    Wow, some great looking renders already. Very high variaty of options chosen.
    I'll just mention two that I was really impressed about:
    Tim Batemans smoking ice cube
    and mtnmen's comet. Only, for the comet, you might want to make the tail a little less dense, more like 'cold fume with some chunks'? I think might make it even better.

    I haven't even started on this challenge yet, but I'm sure to have some ideas towards the end!

    Beautiful renders from you all here again :-)

    So I show my first entry here:

    Fire and Ice.

    The ice at the poles melts , water flutes over the country and carries icebergs with it...

    @hansmar... Thank you for the comment as well and I agree with you that the comet tail does need some "softening" .. with debris....

    I think that I have to consider this entry as a WIP... so I can work on the tail's texture...

    Love the tortoise in the image. One of the best things about my job is I get to rescue tortoises and move them to a safe location before a site gets developed. They call me the "Turtle Whisperer" at work! ;)

    Great entries so far and it looks to be another difficult one for the judges. Hoping to participate, but don't know if I can swing this one.

    But I'm pulling that particular image... because I have reworked it a bit and I think it's a much better render than the first attempt.

    So... This is my 1st entry...
    Title: Comet Escaping the Sun's Gravity
    Now I have to go back and see what all has been created in this challenge.

    Rules question. Can I use my render as a Christmas card to family and friends (none of whom are judges I assume, and who could be instructed to not post it anywhere) prior to judging, or must it remain hidden from all, not just the judges?

    MntMen thats a fine idea and image - esp to celebrate the achievements of the Rosetta mission!
    TimBateman' Shrooms are very interesting - would like to know the effect these might have on someone if they're eaten. Look dangerous bu maybe thats a decoy for their delicious nature.

    Quite a challenging theme this, but already a good range of concepts on the plate - hope I can come up with something...

    Having some time to spare this evening, I idley Googled fire & ice images, which came up with predominantly blue& orange spectral scenes a bit like David's in feel. Must be some kind of deep embedded meem in human minds for this theme!

    The term fire & ice brings to my own mind the island of Kamchatka, where a friend once went to help survey the vast bear population (lucky chap).
    This Russian website has a stunning virtual tour panarama of some of the island's main volcanoes, which is worth a look - a bit like using one of Horo's QTVR images:

    I had thought of doing a Kamchatka - like scene in Bryce for this competition before I saw this virtual panorama - but its so perfect that I can no longer bring myself to do what would be but a poor simile.

    After a brief detour to investigate Yngwie Malmsteen's Fire & Ice rock album on You-tube (cute album cover), somehow I cam across this site which has amazing and unexpected images of fire& ice in Chicago: These should appeal to 3D-modellers too!

    This is all awesome work (and I too love Tim Bateman's smoking ice cubes), and educational as well. I might sit this one out because I'm still engaged in working on that Queen Anne house -- doing interiors now. And I feel totally outclassed... :down:

    I finally got the opportunity to look at all the great entries so far in this, again, varied challenge...

    @Timbateman... love Cold Inferno... Brrrr....Ouch! & thos shrooms are as psychedelic as some shrooms I've known in the past..
    @TheSavage64... Great Chile Ice.... Ai Ai Ai...
    @mermaid010... Blazing Ice.... Great flames... and that is one cold heart... reminds me of a Hall & Oates song
    @yellow pen... Great volcano!...and oh, so misty...
    @Hawk_Shango... Great image.... odd, but I really like odd.

    Thanks Gussnemo, Horo, Mermaid, Keryna... and hey Keryna... that Chicago fire and ice was amazing...
    Okay everybody... keep this good stuff coming... It's so exciting.
