Thank for replies!  RRRR news to me and could use some good news...

Been a very frustrating few weeks as an update nuked my entire products and content directories.  Open DS and nothing there!  Not even categories or file structure.  : 0 !  Had to uninstall/reinstall everything.

Was going to ask tech question, and found a pleasant surprise here!  Looks like I got lucky-- but first I heard of it!  (can you 'follow' a topic & get e-mail notifications?)

Also funny because out of my three RRRR entries, would never have thought that particular one would have placed.  Was botched because scene too large for my card.  Meanwhile the one I liked didn’t get any votes at all!  Never can tell I guess.

Anyway, thanks again for taking time to reply here.  Much appreciated.  Now that I’ve repaired DS, hopefully can get around to uploading some renders this weekend.  : )

    best wishes

@Tynkere - I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been there. Sometimes odd things just seem to happen that way.

    @Midget

Posted at your topic.  Making your own clothing sounds hard as hades, but probably well worth the effort.

    @Wanderer

Yes, no idea how updating would mess things up, but good news is everything is on “E” drive now, and that freed up about 6GB on"C" which is still almost full.

I never got past concept art for a $4,000 vet bill for our cat.  Here is concept art if anyone has ideas about landline phones and long cords.

"Percy" (based on Darius 7 obviously) is a character I've been drawing for years.  Surprised this one got any votes-- shows how much I know!  We're our own worst critics?

I figured if any RRRR entries had a chance, might be this one.  Don't think it got any votes at all!  Guess Beatles fans were not amused...

Finally, the one I thought was botched because this was all my puny 1070 could do. Guess it got the point across. : )

Thanks for reading and hope you enjoyed!

    Nice job on those!

Nothing worse than having to redo everything.  Ask me how I know.

    Uhm... Obviously a rhetorical question.  ; )

Anyway, got lucky with this one at New Users.  Learned quite a lot about the value of instancing.  Still so much to learn, but be my last one as bow out to let others have their turns with the CVs and experts who help us there.

Meanwhile 3DL glass looking pretty good, but Shadermixer...  Obviously I am missing something.

If I right click I can get Sven's 3rd panel to appear but no outputs...  Sphere or any of its categories doesn't seem to make a difference.  What am I missing?

    -----

DAZ had a medieval/fantasy sale, so picked up plenty of goodies including a hospitaller knight.

Suggestions on how to make his chainmail look a little more like metal?  Metalicity isn't one I've played with in IRAY.  Makes it look darker and too reflective.  The default is glossy plastic as shown here.

Also, opinions on his pose.  It's realistic based on a documentary I watched on how they really fought, but looks kind of static right?   The 'sword fighting' poses I saw that the store though were more Hollywood style.  According to the documentary (on Discovery channel I think) they bashed with the shield, stabbed opponents, and quickly moved on.  No time for theatrics.   OTOH theatrics might make for more interesting render, so suggestions welcome. : )

Hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading!

Lol you really don't want to know. I've redone my custom categories a time or two.  And only once on purpose.  I've gotten smarter and started to save them to an external drive.

Can't help on the materials, I tend to use premade shaders (in fact, I have a bit of an addiction lol).

As far as the pose goes, I think the shield is too close to his face.  If someone hits the shield its going to break his nose.  I tend to render the more theatrical poses, but I do fantasy so reality in my world is pretty quesionable lol.

Heh.  Didn’t think that having to re-do everything in runtime might not be pleasant memory.  Maybe a story best forgotten. ; )  Am trying to get organized too.  How people keep track of 1000s of resources beyond me.  Have to use the DIM sometimes and have a whopping 411 installed.

Good observation about his shield, and heck.  If magic and monsters in there, who cares about reality!

Anyway, thanks for reply. : )

Well, I had a hard drive go bad, and with it went my entire custome category system. (which, if I do say so myself, is a thing of beauty lol).  Keep in mind, I've not only categorized everything I've cross referenced a ton of stuff for kit bashing (so I would have an outfit in the clothes/outfit/ fantasy category and then each piece of that outfit would be also categorized under shoes, shirt, pants, jewelry weapons etc.  This happened about a year ago.  It took me almost 3 months to redo everything working on it about 4 hours a night every night.   At that point I had about 4000 in my library not counting freebies, or stuff from other stores.  I currently have over 7500 also not including freebies and other stores.   It was awful.  I cried lol.

