There's a scene file in the starter essentials that'll set the environment up for you. You can switch between iRay and Viewport rendering in the render settings tab. For viewport rendering, make sure your viewport is set to filament. I think that's how it works.

sorry but is this written somewhere? I still can't find this. How did you know?

Wow I've been looking for a solution to these kind of render styles for a long long time. I do have some questions:

+ I saw above that you said the Filatoon Shader can be applied to anything, does it includes building, props and other stuff? How impactful will the shader has on these non-human object? And how much work I have to do to "convert" a scene from a normal style to the anime style?

+ As the shader can only work with Genesis 9, how about the converted character from genesis 8.1 to genesis 9? Will that work too?

    Thank you very much.

I know some of the PAs had a lot of fun converting, hopefully they'll post some of their work - you can do anything from buildings to props etc.

To convert - you basically have to apply the script so that it adds the filatoon options and the geoshell for the outline to each item. Then tweak the maps for the look you want.

The main thing with Genesis 9 is the work put in to the custom eyes... so yes you can apply the shader to Genesis 8 - but it won't work quite as well for the eyes as with the custom eyes.

If you load one of the toon figures it will automatically switch. To manually switch you can find it in the viewport dropdown - image attached.

To render you select Viewport as the Engine.

Ah, that's it :). Thank you so much!

It's where you switch between view modes, like Iray preview, texture shaded, wire shaded etc. Filament is the one with the lightbulb icon.

unfortunately I still can't render. I can't select "Viewport" in the render settings. I only have "New Window" or "Direct to File". I also tried to render with the Spot Render Tool and select vieport, but this doesn't work either. I only get Iray renders.

I'm trying the shader out with a prop (an armour) to test it. But somehow it appear black (seems like the base color in the surface tab is black)

Am I doing it correctly? I load the object, click on the surface tab, select all surface and apply the "FilaToon - Base" in the FilaToon folder in the Shader Presets (in the content library), then I apply the "FilaToon - Outline". The object would appear black unless I change the "base color" in the surface tab (which is set to black after I load the 2 "shader" files above. I've added light as well.

    Thank you.

Make sure you're using the filament renderer, anything else will show up as black

Also make sure you're not clicking on the geoshell, but on the prop. The geoshell base colour is black. Once you added the outline apply one of the presets depending on the material you're using. If you're using armour I assume it would be metallic. Turn up the environment weight on the filatoon shader to make it more or less metallic.

Alright, I think I figured out how to set up the thing. It doesn't seem to work with opacity maps, but besides that I think this is pretty good. Hopefully, more updates will come.

Thanks. This is very fun. That said, is there anyway to accentuate the black line in the middle of the nose as well as the lips? It's kind of hard to get a clear view of the nose line from the front (while the lips could be made a bit prominent with the mouth opened a bit).

Since there isn't a lot of content yet, I learned from Esha that especially older hair products can give very good results with the Filatoon shader.
You might need to remove the transmaps (opacity maps) for better results.

I never used Filament so I'm wondering what steps are required to switch any existing scene from iRay to Filament?

Is there a script? Do I have to change all the shaders?

Are the official instructions from DAZ hidden somewhere?

Is this an actual Shader - ie it can be applied to anything?

Does the latest version of DS 4.23 work in windows 10, I've got the impression that it needs windows 11?

DS 4.23.0.1 works fine for me in Win 10 - though I haven't tried all features.  I doubt very much that DAZ or anyone else would release Win 11 only software at this point, as Win 10 is still the most widely used Windows version.  In fact, it seems that many are reverting from Win 11 back to Win 10:

I'm a little on the fence about whether I like the 2 dimensional renders with this shader, but it looks great in an animation. Nice video!

Mouth Lips Part (3 shapes and 1 overall controller) was added under Pose Controls>Head>Mouth>Base Anime to control the gap between the lips to force line visibility at the lip seam; lines require a gap of space between geometry to appear. Three different regions so you can show the line where you want it, for things such as side smirk etc.

  • Dartanbeck Nice video. Rosie looks cool as a toon!

  • I'm excited for this. I liked using Filament before, except for the hair problems. I would set the opacity maps for hair on none, and the hair would render, but then you'd have semi-realistic skin textures with blocky, cartoon-looking hair.

I LOVE this product and the updates!  For my examples I am using a Face Transfer to animize her, so to speak.  What you need to do for any figure loaded outside of th default anime build is to manually remove the G9 face antomy (eyes, mouth, brows, etc).  Then you can add the toon versions and customize them!  I was confused as to why the toon materials weren't apply.  For my examples I have the 3D FT, then the toon version, and her anime render styles.

Note that with the glasses I have, it will obscure the anime makeup.  I have a couple products and it all works the same.  If anyone has an ideas on how to fix it, please let me know.

    Yes.

Create a couple of simple shapes that make a nice 'shine' on the glass - just like they do with the Base Anime figures' Floating Iris highlight sparkles.

Place those where they should make the glass shine, them remove the glass from the glasses.

You maight also go for an option like they do for the shadow plane of the eyes on those Base Anime.

Play around with using simple shapes with FilaToon shaders to get the right look

EDIT: Oh... and fantastic work, by the way! I love what you've done with this!!!

is this, or parts of it, Premier member content only?

From what I'm reading, all the new character products, the Vicky 9 toon, and all that, are not really needed to use this Filatoon?

I haven't played about with the toon shaders much yet, but is the makeup applied as a lie layer? If so, baking it all into the skin layer may help.

It's free to all. There's a paid expansion too - extra morph sliders, materials and some expressions: https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-9-toon-essential-shapes-bundle. Also available to all.
