Those UltraTrees look great!  I'm excited about that product, so that we can have "hero" trees in the foreground that really look legit up closer.  Like @Nath mentioned, I will hope for this to be joined by add-ons later of other tree species, like some pines as are common around me here in northeast florida, for one.

I just beta tested the TAFI Avatar system. It's pretty standard avatar dressing room & UI. Nothing to get too excited about but it is nicely done and in a stylish low-poly game friendly way. The Avatars are pleasantly low poly and configurable for a reasonable but small selection of shapes, colors, hair, tatoos, makeup, costumes, and wardrobes.

Several bugs in rendering in the viewport but not in the actual models. Running the Windows Universal App causes my laptop fan to go into crazed overdrive and it shouldn't really. The TAFI Avatar App was created using Unity.

Once you get a avatar that's what you want you upload it to their servers to save. The intended use is to use in multiplayer networked games but as I don't do that I can't test that portion. Perhaps in the future.

As a beta they say we can keep the items we used to create or avatar's look free, even if they have a cost later after the beta. That means all, well about 99%, of the beta content you downloaded to beta test will revert to costing you money to buy if you want to use it after the beta. I guess having a lot of looks is big in some gaming communities but I'm likely to stick to using the same look avatar I created before the beta period ends.

It would be nice if there was a pipeline between TAFI Avatar System & DAZ Studio so one could create avatars in DAZ Studio and export / import them to TAFI. However, that was probably nixed because the logistics of verifying whether the content TAFI is importing from DAZ has a Interactive license is pretty much a non-starter. For all the content I've got that does have interactive licenses in my run time I've yet to use them in any game engine for publishing so I don't know if DAZ 3D has people or content spiders looking for illegal use of their DAZ Store content. I have used Poser content and Unity Asset Store content in a published game. I imagine, practically speaking, DAZ 3D only checks highly successful games for DAZ content and who knows how they broach the game publishers of those highly successful games as to whether or not they've purchased interactive licenses for the DAZ Content they've used.

After watching a video and masking something in Photoshop, I was quickly convinced that my long forgotten Topaz Labs ReMask would be worth taking a look at. Then I remembered the Mask Al was $20 off the introductory sale price if you own the ReMask. So that's what I'm investing in this morning, I'm DONE with difficult masking. Too many steps in Photoshop and that Quick Selection Tool is only so-so.  I really liked ReMask (I talked about it in these threads) so just wanted to give other owners the heads up about the discount on the Mask Al. Check to see if you got an email or if it went in your spam folder.  TopazLabs site has really good examples of the Mask Al.

So curious- what do you folks use for masking of difficult subjects such as wispy hair, thin stems, complicated architecture?

Doesn't your old Remask still work? I've been pretty disappointed in the other Topaz AI products I have. I think I'll skip the Remask AI offer, unless you come back with miraculous results.

  • @Nath Thanks!

When it's a render, I use Daz Studio to create black and white "mask" images. Draagonstorm put out a great product for creating masks in 3Delight. Unfortunately, it doesn't work so well in Iray. However, there is a work around for Iray that is a lot better than nothing.

With the Mask and Multipass Toolbox, you could select objects that were hidden by other objects and the mask would be for just the visible areas. I haven't figured out a way to be that specific, but I can get perfect masks for things like "wispy hair" and "thin stems".

    1. Hide everything except the object(s) you need a mask for. If you need a separate mask for two objects that overlap, you should do them separately. But if you have multiple objects you'll need a mask for that don't overlap, you can do those in one pass.
    2. In the Render Settings > Environment:
      • Set Draw Dome to Off.
      • Set Environment Intensity to 0.00.
    3. Optionally, in the Environment Pane(Tab)
      • Set Type to Backdrop.
      • Set Background color to white, (255, 255, 255,) if necessary.
      • Set Visible in Render to On, if necessary.
    4. Render for 10 to 100 samples, maybe a bit more, depending on how complex the edges. (Wispy hair will need more than an object with smooth sides, like a car, for example.)
    5. Save your render as either a PNG or a TIF.

If you leave the background transparent, you can Ctrl+Click, (in Photoshop,) to create a mask. If you use TIF, there is an alpha channel saved with the file, (I've been told. Haven't actually tried that myself.) However,  in Photoshop, you can actually paste the image into the mask layer if it's active. (Alt+Click on the mask in the layers pane.) Pasting a black and white render into the mask will hide the subject and make the background visible. Assuming you want to hide the background instead, while still in the mask layer, use Ctrl+I to invert the mask. Exit the mask, (Alt+Click on the mask in the layers pane again,) and you will now see your subject is isolated. I prefer this method for those little details that can get lost using Photoshop tools to create masks.

