If you have two seperate parts to your model and you want to join them together, you need to select both complete pieces, then right click and select Combine objects. (From memory - hope that's the correct wording)
Novica,
Make sure you are using object selection (F key) and then select both items in the scene editor or in the view port and use Merge (Ctrl+M) and they will become one.
Okay, that works. But I have to get the vertices to the vertices (matched up) because I have huge gaps and irregularities in form. So I'll get it cleaned up and try it. Thanks Wilmap and Mattymanx.
One question though- there is not a way to merge vertices together from different objects, like an anchor to hold it in place while you mess with the rest of the vertices? (getting them better aligned)
Combine the object first and then merge.
Thanks Frank, I will try that.
Adding A Single Vertex
Combining Objects
Adding a vertex:
Select the edge. Hit X. When you go to vertex selector, your new vertex will show up.
Combining Objects:
Create>Combine Objects
Have you figured out the keyboard shortcuts yet. I'm not sure what they are on default cause I have custom set up. Shortcuts save a ton of time. Rt clicking also saves a ton of time
Hi Frank :)
I am adding the keyboard shortcuts to the beginning posts, as I find/use them.
One thing I am not finding is the Combine option. I've googled, gone through forums- everyone says combine, or combine and merge, but merge is different than combine isn't it? (As per a few posts here, "combine THEN merge...")
I've been doing a LOT of yardwork so not been on Silo for the past few days.
One question newbies will have- (because I do!) is that if I've used a sphere, at it's top and bottom, there are going to be triangles. Will those be okay? I've used a sphere for the giraffe's rump, which is what I am aligning with the torso.
Yes you will have tris at the top. No it doesn't effect anything for some reason. Combine Object doesn't have a default shortcut set up but you can add one for it. It is listed in the Keyboard Settings. Just click on it and assign whatever you want
What I'm saying is I can't find it :)
Edit: After two hours, I found it.
Select both objects using Shift, RIGHT CLICK in viewport, and Combine Objects will be in dropdown. It is not combining though.
Using combine just turns it into 1 object. If you want them to be merged then you need to merge them after you combine them. Another useful tool is bridge. Select 2 faces and select bridge and it will add new geometry to combine them. In the example I made 2 squares and combined them into 1 object. select 2 faces and right click and select Bridge and it adds in the geometry to connect the 2 pieces.
Thanks- I knew about Bridge (it's in the book, with diagrams, but it's good for others to know what it is-thanks so much for the diagrams!!) and what I am doing is Combine, then selecting two vertices using Shift, then Merge.
One question I do have- because I've never thought about it- are the meshes hollow? I have half the giraffe, and if I do Mirror Geometry when I'm done, the inside of the giraffe won't be there. Is that correct?
yes its hollow. Its not a solid
Thank you Frank. :)
You other new users or artists interested in Silo- are there any questions you want to ask the experienced users? What kinds of things are you experimenting with/ making?
The other question I have is regarding the uniformity of the mesh- I don't have exactly uniform face loops- some sections are split more than others. Will that make a difference after smoothing? I read that when first building the mesh, it's better not to subdivide too much and to get the basic shape going. So I had to make some sections (such as the hump of the neck) smaller squares (polygons) while keeping the body (the side of the giraffe) bigger. Is that the right way to start out? (I know, NOW'S a great time to ask that- but I have to putz to learn.)
I finally managed to create a vase in Silo following Ann's tutorial, so thought I would post it here. I didn't uvmap it yet, just applied a AoA shader from Metalized Glass. The lights are AoA advanced ambient and spot.
It was great learning following the tutorial, and learned throught trial and error how the different tools can work. I know it's not perfect but it's my very first, it can only get better from here on in...lol :)
Edit: added a closeup of the vase
Kharma- that is absolutely STUNNING!!!!!!! Way to go!
Edge Tool
Okay, what exactly do you do with that? For those of you who haven't tried it,
Create>Edge Tool. Then you click and puts green dots (vertices) but be sure and connect them.
Then you can use Area selector (the dotted box) and select Edges Manipulator > Extrude and pull out your edges.
By holding down CTRL (freeform Tweak) and using the red rotation, you can straighten up the edges. They come in quite slanted and flat otherwise. I did the outline of a horse's head pretty quickly that way- but what exactly are you supposed to use the tool for?
Silo has been crashing on me frequently- and the past four times when I have tried to save, it crashes. Not very impressed. No other programs are running to drain the resources either.
TIP: If Silo crashes on you repeatedly doing "SAVE" then try "SAVE AS" and just keep the same name. Just did a test and five out of five times it crashed using SAVE but four out of four times right after that, it did fine with "Save As."
Stupid, but it worked.
EDIT: Now it's not working. Just crashed twice.
thanks Novica, it's just simple but fun to actually create something :) the more I play in silo the easier to remember the quick keys, and what the different tools do, but one I wasn't figuring out was the tweak to move the points around. Now I know ctrl + LMB thank you :)
I found when I first started to use Silo that it would crash if I tried to do things too quickly or pressed to many buttons. Now though I hardly ever have any crashes.
Nope, it's not that. I tested that, only did ONE cut/create vertex, and it wouldn't save. Crashed. Tried Shift +X to do the cutting, it did, then when saved, it crashed. I rebooted and had a little better luck, but is still periodically crashing with only one thing done. It's not the speed of the actions, it's the simple "Save." (And not done quickly right after the action either.)
I've read many places on the forums about the crash problem, was hoping I wouldn't experience it. Darn it.
Only time it crashes on me is if I'm in point mode and doing quick adjustment having several selected. I learnd to save just before doing anything in point mode
Hey, no one ever answered my question about point modeling- when doing append polygon on top of a drawing (the side of the giraffe) how would someone proceed from there? Extrude?
Just so you guys know there is a new update to silo 2.3 Pro.
Where did you see that. I can't find anything about it.
I had read on the forums that guy was working on some fixes, but I can't find a link either, nor can Google when I type in the update. Are you referring to the one that is "in progress" that will be done by the end of June?
Yep, my Silo just automatically updated through Steam to version 2.3 Pro. Not tried it out yet as I'm using Blender at the moment.
