I wasn't totally happy with the hair texture on the head of the woman so I thought I'd add a little bit of Carrara hair at a low hair count just to look like random fly-away hairs. This is my first time using Carrara's hair... why did no one tell me how much fun it is? I just spent 40 minutes cutting and brushing hair around. :)
I love it for still images. Not so much for animations!
I played with the color on the lights a little, added a background gradient to get little color in the sky and added some lens flare to the streetlights. Also - I learned something interesting: don't do a depth pass with a volumetric cloud covering three-quarters of your scene because it will all show up as one single depth. :( I had to hide the cloud and re-render just the depth pass. Fortunately on the second render all I needed was the depth pass so I could turn off all the lights and it rendered like lightning. :)
Postwork: de-saturated the whole image slightly, fixed some lighting issues caused by my textures, fixed a little bit of poke-through on the woman's hair, used the depth pass to add some lens blur, darkened the edges and added signature.
Here is the final render and the post-worked version.
Very nice job on that scene. Love the little hidden details, such as the signage. I think it was a great idea to add a color gradient to the sky.
BTW, just for folks that may not be aware of it, anything you use in the scene's Background (not Backdrop) will be treated as an Image Based Light (IBL) similar to an hdri if the skylight is enabled in the Render Room. The Realistic Sky under Atmosphere is also treated as an IBL, but did you know that you can use both the Backdrop and the Realistic Sky together?
I tried an experiment to get snow on my rock outcrops aside from what I could get from the procedural terrain shaders.
I built the rock outcrops as vertex objects, so what I did was to select polygons in the flatish areas where I wanted deep snow, and copied and then pasted. This created a separate polymesh. The displacement painting that I had done on the outcrop was eliminated from the pasted polymesh, which was good for my purposes. I then used soft select to manipulate the mesh to bulge it up or push it in to hide the edges.
I also selected the entire separate polymesh and created a new shading domain for it so I could add a snow texture.
So here's a couple test renders of the added snow.
Next up, icicles. The challenge with the icicles is that these aren't like what hangs off the eaves of your roof in the winter. Many times there are small gullies that channel melt water to specific points and it looks like a frozen waterfall. Usually there are also small springs that can provide enough water to make an ice fall. What I need to do is find some logical or nearly logical places for that to occur and balance it with my final framing of the image. Not to mention, I need to be able to effectively model them. I think this is where modeling in the Assembly Room will come in very handy!
After some positioning and texturing I have done a draft render..
made some tinsel, a melted snowman a washing powder box with flakes which still need texturing.. also used emoji fella with a textured plane to represent the sun...
The koala is causing me grief with posing and need to fix that...
Struggling on during the northern winter heat.. only 31c today.. a lot cooler than what the weekend was like.. which peaked at 45c in some places!
I switched to the "3) Final Trim: 45.875”h X 89.875”w" size option to reclaim some lake view. I'm also playing around with tree placement. I need to re contour the foreground snow on the lower left so I can plant some trees around the lake shore.
Modeling and texturing on the jacket is finally complete! I've got to give the poor guys some glove though. Next I need to work on some ski trails in the snow behind him and then deal with that snow spay which I've been putting off.

I switched to the "3) Final Trim: 45.875”h X 89.875”w" size option to reclaim some lake view. I'm also playing around with tree placement. I need to re contour the foreground snow on the lower left so I can plant some trees around the lake shore.
Modeling and texturing on the jacket is finally complete! I've got to give the poor guys some glove though. Next I need to work on some ski trails in the snow behind him and then deal with that snow spay which I've been putting off.

Looking this picture " brrr" I feel cold! I like the atmosphere of the full scene and of course fhe ligths on the trees. very good!
@stringtheory9 - as I posted previously, this is really great work:)
I would consider some change to the placement of the trees - the upper body detail tends to fade into the trees.
Perhaps some change in lighting to make the figure stand out from the background? Possibly if you put the snow back on the trees, this would serve the same purpose?

I think I have to do something to get the lady to be more prominent.
What about some kind of impractical armour.. %-P

My 2 cents worth......
Transition - as snow normally falls, instead of fog maybe snow falling down over the snow scene including that section
(maybe 2 metres/6 feet) just in front of the snow that the polar bears are standing on.
For the lady maybe an ice-blue color, not so that it stands out like a sore thumb, but just enough color to get that difference.
Alternatively she could be projecting an ice-blue aurora/halo around her, she could also be projecting out an ice-blue energy bolt from her raised hand "Out of the way Autumn - Winter is here and I'm coming through".
Have included a DAZ render I did a while ago to give you some ideas about an ice-blue tinge.

