Here are some experiments:
This is my Toon Dining Room (https://www.daz3d.com/toon-dining-room) with its default Iray shaders:
The same scene rendered in Filament:
And here rendered in Filament, with the Toon Shader and Outlines applied but without major tweaks:
This is pretty much out of the box.
I only switched off the outline for the glass parts in the window and the cupboard doors because those went completely black. I also set the outline offset to 0.5 (default is 0.1 which was barely noticeable).
As you can see, it still needs a little more work; I'd need to play with the ambient and rim settings and tweak the lighting to get a better result. I should also move the furniture up a little so the outline shows at the bottom, too.
I'd also need a different wood texture, I think, for a more toonish look.
But as it is, it gives decent results out of the box, a solid starting point for further tweaks.
You don't need a premier membership to use the new shader. However you will need to install DS 4.23 and the latest version of the default resources.
The only thing that is premier-only in today's releases is an extra shape for the new Vicky 9 (Vicky 9 Anime Dark Elf Shape Add-On)
And the Vicky anime release is available to everyone too. Only the dark elf add-on is Premier exclusive.
I'm a little confused. I did update all the DIM packages (Essentials, etc.), and I have toon shapes and materials for specific body parts or outfits, but I can't figure out where to find the shader(s?) or the settings listed in the first post. I couldn't find anything in the surface editor/presets either, but maybe I wasn't looking for the right things?
I can't figure it out either, @joanna! You're not the only one. I'm looking at surfaces presets, but don't see the FilaToon - Outline - Add script anywhere. I loaded in Daz Dragon 3 and added a geoshell and wanted to test out these new shaders! Searched on Filatoon and even scrolled entire list in presets, no luck.
I'd say I'm glad, but I'm not that you're stuck too. I even searched the store in case it was a paid product, but can't see anything relevant.
Someone else mentioned in another thread issues with Essentials update (missing original Essential figures), and while mine seemed to have installed properly, I'm tempted to uninstall and reinstall just in case.
I can't find them either, but I thought I used them this morning on a non-FilaToon Genesis 9 base figure. I was definitely rendering toons!
I did just reinstall the starter essentials because it had messed up my previous starter essential content in the smart content pane, but I don't think that's it. Can't for the life of me remember what I previously did.
Ok, found them. In smart content, Shaders > Filament > Toon. Hopefully that helps everyone get to where they are in whatever content manager they use inside of Daz. They're bundled under the Daz Default Resources product.

I don't have Filament in my Shaders in Smart Content. I'm using the lastest Daz Studio 4.23 public build (beta). I do have the new Base Anime figures in the G9 Starter Essentials.
Just my test of an outdoor scene playing aroound with the night time setting still trying to work it out. Also Genesis 8 using the characters texture, just added Filatoon to it. Did find the setting to make the character shadow more pronounced.
When I click on the Anime character, it says "/data/DAZ 3D/Built-in Content/FilaToon/FilaToon - Base.dsf" is missing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Starter essentials multiple times. Maybe I'll try that again?
Did you check the shaders section of the smart content? They are there for me, in the Daz Default resources section. They do not appear when you try to search for them, only when you manually navigate to them.
Edit: Maybe try reinstalling Default Resourcer then?

I never use Smart Content pane, so I'm of no help there. But they're under:
Shader Presets > Filatoon
Inside Filatoon are various other presets we can use!
That did it! I uninstalled Default Resources for DAZ studio 4.23+ and reinstalled them. The shaders are there now!

I still have trouble with the outlines.
On some items I get them to work quite nicely, like in the fruit bowl. On others I can do what I want, they appear to be very slim., like with the stools. Also, the shading isn't there yet. Currently, I'm thinking of doing shading in postwork with a dedicated. Or do I don't see anything "obvious" that would add basic shading to the scene? Filament is a book with seven seals to me right now.
HighElf: Outline uses a geoshell. Increase the Mesh Offset to make thicker outlines.
Be sure the light source is set to shadows: raytrace (rather than default of off)
Meanwhile, someone asked 'can you apply the shader to anything?' and here's one of the oldest assets I own (it rendered in maybe 5 seconds?)

Is there a good tutorial or documentation for Filament? I guess I will have to learn how lighting setups can be realized in that engine. Otherwise, I have to do the shading manually in Ps.
Growing pains, my friend!
A lot of how we get cool shading out of FilaToon with all of the new Filament Draw Options comes from lighting - how we place them, which lights we use, and how we set them up.
At the beginning of this video we see my current lighting rig setup.
One Distant Light and three Spot Lights
(EDIT: Actually you can see it without even playing the video - this image on the video's thumbnail is what I'm talking about below)
The yellowish shading from the left is a bit of a cascading rim light. The highlight on the right is a key light. The third spot light is pretty much where the camera is pointing at the character, and is set very slightly - just to help offset what the Distant Light is doing, which is the strongest of them all.
When we load a Base Anime figure, they automatically turn the Headlight "On" in Filament, so that we can see it beautifully no matter what else is going on in the scene. However, for FilaToon to really shine, we must add at least a Distant Light to the scene. At this point, you'll notice that where it is and how it's facing is less important than the fact that it's in there.
Now we can go to the Filament Draw Options and fing the Headlamp slider and turn it off.
Once that's done, we can truly paint our Anime/Toon look wonderfully using whatever type of lights we feel most comfortable using.
I begin by setting the look using the setting of the lights themselve - leaving the Filament Scene and Distant light sliders in their default state. This way I can truly hone how I want the lights to affect the scene.
To follow up on what I just said above, it's actually a LOT easier to get the main shading effects we want within Daz Studio using lights than it is to try and mock something up afterwards on the resulting render.
Once we get these highlights the way we like them, tweaking them more in post is just plain Magical!!!
I'm heartbroken, this shader is everything i've wanted. 2024 continues to keep on giving.

I had a story like that written three years ago but never got around to illustrating it because the toon characters just didn't look right . . .
... but with these new toon shaders, I might be finally able to do this story.
I'm thick as a brick. This stuff is flying over my head, like out of site. I decided to give it a go, but wow, I'm so not knowing what to do, I realize everyday how much I have no clue about in DS. I think I might have to start over, from the very beginning. #1 - this is DAZ Studio. This is how you launch it.
Yeah ... like the description by Mada seems right on..but what are LUT? I cannot get an outline no matter what I do? Why does it ask me to select a node? What are they asking for? It seems these shaders and associated files are all over the place. Maybe its more together in Content Library and not Smart Content? Then there's stuff in Essentials, Shaders, who knows where else.
Buy a PC for it. You don't even need an expensive graphic card for it. Filament is all CPU/RAM rendering. Just did my first test now, 3840x2160 on my laptop with only 16GB and it rendered almost instantly. I bet you can get a good desktop with, like, 64GB ram or more and a good processor for less than $500 bucks (even less, depending on where you live). I got one last year for those toon experiments (filament and 3Delight) and paid about this. I know Mac users are attached to it, but if this shader is all you've dreamed of, maybe it's worth it.
