I'm still riding on the 8-train, but I have to admit, there have been a couple of very good-looking hair products I wish were available for G8 characters also. Mos of the characters and clothes still give me the fibe that I already own it, so not in a rush to change trains. At this point, I think I'll wait for the Daz5 to release to see if anything mind-blowing is coming for G9, and if not, then I think I'll just wait and see what G10 will look like,

Did I miss some news? Is DS5 still being develeoped?

I've noticed that poses made for G8 and converted to G9 look terrible...not sure if the poses in that set were designed separately for each figure.

I haven't had bad experience with bends once I realized that you need to make sure all the pose enhancement toggles are turned on. Elbows was always my pet peeve with G8/8.1...and with G9, I was pleasantly surprised.

...so what about Riversoft Art's Bone Minion for Genesis 9 or Zev0's Pose Converter for G3/8/8.1 to G9?

The only one of those I have is the later...and it's been my experience that poses coverted from G8/8.1 to G9 look weird in the shoulder/neck area. I haven't tried from G3, but I would expect the same result, given how similar G3 is to G8. My only guess is that the different bone structure in the shoulders/neck is the culprit.

In my example, I put G8M (left) next to the base G9 (right). It's an extreme pose example, but it does illustrate the shoulders/neck issue very well.

...I just picked up the latter (Bone Minion was a bit out of my price range being it was the end of the month and it wasn't on sale).  I'll have to play around with it. Maybe there are some JCM correctives I can mess with.

...like all hair, can't hair for G9 just be manually fitted and perented?   I've even fitted Gen4 hair to G3 and 8.

It is definitely still developed, we just don't have any info on when it might be released.

Thank you. Nothing seems to help that crease at the collar bone. UNBM seems to help a bit where the thigh meets the hip. NM seems to make things worse and MM2 is not as good as UNBM by itself. At least, that's how I see it. Now I'm curious. I wonder... Thanks again! cool

    Welcome.

I could have spent more time fiddling with the morphs im MM1 and MM2, but IMHO Victoria 8.1 without additional morphs bends better than Victoria 9 with either UNBM or NM.

I appreciate what you did. It's helpful! All evidence indicates V8.1 bends more naturally, yes. One thing that stands out in your renders, V8.1 looks huge compared to G9. Measure metrics says V8.1 is 5'8" while V9 is a little under 5'7". Quite interesting!

To me that shows that none of them are perfect. Both have their own issues. Vic 8.1 looks like her foot is broken while Vic 9's foot follows the shin much better. I see several issues with Vic 8.1, while Vic 9 have others. A lot of issues can be fixed, or at least improved, with changing a few JCMs or morphs, but it's time consuming.

Exactly. Victoria 9 has problems, as noted, with the bend at the collarbone (although that could also be due to differences in the pose - I have that pose pack, and the g9 and g8 versions are slightly different) and also has some issues without the additional morphs at the hip crease.

Vicky 8.1 however has some problems at the neck (look just under her jawline) and bends worse at the shoulder (a difference made even bigger with the additional morphs on g9) and most of all the awkward foot bend (although again, that could be due to differences with the poses).

My personal experience working with both generations is just that, both have their strength and weaknesses and there are certain poses that one does better then the other. While I certainly don't think that Genesis 9 is an upgrade in the Bending department, I don't feel it's some kind of significant downgrade either.

Also one other thing is that some complaints that people have about e.g. limb length, characters looking too samey etc. are due to the specific models, not the base. If you look at the work of other vendors and not just the DAZ core characters things will look different. And much is a matter of taste too: for example I like that the female g9 core models are average size instead of tall like the g8 models - I constantly had to scale them down - but for others it might be the exact opposite and now they have to scale the models up.

Complaints about limb length and height strike me as very weird, given 1) humans vary in those things a lot so it's not like it's some weird alien look, and 2) G9 comes with a bunch of proportion dials to change any of those things to taste.

We can complain about whatever we like! You may not agree, but that neck and collarbone situation looks pretty awful. You got a magic fix for that? I'm all ears.