I recently got a new laptop and did decide to redo my categories from scratch as I wanted to organize it a bit differently.  Also took several months, and I am just finishing it up now.  But, I am far better aquainted with where things are at this point and since it was voluntary, it changed the context quite a bit lol. I've not done the kitbashing side of things yet but the basic organization is just about done.  The good thing about categories is that once you put your stuff where it makes sense to you, you will never spend hours looking for something.  And (hopefully) you only have to do it once for each item.  I am far more productive because I know where my stuff is.

And I now back everything up.  Regularly lol.

As far as being realistic, hey, that's the fun of fantasy art, you don't have to be lol!

Kitbashing...  Hmmm.... So much to learn. Add that to my list.  : )

Hadn't even thought about whatever the term is.  User files?  HDD crash lose all that work?  No wonder you probably didn't want to talk about it!  Glad you did though.  Am going to back mine up after logging off. : 0 !  (Get lazy about those things.)  Thanks for sharing that though-- put the fear of computer crash gods in me.

Relatives are flying in for kind of mini-family reunion tomorrow.  Will leave with this one.

I haven’t updated this in a while, and have a question at the end. But first... ; )

Just some fun testing a city block set from Collective 3D I think.  Old Chap always reliable supporting cast.

    ---

People liked this one the best out of my four entries in the RRRR contest.  I’d have bet on a different one, so never can tell...

    ---

Now for the one that needs help.  Eye and teeth settings after Altern8 seemed to help with skin.  Portrait copied from an old high school yearbook I found from 1974.

Problem is eyes will have a white ring around iris, and she looks like she has allergies.  I did find a ‘recipe’ for teeth posted by a member named “Arnold C” back in June 2016.

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1277576/#Comment_1277576

“Arnold C” really seems to know his stuff & can cite the literature which is great for those who want to understand just what the heck some of these sliders do!

    Assuming teeth look OK...

1.) How do I brighten the sclera without going into Photoshop and messing with texture file itself?

2.) As mentioned, how do you get rid of weird white ring between iris and sclera?  Topics suggest putting iris behind sclera, but that's for G3?

Tips suggestions welcome.  Occurs to me that dForce, bone tool & things are nice, but if characters look goofy when I want to be serious...  Maybe back to the basics.

    Thanks for reading

Always enjoy your humor!  laugh  The RRRR brings out the best in some folks.

Although I am not very good with Daz Studio, I do know that there is a separate surfaces area for the sclera.  If you have your figure selected, go to the surfaces pane, then go to the editor tab, then go to the sclera.  For Genesis 8 figures, there may be an intervening choice of "surfaces" under the editor and above scelera.  You will then see the menu for adjusting the details of the surfaces settings for the sclera, which can be adjusted independently of the other surfaces without going to photoshop.  And now I have exceeded my knowledge of Daz Studio's Iray surfaces, except to point to some general informaiton about each option.

    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/interface/panes/surfaces/shaders/iray_uber_shader/shader_general_concepts/start

Hopefully, someone will come along soon and know the specific setting to adjust brightness.

    @Diomede

Thanks about RRRR and touching base.  Random render is fun because it’s no pressure and doesn’t feel like a contest if that makes any sense.  Given their experience, get the feeling I could get slaughtered if they really put their minds to it.  Amazing I even place sometimes.  Beginners luck.

Surfaces probably the hardest thing for me in DAZ.  General glossary of terms is helpful as reference.  Probably made a fool of myself with half-baked suggestions at your topic.  Thought that counts I guess, but what's the old saying,"Better to remain silent and appear ignorant than to speak and reove all doubt." : 0 !

    @Sven

Thanks for encouragement and also feedback on the teeth.  Been staring at this so long wasn’t sure if eyes too dull or teeth too bright.

Had a look at your renders at 3DL topic and woah! So Awe-Shader is out eh?  I had a look at the longer PDF file.  Sheesh!  One very deep rabbit hole, but looks like good documentation.  Just bought it, so I'll have that to play with too.  devil

Mention 3DL topic because not only did her skin in the second render look amazing, I had a look at the coloring of teeth & used it as a reference.

    So I made some adjustments.

Hopefully the newer version has more natural looking teeth with a little more texture to them.

Honest feedback though.  This will be a long term project so everyones comments welcome

    Thanks for reading

    --Bruce

EDIT: A nice CV pointed out that using G3 iris on G8 sclera leads to the white ring.  So can disregard eye problem for now.

