    I like the promo picture with the lightrays through the cathedral windows. Did this work with coloured windows too (stained glass) and have the rays then different colors?

    You got it- so cool to see! I can almost smell the musty air. I also thought that Cisca Sanctorum would be perfect as the rows of columns really show the depth, especially when the camera placement has them all stacked. 

     

    I'm finding AtmoCam a great product and easy to use.

    Like Connatic I thought Cisca Sanctorum would be a good set to use it on, an atmospheric setting and it comes with an Iray scene seup. And once I tried my first render it was obvious which boatman should be seen down there:

    Hi RCTSpanky- I wasn't able to figure this out at the time I did the promo. I wanted the effect to be dramatic so I think I just reduced the glass opacity to 0%. I know how to create that effect with 3Delight and it's apparently pretty easy with Reality but with Iray it's going to take a little more tinkering.

    Okay, thanks to your tips Marshian I'm getting closer with this one, originally there was an impressive aura glow as well thanks to your Rim Light Rig with reworked photometric lights for iRay, unfortunately had to dispense with that though as once I added the atmocam the lights from the rig just flooded the scene which I should have realised would happen and set the atmo first!! Still, it's coming along okay but I may have to go back to the drawing board with the background.

    Ha WOW- creepy! I Love it. I'm so happy with the Rim Light Rig- one of my products I use the most. I understand it would have blown out your scene here.

    If you get inspired.... reducing the light on the front of the figure and turning the eyes into light emitters would have some interesting results.

    I did originally have it set up like that but the eyes went peculiar, although it's just occurred to me that if I reduce the translucency on the eyelids it should fix the issue I was having.....definitely inspired!

    My first render (well...first keeper) with the new atmocam.  Love the atmospheric effects!

    I liked what others have done with the Cista Sanctorum, so I thought I would give it a try.

    dHandle- Thanks for posting! I like this composition and mood, using the rule of thirds. One thing I noticed with your render I really like is how there is a small glow above the spotlights from the mist thats in the room. Nice light on the dragon too- I can see it moving so slowly, the head gently rising and falling.

    Thanks for your comments, Marshian.  I know it needs work; I was just trying to put together something quick to see if I could use the atmocam product, and get it to do anything similar to what I was seeing in your promos and some of the other renders in this thread.  This took several hours overnight to render out.

    So far..so good!  I added ripples around a couple of the columns in post, and a small wake around the dragon to give the impression of movement, but I think it's too small/subtle.  I need to redo it in landscape format so the main subject is a bit larger and more prominent.  Also, the eyes are dead. Need to apply some glossiness.  Would be cool to see a hint of reflections of those lights in the eyes.

    Anyway...I had fun playing around with it.  One more technique to master...

    This is a great product!  Thanks for developing it!

    Ok..so I made a few changes, and I think it looks a bit better.

    It's a smaller file, but it still took over 3 hours to render out.  I didn't like the noise I was seeing at about 75%, so I changed the progressive settings - Render quality - from 1 to 5, then to 10, (it dropped back to about 14% completed) then back to 5 (21% completed) , then finally settled on 2 (50% completed) .  Even at 2, it maxed out at 15000 samples!  I'm so glad I didn't have to start over after about an hour in because I didn't like the way it was shaping up.

    Now..what do I want to tackle next...?

    The readme says "To achieve the sharpest rays reduce shadow softness to 0." But I thought shadow softness was a 3Delight setting that didn't apply to Iray. Am I misinterpreting what shadow softness setting you are talking about?

    I wondered about that as well, I had a look through the settings and wasn't sure what this may be referring to in the iRay settings, the rays I have achieved for the scenes I required them in seem fine without this mystery setting adjustment, it's a very effective and exceptional product!

    As much a tech demo as anything else, but I'm actually really happy with how this came out. I'm looking forward to doing more serious work with these. Thanks for making them!

    (And yeah, I know it's grainy -- like I said, this was mostly a tech demo. I wanted to see how multiple light sources would work with the AtmoCam with caustics and architectural turned on. This is so, so not tuned for a final render.)