Look at the renders above and understand the following: According to their product pages, V8.1 and V9 are supposed to be similar in height. Yet in the sample renders, V8.1 looks gigantic compared to V9. If they were standing next to each other, I'd kind of expect V8.1 to be a head taller than V9. They're not supposed to be that different, where as V7 is supposed to be 5'10" and V8 is supposed to be fully 6' tall. Perhaps there is a reason why there appears to be large size disparity in those renders. Perhaps V9 was scaled down. Perhaps V8.1 was scaled up. Perhaps it's camera position. I don;t know and there has been no answer. In this case, it's not at all weird to comment on the apparent size disparity. If others do not see such disparity in those renders, I will also be surprised as it seems quite prominent. Any further questions or comments about that?

The fact that we even need comparison pictures to find the differences clearly shows, that there is not such a big difference between G8 and G9.
Some things may be better in one generation and some in the other.
    But that´s the point here.
DAZ and a few PA´s are trying very hard to sell us Genesis 9 as THE big new advancement in the genesis technology. But for me as a user it simply is not.
When G9 was announced, people expected a big leap forward but all we got was a new name and a different workflow to achieve the same results we allready had.

My highlight... This is one of the things I agree with. The big feeling I have about G9 is disappointment at an opportunity missed. Regards, Richard.

Personally, I think the thing one has to get over as a user is feeling of missing out when it comes to new items. I try to apply practicality of 'do I really need this?' to counter the disappointment of products not meeting my expectations.

I see. I suspected that. My last post was more in response to another post (not one of yours). So, is there a great size disparity between the two figures? I don't have either of them.

So, turning on these enhancements help resolve some of the odd bending issues? That would be good.

Yes, G9 has base toggles that you need to make sure are turned on. That fixes a lot of the issues. They are not turned on by default and I think that is the source of most of the problems people are having -

How have I missed this?! I haven't used G9 much, but that was partially due to all the bad bends I saw in promos in this store. I read the forums when V9 was released and no Daz person pointed this out. All I learned was "restore NOT zero figure."  Thank you so much!!!

I can't unsee how thick G9's eye rims are in general. It's almost an overkill and looks really weird from certain angles when a G9 character has eyeliner on the upper lashline... almost like when people have to apply thicccccck upper eyeliner to deal with eyelids rolled up due to aging lol.

Independent from any figure, you always have to add custom JCMs to the existing default Joint Control Morphs in order to get smooth realistic joint bendings.

There is still no way to avoid that procedure.

I set up a standing side-by-side, will post it tomorrow. I noticed V9 loads with -4.5 % proportions, that is the difference.

You can make substantial changes to how G9 bends with just sculpting. But it can only be taken so far before problems arise. Moving mesh has consequences.
Masterstroke is correct, if you want the movements of your character to conform to your ideal, custom JCMs/CBSs will be needed.
The morph in the image below uses no CBSs beyond default G9. All changes were sculpted in Blender.

It looks like Daz AI Studio will be using Genesis 9 only, which makes sense, as it is the latest generation.

If you look at my Victoria 8.1 to Victoria 9 side-by-side picture (caution: NSFW) Victoria 81 vs Victoria 9 - side-by-side by alien-area on DeviantArt
    https://www.deviantart.com/alien-area/art/Victoria-81-vs-Victoria-9-side-by-side-1038921915

the differences are personal taste. Also, if you are not focussing on portraits, but pictures showing the full character or more than one character, the 8 K pbr skins are overkill.

I got could results with https://www.daz3d.com/1-click-pbrskin for G3 and G8, so I guess I will stay with my installed base for a long time, casually adding environments.

G9 8k is only for the extra detail normals that don't automatically load in; it's an optional preset.

What I find amusing is that how frequently we have new lingerie after the launch of G9, instead of unisex clothes, which defeats the supposed purpose of G9 (well at least the boys can now play with girls' makeup). Making clothes to suit all sexes requires extra work, I know. So I am looking forward to G10 already, G10M and G10F to be more precise.

A lot of lingerie isn't surprisng - it's popular and relatively easy to rig, if not necessarily model. There have been other products that do benefit male characters, however - whether that has been a greater proportion than with separate figues I don't know. It also isn't the only benefit of using a common base - for example, quite a few people have picked up on its making it easier to give mixed groups of characters a family likeness by using the same morphs on each.