I like your thinking... I made a stubby holder but getting the platypus in an ideal pose is hard... had to just get him relaxing in the esky :-)

Here an evolution of my project.
I worked over the costume again and created some more elements in the scene.
The terrain was also re-worked, I modified a part with the displacement painting tool around the tent (lavùù, in Lappish language).
I have difficulty with the lighting to recreate as well as possible the atmosphere of this moment of the day, I will still test other adjustments.
I am very impressed with the improvements and especially with the snow terrain you have created. The way it has different areas and different levels of being trampled on - wonderful! The scene is coming together beautifully. And I like the latest version of the lighting.
A possible thing to tweak a bit is the right arm pose of the figure. It could be just me, since nobody else said anything, but I have difficulty reading his gesture. I know he is pointing, but his arm is at a weird bend and I can't quite figure out why.
Q. in the hair room, wath is the " Convert" button beside the "drape button " ?
After you drape the hair, the guides will remain as they were (or they should). The button converts the guide hairs to the relaxed/draped shape, so that the hair can be modified through the guides after it was draped.

That is one amazing unusual landscape. It's amazing how much colder it looks with the ice on the river (Great ice shader, by the way!) I think the added snow geometry works very well, adding more realism, especially where it partially covers up dried up plants and on the river ice. usually snowy images look like fun and games to me, but you've managed to show the dangerous side of winter. Somehow that landscape is both beautiful, but very unwelcoming. So I agree with David - it makes me shiver too.
Good luck with the icicles! It sounds like a fun challenge for a long evening indoors :)

Thanks you! The jacket in the close up image is the Daz product "Adventure Jacket". I was using it as a stand in (it has a nice clean UV map) while I tried different textures to see what they would look like in place. I'm still trying to figure out the whole UV mapping thing to apply the texture to the jacket I modeled. I'm using photoshop to piece together bits and pieces I've pulled from the web. The modeling is all done in the Carrara modeling room. Besides adding walls to existing models the goggles are the first actual object that i've modeled. I used the curvey line tool to create the shape of the lens and then duplicated that and extruded the frame (pretty much the only two tools I know how to use at this point). Same process for the skis.
The jacket I'm working on started as a sheet with a hole in it which I draped over M4 and then bent and tweaked with the soft selection tool. The sleeves started life as polygon rings with I extruded and then pushed and pulled into shape. I'm sure there are better ways of going about it but right now I'm just fumbling my way through. lol

Those are neat creative ways to model things! That jacket method would never have occurred to me. :) :wow: And you are getting very impressive results with it. The goggles look professional,nicely detailed and very cool. See, if you hadn't told us that it's your first modeled object, I would have thought you have an extensive modelling background, and started using Carrara for the convenience of having many elements besides modelling available conveniently in one place.
You also ended up with interesting hair there! :) Which you then made to look really great in your next image - they add such great sense of speed and dynamic to the pose!

Wow. :wow: That jacket looks great! Lovely texture Easter egg! :) And yes, the guy does need hands protection . If you don't have ready-made gloves, and don't feel like modelling them, maybe just changing the texture (or messing with the shading domains on M4) will give you the desired effect - we don't see too much of them anyway.
I really like the new aspect ratio and the the extra space for him to ski down. The wider left-side space with the steep slope give the sense that it's a fun way down, yet a very long one yet. The trees behind the figure also work very well compositionally - both drawing our attention there and through their vertical lines visually accelerating the movement.
About the glowing snow powder: Can you render your image with the multi-passes?
because if you can, you will get 2 separate layers for the fire primitive: Volumetric Add and Volumetric Multiply. You can then play with the settings on those layers to control how much they contribute to the final image (for example, reducing the opacity of the "Add" layer can lessen the glow effect.)
Sorry to hear about your back pain. That can't be fun. Hopefully, you and your doctor can figure that out.

Welcome to the secret society of those in the know about the hair room! Whenever I do things like hair and fur, I have to set up alarms so I remember to eat or get up occasionally. (No wonder my back is out of whack....) I get really carried away with it. Sometimes having fun, other times getting frustrated out of my wits because there is that one hair that won't bend properly no matter how many guides you plant right on top of it... >:-( look at my eye twitching... :lol:

Love all the animals in there! This image is so much fun already. Such delicious hilarious details. The platypus looks like he's enjoying himself the most. :-) Poor snowman... :( That sun looks really angry.

Also in this tighter crop I feel an instant emotional connection with the figures in the foreground. It's as if we are standing with them on that ledge, sharing that experience. I am completely awed by the huge difference such seemingly simple change has made to this image. :wow:

That's a brilliant idea for the image and stunningly beautiful execution already! I also love your idea about adding cold windy clouds or fog.
I would agree with Bunyip02 about adding breath fog to the bears and making the Queen's skin a less gray - more blue shade. The sled metal could be more reflective, I think, same with metal parts on the harnesses.
If you narrow your eyes and look at the winter side of the image, the thing that stands out the most right now is the white snow, the bear fur and the white top of the Queen's hair. I think whitening her coat might make her figure pop more or adding a white vertical through a whiter dress/sled: something to make her connect more to the snow and the bears, and less to the more gentle trees in the background. I think that will give her a stronger presence and a better sense of forward motion.
I think the fall forest looks perfect! the only suggestion I might make is about the grass - is it a texture or does it have some geometry? you might want to add some geometry grass and fallen leaves, and that will give you a chance to shade some in fall colors and where there is the winter edge - add the differently frost-shaded grass/leaves to further enhance the sense of moving barrier.
But the image already works very well, and these are all pretty minor adjustments. I'm loving it already and look forward to the next stages.