    That is looking excellent Demiurgent, your final renders must look amazing! My latest AtmoCam render is currently sitting at:

    Iray: 0.25% of image converged

    Iray Iteration: 1629

    Iray :Render target canvas was written.

    Just hit the 3hr mark.... I am getting a bit more adventurous with scene creation though both setting up and experimenting with different shaders so even with GPU acceleration some of my scenes are starting to take a while.

    I'm very interested in buying this product but this is what puts me off. I'd like to know what settings could be used to reduce this happening and some examples. Also, what's the render hit when using this product? Are we talking twice as long to render the same scene without the atmocam or even longer? There are a number of ways to create fog, mist and rays so if atmocam speeds this up then, once the graininess issue is resolved, I might take the plunge.

    My experience with all fog-like technology is that it can increase rendering time a LOT.

     

    For what it's worth, the performance hit in Iray is much less than equivalent stuff I used in 3Delight.

    Sorry folks! Again my notifications have been turned off and I was not receiving updates to this thread. Please send a PM if a couple days go by and you haven't heard back from me here. barbult- you are right shadow softness has been disabled, I'll get the readme updated. The default settings for the included light creates clean sharp rays. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    Demiurgent - Thank you! Very cool effect! I actually like the grain. It gives the volume more substance - looks like deep sea particles- you know baby krill and other tiny creatures.

    Hi Superdog- The renders do take longer but exactly how much longer I'm not sure. Here is a thread about reducing grain in iray: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/58034/. The other atmospehre/fog/rays products I have are used with 3Delight so it's hard to compare this product with those. One of the quikest routes that you can take within DS/3Delight is a product Sickleyield and I created here: http://www.daz3d.com/expanded-godrays-celestial-bodies.

    Hope this helps you make a decision! Let me know if you have more questions. Since AtmoCam was released I have already learned so much more about Iray. The really great thing is- this product still holds up to what I know now, I still use it all the time.

    "Oh, the Grain!" Can you hear Dr. Smith from Lost In Space?

    I've attached three renders that have been cooked up using a tasty recipe to both reduce grain and speed up renders. One of the main ingredients was Sickleyields post on DeviantArt Iray-Faster-Renders-Trick​ which basically about doubling the render size and then reducing it down 50% to the size you need.

    Here's the recipe used for the three renders attached:

    Pixel Dimension 2,600 x 1463 (which is twice my final usage at 1,300 x 732)

    Render Settings changed from default:

    • Max Samples- 2500 (half of the default)
    • Max Time- 3600 (half of the default) - Thats right, these renders only took 1 hour!
    • Architectural Sampler- On
    • I used the preset included: AtmoCam HDR Environment. Other than the light in the arch and the submarine spotlight it is the only lighting used.

    Color Presets used (all are at default density):

    • Snow- Default
    • Sand- Sepia
    • Ocean- Azure Sea

    In photoshop I reduced the size 50%, no other postwork was done. This seems to kind of compress all the grain (pixels) into tiny specs, blurring them together a bit.

    I chose environments that have more grain in them anyway- sandstorm, snow, ocean and I chose props that have lots of texture. The sand prop is from my UltruMarine Ocean set and for the snow I just removed the Diffuse Map. — Hope these ideas help answer some questions and get your renders back up to speed while using AtmoCam for Iray. These settings should be a good starting point for doing larger renders where you want them a bit more smooth and have more time to render. My goal is to provide stellar customer service which includes continued support long after my products are released so come back here any time with your questions or feedback.

    Oh forgot to get this when it was on sale.  I really want to get it as soon as I can.  I somehow missed it. I am doing more iray renders now so this can be useful.

    Okay I've recently purchased the Atmo Cam and set up a scene, I loaded the atmo cam, the enviroment hdr and light I chose the colour and fog density started the Iray render, there was no colour or fog, all I got was a render with just the photometric light lighting my scene! Either I'm loading it wrong or I've got something missing.

    Can someone throw some light on what I'm doing wrong.
