  • Hello and welcome, I took a look at your image. The eyes are a striking color. However I did notice she has some hot roots. Like her hair dye hasn't been washed out. And they have some sort of trancelucency on the part. I think it is mainly the lighting causing this. Like the sheen on the cheeks.

I haven't decided on hair yet, I will probably change it, I also forgot to change the lighting, I just used an HDRI.

I got an idea for the eyes from this mini tutorial, from poster DAZ_cjoneshttps://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/817055/#Comment_817055

  • I mostly light the scene with an hdr. Often from hdrihaven, Caley interior is my favorite hdr there.
  • This one I have done some time ago

  • The eyes are a bit off, didn't notice that when I did the render lol

I think i will make it a universal shader for the regular Gen 8 skin. It is a bit difficult to tell people how to make some maps. But then you get an idea and work from there. I'll see if I can get around it this week or beginning of the week next week.

This looks really good, remcovanembden. I'd say you may need to increase the SSS of the skin...?

Thank you. The shader is based off digital Emily's. I think older skin handles the sss differently. I have to investigate that a bit more.

Neat! Any way you could share the shader?

Yes, if I can figure out how to set up everything accordingly I will send you the shader privately.

May I also have a copy please?  Im having a little trouble having the skin look good.

This character uses the same principle but different maps and also a bit different settings. As youIit is not easy. I think iray still lacks a lot of stuff for skin. Maybe a costum MDL shader is better.

When I was looking for suitable pictures to use in FaceGen Artist Pro for Elvis Presley (and any other celebrity for that matter), that's how there skin looks, like they have on heavy pancake makeup. You render is very good in that aspect of realism.

  • Let's get this started again. Made a few modifications to my shader. What do you think?

This shader is outstanding, can you share the details? If not, I understand, but I'd like to know just how you achieved it! Amazing work!

  • I am already updating the maps. And looks better now. It would be easier if she poses for me so I can take some skin photos hahaah. Maybe if we'd ask her, she would do it? Saw interviews with her and she is effervescent and fun.

I'm just a hobbyist who likes to make pictures so I really envy your skills. I too like to include older characters because, well, they have character. When you are looking for realism, I suggest that such character will catch the eye more so than a plain, smooth Barbie. Unfortunately, I do't have your skills for creating your own skins or sculpting your own bodies and faces so I have to rely on morph packs and commercial skins. That said, it gives me hours of fun even though I'm not starting from a blob of clay, as it were.

This is a slightly modified version of Frida and with no effort at portrait lighting - just a quick scene with only HDRi. Some of my other characters have more extensive morphing but I like Frida.

  • It is not hard, but it takes just time. Especially sculpting the normal maps. Takes me between 8 to 15 hours.
  • And yes, older skin is also harder to replicate. I really like that Daz create also elderly.

To me, this awesome community is all about sharing tips to get the best renders possible. I'd love to share. Do you have Ultimate Iray Skin Manager? I could upload the file that way. If not, I can post screenshots of my surfaces.

They are based on the excellent "Chromatic Skin Shader Guide" by isidorekeeghan with my own tweaks.

P.S. This is Olympia 7 skin on a G8 body.

Thanks for the offer, but no, I don't have the program, but can you give me a link to his guide as it's impossible to find it with the broken search function here as even in quotes I come up with your post only, and google is no help either, thanks in advance!

    Thanks a lot!

  • I updated the face maps, and also added a deep sss map. Now the hair falls out of place i think lol, not a problem, it is only  a test render.

WAIT, yes I do have map manager, but not manager pro, so I'd love to snag your settings!

This is great! The eyes especially. Would love to see your shader set up. How did you make / implement a "deep" sss map?

  • Normally skin consists out of 7 thin layers. In 3D we usually replicate the first 3 namely, dermis(diffuse), epidermal and subdermal. However in our iray version, they have merged the epidermal and subdermal, we got the dual lobe. I combined the epidermal with the subdermal map. Subdermal is a deep blood map, which is kinda red, hence the name blood map. Epidermal is a more yellow and less fire red map. This map is for the subcutaneous fat under the skin. I made those maps and combined them in photoshop. There is not really a standard setting for these skin maps. A lot depends on the diffuse skin. Veins sound be on the blood maps and actually not on the surface maps(diffuse albedo) there are exceptions for very shallow veins. The blood map regulates the blood flow and the red color in the skin/diffuse map. The flatter the diffuse map the better. Pores and wrinkles should not come from the diffuse map but from the underlying normal, bump or displacement map. All this together plus good scatter and specular maps should make skin look better. I have seen some vendors use this concept too.
  • Regarding the eyes. I changed the eyeballs a lot. First the cornea bulge is important. If you use the one that comes with daz's morph package, you should set it to 210. This is a far more correct bulge shape. I also changed the pupil to be a hole and put an extra mesh behind it to mimic the fluid behind the pupil and iris. I then set the pupil to a gray color. The eye maps are important too. I use for everything 8k normal maps. And bpr textures.
  • I also found a cheat for the eyes. I concave the eyes and bake that into the normal map. This gives me a better result. I still use concave and convex morphs.
  • I made several test renders, all with the same HDRI just different rotations.

Personally i like the hair best( read in the other thread that the hair looked okay). To me the hair is perfect, it looks kinda half wet, like when hair dries on the beach but is not fully dry yet and looks a bit clumpy still.

  • Thanks for the info, Rem. Lots to digest.

    takezo_3001, here are the settings.

You will almost certainly have to mess with the translucency color. Mine was set at:

Good image. A couple suggestions. I would add some shine to the skin, like there is some sunscreen on her skin. See if I can roughen up the hair. Beach hair is rarily this neat.

  • I was working today with a skin texture I made (I call it Lynnora) and with CakeOne's IBL. I liked the test render and decided to show it.
