Getting on the 9 train, or not

  • I was hoping for a step change improvement when G9 was introduced. As to whether I think that has occurred: I have bought two G9 characters since G9 was introduced, that's fewer than the number of V3 characters I have bought in that same time. I still feel that G9 is better for portraits than G8, but worse for full body views than G8. And I rarely do portraits. My biggest feeling when I use the two G9 characters I have is disappointment. Disappointment that the elbows, hips and knee bends seem worse than G8 and disappointment that all the skin 'improvements' are largely invisible at the sizes I render, it basically boils down to disappointment over an opportunity missed. Shame. Regards, Richard.

I had a similar response about "full body" proportions until I learned how to "show hidden" parameters in the Parameters tab. Screenshots show you how! smiley Hope it helps you love your new characters!

...I noticed the "starter" freebies on the freebie page. and it's actually nice they did that. Sort of like an updated version of the "starter bundle" I mentioned. though without all the "Mil.Critters" Included.  I do agree that when they released the G9 base they offered more options with an expanded Starter Essentials as well as offering the Essentials Expansion i nthe store. both of which ass far options than previous generations had.

However for what I do I would still need to purchase all the various merchant shaping, morph, and skin resource content as well as plugins and those characters with certain desirable features for my "gene pool " (as I call it) that I use for designing unique "one of a kind" characters, along with the plugins and other rsoruces I use that assist with ransferring older genration shapes and moorphs (which unfortunately are not available, and may ever be).

Modelling, UV mapping , rigging, and sculpting are definitely not my "strong suits".  Hence I have to rely on existing resource content. and plugins (some of  which allow me to cross-mix different generations).  That is aht makes up the major part of the investment I have in this, and with which I developed my workflow over the years.   I really don't feel like starting all over from square one any more as I've already done so with each new generation that came along. I also had to deal with recovering from a fatal drive crash that not only took years of wokr with it but also sapped my creative "muse" for a while.

This is why I made the decision to get off a while back .  Not calling it quits by any means but need to stop and settle down for a bit.  Besides that leaves an empty seat for for someone else.who wants to see where hte train goes next.

the way DAZ has been releasing things, it would not surprise me to see a G9.5 or 10 soon enough, which will probably lower the pricing on the 9 items ... maybe/ I've actually gotten partly on the train now with buying a few 9 characters. I like the hair created for 9 quite a bit, and there has been some clothing not the same as every other generation. I'm still not sure I like G9 though. I'm still not sure why the opposite gender shapes were introduced recently. that doesn;t make sense to me.

And really on the economic thing? Because ( I don't know if this was just a holiday thing or not) but I found G9 items cheaper than most G8 items. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Most of the G8 stuff I like has been full price, no sale and more expensive than the "new release" price of the new G9 stuff I got.

It has been the holiday thing. All the stuff coming out for G9 at introductory 30% off I've noticed have been roughly 2-6 dollars more than what items were releasing at during G8's run for the same kind of items. The tokens and the past two big sales have had some great discounts that have brought G9 stuff down to where it kind of would have been and that's what's making it seem like they're cheaper. And yeah, you might be looking in the wrong place because if you stack some of the discounts on stuff for G8 in the sale section, you can get stuff pretty cheap.

Genesis 9 male is a disappointment for me. The figure shape is pretty undefined, and traces of female presenting breasts, as well as oddly long necks, and the absence of details in most purchased figures in the chest region makes it tough to get a comparative figure to G8M.

I do think the heads are really good, but really hard to get really cut, and detailed male figures that I prefer and the normals and HD seem very undetailed in most characters I buy for the guys. I'm used to better HD on Genesis 8.

Have you bought & tried the Victor for Victoria 9 and the Michelle for Michael 9? Maybe those help?

Regarding conversion of G9 clothes to G8/G8.1. Does anyone have experience with this and if it works well?

The new stuff for 9 beginning. You getting on the 9 train or sticking with older stuff?
G9 is a very different character than prior, but the way things are being released, as far as morphs, etc, it seems too lacking at the moment to be useful. My opinion, although I have ecked out a couple of characters using avaialble morphs.

I'm very undeciuded  if I'm getting aboard this time, at least so soon. I think G9 has some possibilities and nice new features, but, as a hobyist, the cost to value isn't friendly to me, especially with inflation as it is. I don;t like the combines figure mesh deal either. I guess it possible to create female, for instance, and save that so you odn;t have to conintuously recreate this, which will ease the need for sliding over and over.

