This is the final render of "Winter Cold is Coming" poster. Size is 1033x800 (14 inches X 11 inches) pixels as suggested. This is the raw Carrara render that is required and I will post the post-worked version as well. I will also post this poster being used in a not so pretty urban setting to show it in perspective.

The post work involves some gamma correction, a light blue color filter, a high-pass overlay and a vibrance overlay.

Great WIPs here, everyone and very topical - we are getting the news bulletins down here of the heavy snowfalls - we should be in a blistering hot Summer, but are getting icy gale-force winds straight off the Antarctic. Must be all this global warming.

Hey, stringtheory9 - I'm seriously impressed by the modelling, subject, render - everything is just perfect and as photorealistic as it gets:)

Thanks Roygee, that's an awesome compliment. Although I gotta say, I was looking at some of the other WIPs on in this thread just last night and thinking I'm going to have to up my game! :-)

Well I think I have something in mind now.

I found a scene for the Chickenman.

I have been working on replacing the default shaders with fur shaders using the hair room part of the modeling room.
see attached. I think it is coming along much better. you can see the white fur shader it came with still around the edges of the clock and I have replaced it on the sleeves.

Not a bad start. :) It's up to you, but I'd up the number of hairs to 100,000 or more. Carrara should be able to handle it fine. That will give it a more 'thick fur' look. You might also want to have a look at your hair shader. I'd suggest you make the root darker than your tip. If you have white for a tip color, you might move toward a more grayish color for the root. Experiment to see what's best. You could also play with the Length, Frizz and Kink values in the hair shader.

Very interested to see how it all turns out.

Well, I'm calling this one done. I fiddled with the decorations a bit making the two bells slightly different sizes. I added the candy cane with the shader using DCG's Enhance:C. It turned out pretty well.

The first render is the raw Carrara render.

The second render is with postwork. I took it into Paintshop Pro and added a few highlights and shadows. I also added a bit of red to her cheeks and nose. I then moved over to Onone software's Perfect Effects to add various filters and effects. I ended up going back into Paintshop to add a blur layer to give the image a softer look.

I still haven't come up with a title for the thing yet.

For whatever reason, the postworked render keeps coming in on top. So, the top render is the postworked render and the bottom render is the raw Carrara render. Isn't technology great. :)

Some impressive WIPs, well done everyone :-)

I'm still flat out with NaNoWriMo and will be till the end of the month, so I won't even get started until 1 Dec. But I do have an idea...

There's some really nice things going on here.

Here's a test of a different idea that I'm working on.

I need to add icicles hanging off the rocks, as well as more snow in the foreground and snow drifts. I also want to find a nicer camera angle and add some kind of atmosphere. I haven't decided if I want to make the river frozen or partially frozen.

I'll get into the shaders a bit later as the scene develops and what I did to model the the various elements.

Here's one last small size test render and my final scene setup before I change the size and quality settings and let it run.

I adjusted most of the textures, added a level of smoothing to the lorez characters closest to the the camera, changed the poses, added a few last details and aimed a couple low intensity cameras set to negative into the scene from the left (the water and characters were getting some mysterious light scatter from that side that shouldn't have been there). I also lowered the density on the volumetric cloud and moved it down and a little to the left. Lastly I took out one of the snow planes and replaced it with a 10x10x10 replicator of grey sphere primitives to make snow right in front of the camera.

I saved the irradiance map on this render and I'll use that on my final render, which will hopefully speed up calculations a little - sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. :)

The composition and details are very nice so far. Are you using ambient light? If you are, you may wish to reduce it or turn it off. The colors and shadows seem a bit flat.

Here's a different camera angle. I also re-aimed the sunlight. I was buys watching the Badgers' game, so I didn't do much of anything with the scene except the shader work to change my grass into snow. The more I look at it, the more I think I will make the river partially frozen. I still need to come up with some icicles hanging from the rock outcrops.

First of all, I am sorry for my multi-day absence - the doctors are still trying to figure out what's wrong with my back. I still cannot spend much time at the computer. I've been checking the thread progress on my phone, but the forum gets weird formatting there, so it's hard to read and completely impossible to type anything longer than 2 lines. :( The images looked good even on the small screen, though, and I've been getting duly impressed by your WIPs! :)

Thank you all, for keeping this thread running with such amazing new work! I am completely amazed and awed.

EP, That's very cool geometry for the river banks. And I love the fallen tree - such a beautiful detail to add realism to the scene. I also like the icy river and icicles idea. The icicle shader can be a fun thing to create. The snow on the branches seems to be different from the snow on the ground. Is it based on a reference too? It's an interesting effect. Almost seems like one is snow (on the ground) and the other is half-ice. When I first browsed the pages I missed, I thought that your frost WIPs were for this river and rocks scene, so now I am very curious to know what's it was really for. I hope we get to see it :) I'm sorry about your weather trouble. I hope it gets better. I grew up and still live where snow is very rare, and therefore is associated with winter fun, and a reason to celebrate in itself, not a disaster (although the municipal services would most surely disagree with me...). Also, thank you for updating the index thread!

