The Streets of the Medieval (Stereoscopic 3D VR)

To get this scene to render I had to apply the scene optimizer script. Without the scene optimizer script, the renders came out completely black.

It has been 11 months since my last update in this thread. The hiatus in posts was primarily due to issues with image attachments, which I am optimistic have been resolved by now. In the meantime, I've upgraded my rendering computer, now equipped with a Ryzen 9 5950X, 128 GB DDR5 RAM, and several 4 TB m.2 drives. Additionally, I've upgraded my rendering capabilities by pairing a 16 GB RTX 4060 Ti alongside my existing 12 GB RTX 3060 (the other 3060 I previously used is temporarily removed), thereby enhancing both VRAM capacity and overall performance.

For denoising, I've shifted from using the NVIDIA denoiser in DAZ Studio to the latest Intel denoiser, a change aimed at managing larger scenes within VRAM by moving the denoising process to the CPU post-rendering. Additionally, I've enhanced the resolution of the images I render. Each left/right camera is now rendered at 5400x2700, which I then upscale to 8640x4320. This results in the final top/bottom image being 8640x8640. For the upscaling process, I've switched to Topaz Photo AI instead of Gigapixel, due to its improved ability to enhance initial render quality (and also because Gigapixel has become effectively abandonware).

I've developed a "VR Image Maker" program for Windows. It facilitates batch rendering of VR cameras in DAZ Studio, automates denoising, upscaling, and merging into the over/under format for viewing on VR headsets. The program can also create VR slideshows with crossfade effects and music (so-called "8D" music sounds great when viewing VR slideshows). While it's still in development, I plan to eventually release it.

Over the past 11 months, I've created several thousand VR images. The utilization of DAZ Studio assets and scenes in VR has proven impressively effective. It’s worth noting that VR rendering remains a domain that generative AI hasn't yet mastered, and it might be some time before it does. This makes VR rendering a unique and somewhat secure area in the digital art world, unlikely to be overshadowed by AI advancements in the near future. As VR headsets continue to improve and become more widespread, perhaps more people will start creating VR images and animations.

Sci-Fi Jacuzzi Room (Stereoscopic 3D VR)

Step into a mesmerizing stereoscopic 3D world of luminescent wonders as a futuristic cyborg, bathed in neon brilliance, shares a celestial soak with a nearby canine astronaut. Together, they gaze in awe at a colossal star, casting its fiery embrace upon the enigmatic Sci-Fi Jacuzzi Room, where shadows dance amid a fusion of red-orange and neon blue hues.

    Hey KomodoVR,

Great work. Found this thread and have been doing my own VR360-3D renders using DAZ too!
I've not been able to find a 'sweet spot' with my renders.
Things tend to get distorted as i turn my head left and right and up and down.
Looking at your samples they seem to have really good 360 clarity.

Also its difficult to determine what distance I should be from the subject
Also and difficult to determine the best aspect ration and resolution for the renders.

Wondering if you might be willing to share your 3D Camera Settings and some your Rendering output Settings?

How do I make a render like this? I'd like to see my Daz 3D characters in VR.

This is what I do for my stereo renders:

    1. Start from a new empty scene
    2. Create a new group (Menu: Create ► New Group...)
    3. Name it Panorama Cameras
    4. Set the Y Translate property to around eye level (something like 165) and lock the following parameters to 0.00:
      1. X Rotate
      2. Z Rotate
    5. Create a new camera (Menu: Create ► New Camera...) using Apply Default Setttings in the showing dialog
    6. Name it Left
    7. Parent the camera Left to the already created group Panorama Cameras and reset and lock the translation and rotation properties of the camera:
      1. X Translate
      2. Y Translate
      3. Z Translate
      4. X Rotate
      5. Y Rotate
      6. Z Rotate
    8. Make the camera unselectable in the viewport
    9. Set the following camera parameters:
      1. Lens Stereo Offset (mm) to -30
      2. Lens Distortion Type to spherical
      3. Use Local Dimensions to On
      4. Constrain Proportions to On
      5. Aspect Ratio to W: 2, H: 1
      6. Pixel Size W to at least 6000 (the H value should automatically follow)
    10. Select the Camera Left in the Scene tab and use the Duplicate Nodes(s) command (Menu: Edit ► Duplicate Nodes(s))
    11. Rename the camera to Right
    12. Change the Lens Stereo Offset (mm) from -30 to 30
    13. Save the scene as scene subset using File ► Save As ► Scene Subset...

This is how your scene should look like in the scene tab:

This is how the Currently Used properties should look when both cameras are selected:

    Notes:

    • The resolution of your panorama may heavily depend on the VR goggles you want to watch them with. With an old first generation Meta Quest you should not go above the 6000x3000 for a single eye
    • For a stereo panorama you need to render both cameras and combine them in a photo editor of your choice. The resolution for the 6000x3000 single eye render then is 6000x6000. I usually position the left eye on top and the right on the bottom of the canvas.
    • The character should be closer than you may think in the normal viewport! In the above example at maybe Z Translate:  -55
    • The spherical panorama does only show in Iray Preview or in a final Iray render!

With the advent of FilaToon, Mopat, and others, it will be possible to do many things that were previously difficult.
FilaToon's fast rendering makes it easy to experiment with video.
If FilaToon can render VR360 video, we will be able to do many interesting things.

However, I have not yet found a way to render VR360 video in FilaToon.
For still images, I think I can get away with stitching, but for video, I have yet to find a way to use ......
I hope that one day FilaToon will have the spherical lens selection active on the camera.