If you do two separate masks for two overlapping objects, You'll need to subtract the mask of the front object from that of the rear object. One way to do that is to layer the two images with mask image to subtract on top. Invert the top image so that the background is black and the object is white. Use the Lighten blend mode. Flatten the image and use the modified image as the basis for your mask.

Actually I have not a lot of interest in post working a render (yet) so hardly any experience in masking but a good PS Essentials masking product that could create masks of UVs to 'autocreate' new Surfaces groups or weighmap groups would be nice. Also as a mask with a modified dFormer tool that used the created mask to "dForm" instead of that clumsy & inaccurate sphere that is used now by the dFormer Tool.

    @nonesuch00

    • Select the dFormer field.
    • Go to the Parameters Pane(Tab).
    • Locate and select Influence in the left column.
    • In the right column, click on the drop-down and select Weight Map.
    • Activate the Node Weight Brush Tool, (Alt+Shift+W)
    • Open the Tool Settings Pane(Tab)
    • Look for "Unused Maps" and click on the Add Map button the the right.
    • Right-Click in the Viewport.
    • Locate and select Select All.
    • Right-Click in the Viewport again.
    • Locate and select Fill Selected.
    • In the popup dialog, set the value to 0% and Accept.
    • Right-Click in the Viewport again.
    • Locate and select Clear Selection.

Now you can use all the options available for the weight map brush to modify the map and cause the dFormer to affect only the areas you want affected.

Unfortunately, I know of no way to create such maps in an outside program for pasting into the map. Not to say it's impossible, but I haven't figure out how, if it is.

Weight maps aren't maps in the texture/image sense - they are a kind of vertex map (as are morphs, and indded the actual UV mapping) where a list of values (weights, offsets, coordinates) "maps to" (is the same length and order as) a list of vertices.

OK, thanks. It would be nice though to be able to paint a weight map and have only the dFormer effect those vertices according to the weight strength painted on those vertices.

Isn't that what the Influence Weights map already does? See L'Adair's post above mine.

    You're welcome.

Since I learned how to use Weight Maps with the dFormers, I use them in nearly every scene. I'll frequently spawn those into morphs, or I end up with dFormer entries all over the scene tab!

BTW I made my weight loss/ maintain the weight goal for my 63rd birthday (today) and have now done that for months- ahead of time. I wanted to weigh 124 or less and I've been able to do that by walking.  I'm at 6.7 miles for today (been walking and on the glider while doing the renders so I'm close to the computer) and so I'm headed off to get in 10 miles for today. I'm going to look up the glider and tell you which one it is, because you'd LOVE it and it's very reasonable (compared to what I thought it would be. I was expecting around $375 to $400)

(Edit- It's at Walmart and called Gazelle Supreme Glider, right now it's $239 and $60 off. Worth every penny and really well made. I use the heck out of mine and have had it since November.)

@Novica  I was reading through past posts and came across this.  I was wondering if you could tell me how well this folds up?  Ive read reviews where people said it was bulky to fold.  Looking for other options because my treadmill killed over and honestly tried to kill me a few times!  (When the belt slips those things are dangerous!!)

I LOVE this glider, it's heavy duty but that means it's got thicker elements, aka the apparatus is wide. Think of pvc pipes (for lack of better example) and instead of a typical 1" tubing, you'd have about 3" tubing. So I don't ever fold this up and I can tell you it would indeed be bulky. The reason I don't fold it up however, is I hop on it multiple times a day. By leaving it down and as a centerpiece in the room, I hop on and off it every day without any effort. I know if I folded it up, I honestly wouldn't be using it much as it is a heavier piece of equipment. I was quite surprised by the pricing, it's extremely well made. We have two of them actually, my sons got one for their location.

I did just fold it up, and it's easy to do btw. I just pushed on the back piece (think of a long rectangle base going vertically on the floor,  A top and C bottom, with B and D sides, I pushed on C)  and it took very little effort. It is bulky though because the pieces are thick to accomodate weight and wear and tear. If you're looking for a small piece of equipment, this isn't it. If you want something you'll WANT to climb onto and see results, this is it. It glides smoothly, watching tv you honestly WILL NOT remember you're gliding after you start using it a week or so.  Walking outside, ugh, I know I'm doing it LOL. .