The train is leaving the station, and there are sure to be many new cars attached. Are you riding along?

I was very reluctant to upgrade to Genesis 9 for the same reasons.

After almost a year since the release of G9 however, I took the leap. A couple characters, such as Nosferatu, Midnight Bones, and Lahr the Lion convinced me to try G9.

A few months later, and I've purchased a slew of human characters as well.

I only use DAZ for art reference. That is why it took me a while to decide on G9, but once I did so, I can tell you there is no comparison with G8 at least for the human characters. The details in the face, the posing, the skin texture, just about everything about G9 is uncannily human. So I'm glad I finally came on board.

The only item I would critisize on Genesis 9 is the lat muscles leading up to the shoulder girdle. For some reason this area doesn't work well with overhead (stretching) arms poses (see attached). With clothing it's fine, but for non-clothed figures it looks almost rubbery. It just doesn't look natural. But otherwise, G9 is fantastic!

Funny to read this. To me, Genesis 9 looks a lot more like plastic toys than Genesis 8 or even Genesis 3. Maybe it's the promos, I don't know, but it prevented me from buying most of the new stuff.
The same goes for several of the dForce clothing items. For normal figures just standing still they mostly look like stiff tubes. They only work well with bending limbs/movements. Conforming clothing keeps the wrinkles every used item of clothing assembles in real life.

To be honest, I have better luck with auto-fit than with that converter tool...at least for fitting to male figures. The converter tool wants to use the loose template by default on most items, and the loose template seems to result in stuff fitting like potato sacks. You need to change it to the tight template.

Overall, fitting G8/G3 clothing to G9 has been the one reason why I'm still not in love with G9. For males in particular, the chest area is a major issue.

It's the eyes that really turned me off. I can't clearly explain it beyond they're very glassy and make some characters look feverish or delirious. It's most noticeable in the main promo for V9 Mega Bundle. My first reaction was  "Yikes, the eyes! They are all dangerously insane" and it hasn't changed. If I can ignore the eyes - I can't - I'd love that promo image.

There is no Daz provided autofitting clones to fit G9 clothing to older characters, that is what the mentioned RSSY converter does.

Wow, I had completely missed this. Shows you just how little attention I'm paying to the store these days (which is a good sign, in my book).

    I'm absolutely getting this, though!

i think the clothes for each gen should just fit without having to buy a bunch of additional products. Across the board fit..but then no one would have to buy anything else than what they already have.

I bought the Victor to Victoria morph and it was....not a great. I like the idea of Victor, but to use the morph you must dial in Victoria 9 fully, then the Victor morph. I found that these two morphs don't play well with other male morphs, making Victor essentially useless if you want to mix him with other males. The Victor body was largely rather basic to begin with anyway.

Also the lack of hd comparative to genesis 8 is a real visual stumbling block to me. There is just a rather strongg lack of detail to the male genesis 9 line's bodies that seeems wasted opportunity even with characters like Mike 9, Lawrence erc.

So I've been under the impression that there isn't "anything new under the son" as far as the DAZ products go. That the only reason we keep buying new products is because they come up with a new base figure that is presumably better than the previous ones and then we rebuy all of the acessories refitted for the new figure. But if the new figure itself doesn't seem like a compelling upgrade then suddenly we have everything we need because we've already bought it for various previous figures. In some way, having G9 be uncompelling is the best thing that could happen.

I'm finding I'm spending way too much time trying to morph G9 to look more like G3 and it's dawning on me, why don't I just use G3? I like the body proportions and faces so much better. Even the bends are better IMO. I like G8 too but I have so much content, she takes like 45 minutes to load. I was thinking of converting some G3 or G8 characters to G9, but why? The make-up system is awful and I can't tweak iris colors or lip gloss easily. After all this time, I still find no advantage to G9. At least these sales are great for scooping up older content at great prices.

..well OK I finally did it, caught up with the train and climbed aboard (well, in the caboose) but only because of PAs like Raw Art coming up with unique characters like Bigfoot, Twiggant, and Dryanna.

I'm going to make a copy/paste of one of my posts in the thread " Its 2024, whats your stance on UBER vs PBR shader? ", because I think it expresses a good part of my opinion today about Genesis 9 as user ( not as modeler/sculptor/PA/etc.) .