Mark Great improvements to the scene! The kids playing is a nice touch. The falling snow looks great! And so does the fog. Will you be rendering separate passes for this?

pimpy I absolutely love that scene! It's fun, whimsical and absolutely gorgeous. The only improvement I could possibly suggest would be to add some bluish translucency to your snowpeople's snow shader (the ones in the foreground only - we hardly see the replicated ones, so we probably won't notice it there), and the snow they stand one - the shadows are a bit too dark and warm for the sunny outdoor scene with blue sky and snow objects. If you told me that I would have such an intense emotional response to an image about nothing but snow-persons, I'd never believe it, but it really is amazing how much emotion is packed into this scene. I also love the composition and how the orange of the star is connecting with the red of the scarf to guide our attention through the whole image. That scarf and earmuffs are also insanely cute! :)

Tim_A, I am glad you are planning to join the fun! I was hoping you would :). Best of luck with your writing!

David, I wouldn't be surprised to see your postworked image as an actual wall-sized poster somewhere around the holidays. Some huge department store promotion, maybe. Great glamour effects! Love the decorations shaders. The reddened chicks are a great detail to give her that wintery look of someone who is having fun in the snow and cold air. The fur was perfect to begin with, yet you managed to make it look even better in the final image! Since you are done with this entry so quickly, will there be another entry from you? ;)

Chickenman Your Chickenman looks great in the furry robe. I am intrigues about the scene and can't wait to see more of your WIPs.

stringtheory9, I completely agree with Roygee! The shading and modelling of the clothes and accessories and your entire scene look stunning! That jacket looks amazing. I'd love to know more about your modelling and texturing workflow for it.

Stezza Those are great looking animals. I am getting more and more excited to see your completed scene with all these wonderful elements together!

DarwinsMishap Your postworked image is gorgeous! You've managed to get the crisp cold sunny winter day air feeling embedded in the image. It looks and feels so real, it made me actually shiver when I looked at it. Wow!

Dartanbeck, do you plan to participate with your own images? As I was looking back through previous challenges, I found your explosive entries, and realized how much I missed your images recently.

    Hi Antara,

the snow on the ground is purely procedural terrain shaders. I want to augment it with modeled snow drifts/piles to better match the trees, but I need a base to start.

    Thank you!

The first thing I do in any scene is turn ambient to 0 and I know I did it here because some of my earlier renders were not so flat. But I saw your question and figured I'd check just to eliminate every variable (always start with "Is it plugged in?" ;) ) and my ambient had somehow reset itself back to 20! I even checked one of my earlier incremental saves and it was 0 there. So strange!

Now I'm going to have to re-adjust all my lights because I think I've been turning them down trying to compensate for the ambient I thought was already turned off.

This vintage promises to be exceptional, very goog work everybody !
It is certainly the magic of the winter which revives the creativity…
Here an evolution of my project.
I worked over the costume again and created some more elements in the scene.
The terrain was also re-worked, I modified a part with the displacement painting tool around the tent (lavùù, in Lappish language).
I have difficulty with the lighting to recreate as well as possible the atmosphere of this moment of the day, I will still test other adjustments.

That is weird. I've had functions turn on or off seemingly without me having to do anything as well.

In my case, it's the extra time that winter provides because it is cold and I want to avoid being outside longer than necessary. Although you would never know it from the last couple weeks. ;-) I actually do better warm weather pictures because that is what I desire.

I'm happy with the spring summer and fall. Winter is a necessary evil, in that it kills bugs and gives the earth a chance to rest, snow replenishes water, etc. It can be beautiful and I can even have some fun with it, but I don't love it.

Here's some more work on mine. I added a covering of ice with a texture I started with the 3D paint function and finished in Photoshop.

    Antara,
I'm really sorry to hear that you are having back problems. I hope that they figure it out and you find relief soon!

Thanks you! The jacket in the close up image is the Daz product "Adventure Jacket". I was using it as a stand in (it has a nice clean UV map) while I tried different textures to see what they would look like in place. I'm still trying to figure out the whole UV mapping thing to apply the texture to the jacket I modeled. I'm using photoshop to piece together bits and pieces I've pulled from the web. The modeling is all done in the Carrara modeling room. Besides adding walls to existing models the goggles are the first actual object that i've modeled. I used the curvey line tool to create the shape of the lens and then duplicated that and extruded the frame (pretty much the only two tools I know how to use at this point). Same process for the skis.

The jacket I'm working on started as a sheet with a hole in it which I draped over M4 and then bent and tweaked with the soft selection tool. The sleeves started life as polygon rings with I extruded and then pushed and pulled into shape. I'm sure there are better ways of going about it but right now I'm just fumbling my way through. lol

Sorry to hear about your back pain. That can't be fun. Hopefully, you and your doctor can figure that out.

Thanks for the kind words. The fur came out very nice even though I didn't properly map the objects I used as bases. Worked anyway. :)
I still haven't thought of a good title for this one.

And no, no second image from me. Don't tempt me. The last two Challenges have been like shiny objects, distractions. Very enjoyable distractions. :) But, I do have projects I need to finish, and the Thanksgiving holiday will be the prefect time to set my nose to the grindstone. (Ouch!)

I wasn't totally happy with the hair texture on the head of the woman so I thought I'd add a little bit of Carrara hair at a low hair count just to look like random fly-away hairs. This is my first time using Carrara's hair... why did no one tell me how much fun it is? I just spent 40 minutes cutting and brushing hair around. :)

    Hi Antara,
I’m really sorry that you have back problems (in 2000 I had great problem too to my back and I can understand you!). I'm sure that you will solve it in a little time and ...Think positive ... I heard about the terrible weather you have in USA and staying at home is sure better!

Thanks a lot for your comments and advice. I tried to do a new render using also EP's advices about irradiance map and this is the new one. I'm sure that this render is better...
    Take care of you