I strap my iPhone to the handlebars using ponytail holders so my walking out in the backyard accumulates with the glider. I use my phone when I walk to record the data. The glider is considered non-impact (on your knees and hip) and walking is considered impact, so you're actually better off combining the two according to my sports surgeon and the physical therapist. Makes sense.  I've had treadmills all my life and will never get another one after this. And yes, this glider also has a setting to increase the resistance. (Too much for me personally. ) However, no incline so in that respect you'd have to go treadmill with that option.

By 10am this morning I had done 5 miles, watching a marathon of Hawaii Five O with Roku/ CBS Access. Mahalo!

No, I kept them. I got some in a bundle I purchased last Christmas time, and one or two I got free for having purchased the previous non-AI version of the tool. They keep updating them, but I see more bugs introduced than bugs squashed.

Would love to see how it works. A bit frustrated that I've bought everything that they have at a certain point a few years back. Then they add more. Bought them. Studio versions... etc. Now they're coming out with "AI" versions of everything. Would like to know if it's actually worth the money or just a gimmick to keep people buying and paying for their stuff even after supposedly buying everything with free updates forever... Until they changed how they are presented.

If you are looking for reasonable priced Christmas gifts I was given an 8 Quart InstaPot (combo Electric Pressure Cooker / Slow Cooker) in December 2011 and have used it about every other day for almost 8 years now.

I have seen air fryers but had never heard of an air fryer as an attachment to an InstantPot. I will have to get one as I've been afraid since childhood of deep frying in oil.

Once, as a kid, I was actually frying doughnuts as I had done many times before. We were poor so I had made do in a pot of oil I had actually heated on the stove top burner to fry the doughnuts and the oil got so hot it caught on fire! I can't imagine the dangers of poor people back in the days before mass manufacture of items designed for personal safety. Well, great, an oil fire and I'm completely clueless as how to safely put it out. So I very slowly lifted the pot by the handle and very slowly walked to the (only) front outside door to our apartment. The whole time I was hoping that no one came into the room while I was carrying a pot of burning oil. Finally, made it to the front door and oh so slowly opened it and the draft sent the flames on the oil back into my face and panicked I somehow miraculously dropped the pot of burning oil and punted the pot like a football. Sonia, my friend's mom that lived in the apartment across from us said she saw an explosion at our apartment and there was for real. It was all the oil being spattered just so perfectly that it all instantly burnt up in a huge explosion as big as our door and disappeared just as fast! Not a trace of oil or even fire anywhere. Funny and lucky thing was no one was near where I kicked the pot into the air at and so no one was hurt, not even me. I did go to search for the pot I kicked afterwards and found it about 15' 20' from the door with a big dent in it where I had kicked it so hard trying to get it away from me. Even the pot was perfectly keep of oil or burn marks. Except for the dent I put in it it looked new. LOL, I guess the doughnuts vaporized! Oh, I was so lucky!

I believe that I already own every Topaz product, including all legacy plugins, with the exception of this new one. I'm caught in that bug that Topaz currently has, where it shows I have no upgrades, but when I put the Mask AI in my cart it discounts to ~$50. Their website isn't working so well right now. I sincerely wish they had a place that clearly showed what products they offered and which of those you owned already, on one nicely efficient screen.

Anyway, I wish I knew if Mask AI was worth the difference from ReMask.  Has anyone tried it  yet?

@firewarden https://topazlabs.com/my-account/upgrade/ shows that I am eligible for a free upgrade to Sharpen AI. I got some other ones free, too, for owning previoius non-AI versions.

Yes, it usually does all that automatically. And I believe I own every single product sold by them through the past several years, and  I keep up with the upgrades. Their website is bugged atm. I got an email saying I get a upgrade at a discount, but the website says I don't have one. And they have the note saying if your account says you don't have an upgrade due to the website error/bug, add it to your cart, because you'll still get the discounted price.  I cannot open my shopping cart on Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Silk. Rather frustrating.

And I do wish they had a list comparing what they sell with what I own. While I believe it is 100% with the exception of the new Mask AI, I'd like a place where I can check it easily. I may see, once their website is working correctly, if I can suggest that they do something like that or find out if I'm missing something obvious.

I tried it and did screenshots to show you- then when I tried to save it, poof. Nothing. Photoshop closed down and it wasn't saved. I'll try again, but meanwhile, I'll post the screenshots in the next hour. You can decide if you like it. I found it very easy to use but I don't think I was trying everything it had to offer.

Haven't had dinner yet (10:45pm) so going to go eat.

Topaz Mask AI is getting bashed by users in the Topaz Forum.