"... From my point of view and personal experience: Until very recently I have been avoiding everything that had to do with G9 exclusively. Genesis 8/8.1 is a great product/work from DAZ. G8 is really good. I already know that it is not perfect and that we have a natural tendency to want more...

In this scenario, to unseat your own product you have to offer a really good replacement that significantly improves the capabilities of what you are already capable of offering with a mature product such as Genesis 8. This has not happened when DAZ offered G9 for use. G9 came out with many flaws, especially in the bends in the joints. The Genesis 9 situation was like an elephant in the room.

The new integration with the PBR Skin hasn't helped much either. PBR-S and Uber are practically the same. But with the drawback that they have their own techniques to achieve the same result. This usually clashes with the natural resistance to changing something, especially when there is apparently no great advantage. So far my little experience in using PBR-S is that it is usually more comfortable for the textures of the characters' skins. I don't think someone who has a lot of control with Uber would have much need to switch to PBR-S in most of their situations. Especially when for what are not skin textures PBR-S doesn't really provide anything that Uber doesn't have (there will be some exceptions, I don't deny it).

I recently tried using G9 again and many of its initial problems have been corrected (or at least I haven't had that horrible experience at the beginning). This has made me begin the path of slow and progressive transition towards G9.

The situation I have seen is that G9 still lacks plugins that G8 already has (especially for me those from Zev0 ) and that make G8 look much better and more realistic than the base figure. I suppose that over time these plugins will appear and the problems that are discovered in Genesis 9 will be corrected...

Even so, Genesis 8 is already a great product and it will take G9 years to simply catch up to its level and much more to overthrow it (from my point of view). The only starting advantage that I have seen in G9 as a user is its improvement in expressions (as a modeler it is surely different).

Obviously all this is my personal point of view (neither good nor bad), other people's may surely vary radically.

My advice, in case it can help someone and wants it, is to gradually make that transition to Genesis 9. It is a great figure and although it does not represent a radical leap in results, it is worth it and it is a bet to long term. The same with the use of the PBR-S. G8 and Uber can coexist perfectly with G9 and PBR-S and increase the range of tools at our disposal... That is the path that I am taking myself... "

Agree totally. I must admit I rarely bother differentiating between G3 & G8. Most clothing and hair is swappable (shoes less so, but that's the only biggish problem), poses can be cross applied and corrected with ease.  Virtually all textures and skins can be used on both. The only exclusively G3 texture thingy I've come across is Wet & Tanned Skins for G3, and I have an idea how to spoof G8 as G3 for long enough to get it to work - have yet to try it, but the idea is there. The product was definitely the right price, and if all else fails, getting the material right on G3 & saving a temporary material setting isn't a great hardship.

    Richard

I have suddenly found myself on the G9 train. It started slowly; I was drawn by some characters that I really like, unique to G9. Then low priced ones found their way into my library. Where my G9 purchases are slow is clothing, though I'm sure this will change as well. What really catches my eye is clothing that is compatible wtih G8 as well as G9. Yes, I'm on the G9 train, but I also ride in the first class section of the G8 one as well (based on the number of G8 bundles I have).

As someone who only started using the Daz store during Genesis 8.1, I jumped to Genesis 9 instantly.

So it has me wondering - did all the other generations have this much push back with people a year later asking if it's worth it yet?

I took a chance on some utilities to help with the G9 male chest and I'm able to minimize the squashed boob effect to a degree I find acceptable. But I still don't understand why the mesh needs to that density to the side, under, and between the breasts.

I bought the Victoria 9-HD preview bundle when it was available and have been struggling with G9 ever since. I have about 15 characters, mostly Daz originals, mostly female.

+ the faces are really nice

    - the chest / breast area is a compromise for both genders due to the unisex base

    - G9 does not bend well, especially shoulders and thighs.

    - arms are about 15% longer than for G8. In some poses that looks strange.

    - 8K PBRs are overkill, for example Van Helsing has 4 K and I don't see a difference.

    - G9 was advertised as more male clothes, where are they?

    => I focus on G8 / G8.1 and convert clothes from G9 if necessary

That's probably the most disappointing experience I've had over all. I want to use the characters for videogames with interactive licenses and even the medieval plate armour comes with fashion heels.