Meantime, Awe-Shader is... That's going to be a project.  Hopefully have something to show for it after a while.  :)

Lol yeah finally=) And yes, very good documentation, and wowie is being extremely helpful and supportive (mustakettu too). Just ask in the commercial thread if you run into trouble;) I find that stuff extremely easy to work with (especially lighting), converting surfaces takes time but is surprisingly straight forward.

Got an Iray eye product, so now for the fun stuff.

I think it has become a mental block, or maybe glass is just a challenge in 3DL.  Good thing Wowie has presets, or I'd be hopelessly lost.

Wouldn't a hollow glass sphere like one of those antique balls used to hold up fishing nets bend the light?  Seems to reflect OK, as does mirror surface.  Darius isn't looking too good, but haven't messed with his mats.

Suggestions on the glass then?  I honestly don't know.  Wouldn't it cast a shadow too?  The table, mirror, toy, and Darius are, but where is shadow from the sphere?

Have to be very patient I guess, but on the bright side-- had forgotten how much I like the highlights & shadows in 3DL.  And that one render with the motion blur in it.  Wow!  yes

Something I’m messing around with right now.  Have to tweak water color & opacity before I do a ‘Gone Fishing’ scene using props by that name.

Suggestions on how to make wet looking skin surface for frog?  Many products at HW are still 3DL only.  Dual lobe settings in IRay just have skin looking oily or waxy-- not really wet if that makes any sense.

Color tweaks to "Fern Lake" water to get it more greenish as found in central & west Texas

    Refract Color: .12 | .22 | .16 (99-128-112)
    SSS Amount: .0010

Cutout opacity: 1 | (opaque looking water)
Cutout Opacity at .9990 | (clear looking water.  Can see gravel, fish, fish shadow, etc.)

As said, suggestions for frog skin and water opacity/color greatly appreciated.

Been messing around with making my own uneven terrain with Bryce.  In DS, also been playing with “Ultra-Scatter”

I think it defaults at 20 copies.  So 20 lichen covered rocks strewn randomly around the tree & looking good!

Now let’s get ambitious and add 200 instances of rye grass.  Oh dear...  I must’ve typed in 2000.   The uneven ground and rocks look great!  Shame no one see them! : 0 !

Yes, I’d wondered, what was taking so long.   Woah!  Bumper crop.  Too bad I can’t add zeros like that to green stuff like money.  The DAZ store would like that. ;)

    @Diomede_Carrara

Thanks.  I’m semi-retired and maybe just have the luxury of more spare time.

    Meanwhile...

Glass in 3DL.  Goal: solve glass puzzle and I’m free!  (I just can’t do very large renders compared to IRay; CPU thermal issues)

Error from aweshader... archive to post at that topic.  edit later

Files/DAZ 3D/DAZStudio4/shaders/omnifreaker/displacement/omDispStandard2.sdl’ uses a different interface version. Automatic conversion was successful. It should be recompiled for better performance.

Meanwhile also been messing around in Carrara for terrain.  Newyears resolution: use all those critters I got at HW!

    edit:

Thought struck me that if not much for gold to reflect in a white cube with one AoA spot, then Aweshader results might be inaccurate.

Made a simple scene with a plane, a cylinder and an awe PT area light:

Set the desired transmission color, set transmission shadow to 50- 100%, increase transmission absorbtion until you get the result you want:)

With regular 3DL, use the AoA SSS shader, it has a channel named shadow color, pretty straight forward. You could check the AoA metalized glass shader presets, look very nice IMO, those are based on the AoA SSS shader. https://www.daz3d.com/metalized-glass-shaders-for-daz-studio

That might finally be what I've been trying to do for... A year?  surprise

Now it looks like I just need to figure out exposure or light intensity in Aweshader.

Emitter plane in sample scene isn’t powerful enough to make shadows?

Maxed intensity to 8!  G2F overexposed, but two diff color shadows!  yes

    Intensity Scale Offset: -2

    'Use Temp' = on @ 6500 (kelvin?)

Set gamma to 2.2 render-side and on the emitter (this eliminates orange appearing yellow?)

    IRay & Fern Lake:

Member @Szark was kind enough to upload some water volume settings for it.  Those values seem insane at 5000 and 10k : 0 !

Does it look like pond water, or tap water with food color added?  Suggestions welcome.

Maybe some progress in both 3DL and Iray today.  That doesn't happen very often, I'm happy camper  smiley
