You're welcome nobody1954- I haven't figured out a way around an obstacle and am dabbling (which will help me more than just getting a quick answer) so once I get more fine tuned and have a clue, I'll post more. And always glad for anyone to post what they are doing or struggling with.
I got those tutorials and haven't viewed them yet.
I have practically all of Fugazi's tutorials and The Digital Tailor series taught me all about making clothes and how to use Silo.
I can't recommend him enough. He is so easy to watch and learn from, even his mistakes, which he leaves in and shows you how to sort them out.
One problem. Most of the tutorials are directed toward Poser. What is a good system for exporting/importing Genesis 2 figures/clothing? Having issues with getting the scale right.
I export the figures from Daz as Poser size and import them into Silo without changing anything in the settings. Once I've modelled the clothing I export the clothing item - again without changing any settings and then import into Daz at Poser size.
Some people use Daz size, but I followed Fugazi's tutorials and that was the way he did it.
I exported from DS or Poser. I've done both. I then model to that figure ratio. I also have an app that I can scale up or down by a % and then just reverse it after your done. I find it much easier to use the already scaled figure from Poser or DS
Thank you, folks. Now to see what can be done.
IIRC the first time I tried exporting G2F I used DS ratios and when I imported into Silo she was huge, so I went back and tried Poser ratios and she was tiny in Silo so then I just had to zoom in and the size seemed ok. Right now I am working through Fugazi's party dress tutorial running into some issues with the skirt layers to make the folds. Sometimes the under mesh goes right through the top layer when I am moving them.
Yeah if you save it out of DS you can select Poser scale. It is pretty small in the UI but is plenty big enough to get detailed work. Only time it can be a pain is when your using the Displacement tool
Edit: called it the wrong thing at first
I need some help with my project please. I am half way through the partydress tutorial and saved my file as a.sib I saved both the dress and G2, is this the proper way to save a partial project? Now when I reloaded my file to continue working it is very sluggish and the page fades out and it takes several seconds for each mouse click to respond and Silo keeps giving me a not responding in the top bar while I wait for an action to happen. what is the proper procedure to save a project?
The only time that happens to me is if the file is a very large one.
What size is your file?
I just use "Save As" when I start my project and then keep saving over that.
I did the Party Dress tutorial, and though I saved it incrementally together with V4, I didn't experience any kind of sluggishness from Silo each time I opened the latest save to continue.
Kudos to Mattymanx for putting together a nice list of references for Silo. :)

Just a heads up. Silo for Windows 64 bit is in beta testing, to be released soon, perhaps this week.
Digging up this older thread because Silo is on sale for only $37 on Steam!

It's very intuitive and easy to use!
Took me 11 months to start, but I am just beginning to work on a first project in Silo :) I am already stuck. So much for just guessing how the basics work, lol. Off to watch the tutorials.
@3doutlaw If you get stuck on something in particular, just ask. I haven't gotten back to Silo (got Zbrush, but haven't used that in awhile either.) but there are quite a few vendors who use Silo. I think mattymanx does? I bought some books and they're quite good (I like printed pages to have in front of me) but I don't know if there are changes / new versions since I've had those.
There have been a number of changes to Silo recently. The current version of Silo is 2.5. There is a moderately active forum at CGtalk. http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=175&utm_source=Silo&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=SiloNevercenter Some very helpful people there. Many are old hands at the software.
Thanks! One problem I could not figure out: I used a lasso select to select a group objects, and then grabbed the manipulator to move the group, but it just moved one of the group. Any idea how I can move the whole group?
I put in a feature request at CGSociety for Font Size...it is very small!
Nobody here since last year? I need help.
I got the newest version and it's driving me crazy! Simply following Fugazi's The Chest, first video. Creating the cube and using Extrude. I follow exactly, but...when I hit Extrude and move the mouse to the Move Modifier...the movement of the mouse starts extruding as I move it. I can't figure out how to stop this from happening. Also, value put into the Scale: All field changes the shape of the cube, it doesn't draw in from the edges as it does in his video. I never had trouble with this part before, just since I got the new version. What is going on? It seems like such a simple thing.
Help!!!
Dana
Thanks for this thread Novica! I just tried my hand again at Silo and it was helpful to get me started again (some things are just not intuitively obvious).
I should probably get back to it. I do have zbrush but it's complicated. I remember liking Silo and one of these days will putz around with it.
Never mind...
Dana
I saw in the dFroce thread they mentioned the button layouts page, which is great, I never noticed that!
That being said, is that just moving/putting buttons in locations, or can you make a new button? I come from Hex and I loved the viewport navigation buttons. It may be slower, but then again, so am I, and I always seems to screw up the ALT button mouse clicks...
I wrote up a 12-page PDF showing how to create a conforming and dForced shirt in Silo 2.5. You can find it here.
A question: most programs allow you to add to a selection by holding down the shift key. Silo indicates the same but does not work on my installation. Does anyone know if there's a setting that turns that on/off?
EDit: never mind. I got it to work by opening the mouse settings and resetting to default. Now it's working.
I'm late to this thread; just starting to pick up and READ the book Novica references in her first post - "3D Modeling In Silo (The Official Guide.) I agree it's a great book to get one started with the program!
Only rub is that the listed URL for downloading the book resources (referenced images, extra material, etc) is no longer valid. Novica suggested I try to contact the author, but that was easier said than done. I next contacted the Nevercenter support team and was thrilled when they found and sent me a corrected URL - https://routledgetextbooks.com/textbooks/_author/ward-9780240814810/resources.php. They also sent me a link to Anthony Ward's website - he's one of the authors - and that is http://www.antcgi.com/writing/3d-modeling-in-silo/. That website is somewhat outdated (has the outdated book resource URL!) but displays some of his other work. He has a couple of non-Silo courses over at Pluralsight and Cubebrush.
Thank you SO MUCH to Novica for starting this thread and to all who contributed!!!
Ray
Thank you for the updated link to the resources, HeavyRay! I, too, have the book, but never did do the tutorials and so hadn't downloaded the material. Your efforts are appreciated.
Ray, thanks for posting the information. I put a link on the first page to your post. :) Happy Silo-ing! (I really need to get back to it. I'll have to start from scratch though, I don't remember how to do anything! That's why I start threads LOL.)
