route, the painting would have just been another painting. The painstaking work is what makes the painting real art. We do not expect the entries to be Mona Lisa, just an entry that shows creativity with the limits of only using free stuff...ah, but somewhere along the line, someone talked us into letting folks use bought items, so there goes the creativity with only free items out the window.

I did not mean to stir up a hornet's nest, only to keep everyone focused on what this contest is really all about. There will always be a render better than yours, and always be a render not as good as yours, so why compete on THAT level. Why not be creative with lights, shadows, freebies, and have lots of fun doing it? That is what we are about here. I took a month off from the challenge after being up in here almost every day for 5 years. In that month of total withdrawal from here, I had a chance to think about what it really is all about. After peeking in a few times, I saw ShareCG and Rendo on every entry...tons of it....and some were even stealing links from entries posted before them so they wouldn't have to go look for stuff, just copy one from another entry...that is really sad! That made me think of just how uncreative the challenge has become. Yes, the renders we had back then may not have had all the instant morphs to go, and all the special one click shaders and lighting, but we had one thing that has gotten lost here...how proud we were of the characters we created with dials, and the manual light placement and settings we created, even the textures we made ourselves and gave to each other. All the entries were special in their own way.

I want to make it clear that we, by no means, are saying you can't get your freebies from SCG or Rendo, but just to try to expand your hunt to other interesting sites. I have found some really cool things on third party sites that were NOT on big community sites like SGC and Rendo. Just the opposite of what Kendall said, and I was able to share the links here for others to enjoy. THAT is part of the fun. They have this thing called "bookmarking" a site for future use if needed too. What if Magellon had just agreed that the world was flat and did not sail around it to prove it was not, and what if Columbus had not took off to look for India only to discover America? What would the world have been like then? Where would America be then? THAT IS THE CHALLENGE JEEPERZ IS TALKING ABOUT!

Ok...just keep it in mind when you "create" your entries. The judges will be considering it all when they pick their winning choices. Wanna be a winner...then you will have to work for it. Wanna not be a winner....then paint by number if you like.

    :-)
