How Else Will I Grow - ItsCeo

ItsCeoItsCeo Posts: 471

My name is pronounced See-oh and I  need your help!  I am starting this thread to get feedback from YOU.  You see things I do not.  You know things that I do not.  How else will I grow if I do not ask for advice and criticism.  I have used contests in the past to spur me into making renders.  I did not necessarily think I would win things, it was a tool to give me goals and subject guidance.  I am going to try to use this forum thread instead.

The works I am most proud of in 2017 utilized interesting (to me) camera angles.

Rose "The Undertaker" Harrington... and...

Let Me Love You

I plan to use this thread as a chronicle of all my works.  So some will be pretty bad, hahaha.  I really would appreciate if you give me advice, pointers or what you would have done, and anything else.  I am not fragile, I am asking for criticism.

I began the year in January with "Birthday Portrait".  This was not done as a work of art, but to showcase which characters I chose when I purchased the Owen 8 bundle - Owen 8, Elijah 7, Scott 6, Gianni 6, Leo 7.

I lost my job in January and filled most of my last month with bad choices.  I am still looking for work, but am starting to create things again as a constructive and theraputic outlet.

Llola Lane’s RENDER A MONTH Challenge 2018 got me working again in DAZ (Thank you!! Llola) with
    Secret Circle

Then... I worked SO HARD on the next piece.  I was really proud of it... until the next day I looked at it and noticed the background was all pixel squares - ahhh!

    He Is Gone

Most recently is "Soon Mina, Soon".  I feel I should have just left it at just the tiger.  I hate the lady and weapon I put on top of him.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

I actually like the lady on the tiger.  You could lose the weapon, or maybe change it to something shorter she can swing over her head.  Right now with the way it is over his head its a bit distracting.

He Is Gone gives a great sense of emotion.  I don't mind the pixels but if you don't like them you can always use a program like Gimp  (free) or Photoshop (not free lol) and play a bit with it and either blur it, take it out and put something else in or overlay something on top of it.

Really like the contrast of the bright purple, metallic hand and body to the more organic eye in Secert Circle. The only thing I might tweak would be pulling back just a tiny bit so that the top of her head and her finger are all the way visible.

The Undertaker is very well done and the extreme angle works very well for this.

    Good to see you again!

I'm not good at names, but recognize the avatar I think.  You posted some comments at "NU" challenges in the past?

At least I know how to pronouce your name!  I had wondered, "Chief Executive Officer or something?"  : 0  !

Anyway, glad to see I'm not the only one just starting a topic.  I don't know how they post to "Gallery" -- don't have anything to put there anyway!

    ---
    To your topic though:

I like "He Is Gone" too.  That's some nice subtle light, and if I got that close in, the hair would probably give the game away.  Also like how you somehow avoided extreme highlights to eyes.  Read an interview with one of Disney's top VFX artists.  They asked her about eyes.  Her reply something along the lines of,

"People are very very good at recognizing other people.  Most of that is the eyes.  We just aren't there yet.  From a distance if people say, "great scene" we've done our job.  If they say, "Cool special effects!"  then we blew it."

Also like "Secret Circle" maybe for the same reasons.  Nice bright colors and maybe just a tiny highlight on the eye so it doesn't look flat.  smiley

I tried to do an evening lighting for this render of Riza.  Not sure I like it.  Sorta looks washed out to me, but was playing with lighting.  But hey - I didn't cut her head off this time - so I'm learning!  smiley

Great to see you here in the art forums!  Evening light isn't easy because it shifts from about 5000K for daylight to 3000k in the evening (even lower later) . And with that you might need to dial up the lumen to achive the same brightness than with a daylight.

I'd love to offer advice, but I'm learning, too. I like the undertaker a lot. Welcome and keep going!

I hate sports, so what did I do to Minto - put her on the front row!

Her upper face does not look real enough for me but I don't know what to do about that.  I prefer more photorealistic.

    Something Silly for Serene Night

I love the sky but hate the fake ground - looks like it's painted - not realistic enough for me - but did it on the fly.

Love both of your last two renders.  The Minto one looks very realistic, like a scene you might see on TV.  Adore the two cats!

Love the cat render!  Great idea!

You have wonderful camera angles on the first several posts, nicely done!

The cat render is touchingly original and endearing. Don't we wish everyone could get along as nicely? :)   You did ask for tips and suggestions, so one I would offer is to remember weight when posing. I haven't done the cat in awhile, but I believe there are bones in the ankles which can be bent? The back paws are on a downward curve of the larger cat's leg, so the paws would be more slanted, with the weight on the back heel because the surface slopes down and it is quite a sharp slope.

The Minto render, I love the energy in the scene, with Minto and the athletes in the background. Minto steals the show, as she should!

The lady and tiger render- the closeup of the tiger's face and going out of the render is very clever!

These are all fun renders. Ceo! Sorry to hear about your job loss. I was in the same boat last year. Art is good therapy! Don't be too hard on yourself, just relax, enjoy and play!

Thanks about the cat placement!  I didn't even see that!  When I look at it now I am kicking myself!  I was so focused on the cat front paw and big cat head placement that I was blind to the foundation.

I was working on something totally different when the hair gave me an idea - so I saved what I was doing and made this.