Hoping to finish up my current works by the 10th December, if I'm not suffering from "Render burnout" am hoping to get an entry in.
Will hopefully allow a couple of weeks to get my entry in - already have an idea/concept for it.
In the meantime I will keep lurking when-ever I can, and add a few ideas when I am able to.
Latest version of Stezza's esky with the Platypus gave me a well needed chuckle.
Also reminded me of the time I was lucky enough to watch a Platypus in the wild splashing around a waterhole for about half an hour.
Still need to finish off last competition's entry as well !!!!!!!

(maybe 2 metres/6 feet) just in front of the snow that the polar bears are standing on.
For the lady maybe an ice-blue color, not so that it stands out like a sore thumb, but just enough color to get that difference.
Alternatively she could be projecting an ice-blue aurora/halo around her, she could also be projecting out an ice-blue energy bolt from her raised hand "Out of the way Autumn - Winter is here and I'm coming through".
Have included a DAZ render I did a while ago to give you some ideas about an ice-blue tinge.

I like your thinking... I made a stubby holder but getting the platypus in an ideal pose is hard... had to just get him relaxing in the esky :-)

Esky is an Australian term for "portable cooler".
The word "Esky" is in fact a brand name produced by the company Nylex. The term originates from the word "eskimo" for its cold connotations.
Its popularity has become so great during the years that the brand-name has now been used to describe all types of portable coolers whether made by the Esky Brand or not.
You always take the esky on a picnic or to the cricket... ;-)

some droplets & splashes.. a railway track, a visit NYC sign a cactus and the obligatory black stump.. as this render is beyond the black stump!

Love all the animals in there! This image is so much fun already. Such delicious hilarious details. The platypus looks like he's enjoying himself the most. :-) Poor snowman... :( That sun looks really angry.
And, wow on your weather woes! Those temperatures sound like a natural disaster figures, not a weather report. :( Keep cool! (and render on!) :red: sorry, couldn't resist.

Also in this tighter crop I feel an instant emotional connection with the figures in the foreground. It's as if we are standing with them on that ledge, sharing that experience. I am completely awed by the huge difference such seemingly simple change has made to this image. :wow:

And thank you for the kind comments and wishes. I mostly feel fine these days on painkillers, but if I spend too much time sitting, it gets worse. So 99% of my computer times goes to my day job... and then I find out I have 3 pages of posts to catch up on here... :)
There is still some chains to create, and a summer-bear to fur up.
I am also considering to put in some fog or cold windy clouds.

That's a brilliant idea for the image and stunningly beautiful execution already! I also love your idea about adding cold windy clouds or fog.
I would agree with Bunyip02 about adding breath fog to the bears and making the Queen's skin a less gray - more blue shade. The sled metal could be more reflective, I think, same with metal parts on the harnesses.
If you narrow your eyes and look at the winter side of the image, the thing that stands out the most right now is the white snow, the bear fur and the white top of the Queen's hair. I think whitening her coat might make her figure pop more or adding a white vertical through a whiter dress/sled: something to make her connect more to the snow and the bears, and less to the more gentle trees in the background. I think that will give her a stronger presence and a better sense of forward motion.
I think the fall forest looks perfect! the only suggestion I might make is about the grass - is it a texture or does it have some geometry? you might want to add some geometry grass and fallen leaves, and that will give you a chance to shade some in fall colors and where there is the winter edge - add the differently frost-shaded grass/leaves to further enhance the sense of moving barrier.
But the image already works very well, and these are all pretty minor adjustments. I'm loving it already and look forward to the next stages.

Hoping to finish up my current works by the 10th December, if I'm not suffering from "Render burnout" am hoping to get an entry in.
Will hopefully allow a couple of weeks to get my entry in - already have an idea/concept for it.
In the meantime I will keep lurking when-ever I can, and add a few ideas when I am able to.
Latest version of Stezza's esky with the Platypus gave me a well needed chuckle.
Also reminded me of the time I was lucky enough to watch a Platypus in the wild splashing around a waterhole for about half an hour.
Still need to finish off last competition's entry as well !!!!!!!

I'm very glad you're feeling better!
I thank you for the valuable advice and comments and to answer your question I used a gamma correction to 2.2 for the final rendering and a light post production in Gimp by altering the level of blue
