"Lighting"
This contest is a general render contest with the focus being on how you use light in your image. We're providing you with links on Lighting from a variety of sources. Where composition is key to pulling a viewer into your image and leading their eye to where you want them to see things, lighting is what defines and enhances the viewer's experience when looking at an image. Lighting helps a viewer to "see" the story. The presense of light or the lack thereof are elements that provide us with the ability to believe the world we are looking at. It can tell us if an object is round, wither it is close or far away, what colors were used and even if the surface is reflective. As an artist it will be your mastering the use of light that will set you apart from the others. Your ability to control, where, how much and what kind of light is used in the image that will make a well composed image become exceptional. Below is a source list of lighting tutorials, articles and videos that will help you understand how to use your software, the different techniques used to light a scene and the theory behind why lighting is needed. This list is not compreshensive but a starting point.

So you're on duty again Kismet, Lighting, yes I failed majorly on that topic last year, but I have the feeling I have a much better understanding of it now thanks to things I learned back then or heard for the first time.
Well, I suspect this will be an IRAY contest, so I will just wander off.
I ave a question: I was wondering what were the prizes for this month? I see Destiny's Gardeen is sponcering but no Prizes set in 1st post.
Yes. I apologize for disappearing in January.
I hope not. Both Iray and 3DL have something to offer.
I will have to find out and get back to you Saphirewild. I'm not off to a great start this month.
Plz don't wonder off Teofa we all might need your help!!! :D
You know you can't stay away from us :D
okies Kismet I will wait patiently :D
Iray? Why? I personally love AoA's lights for 3Delight. This should be an interesting month. If you're into 3Delight, you're already not alone. :)))
Nope. DS, Carrara, Bryce and Poser are all allowed. Any render engine, Lux, Iray, 3delight, Firefly, blender cycles, whatever.
Yes. It's just that most have migrated to IRAY, I have no clue how light is done in a camera simulator, and can't help. A situation not uncommon to users of out of vogue platforms. :)
Me in IRAY
This is a great challenge! I've never learned anything about Uber environment2, or how it works. This would be a great time to get started with it. I have played around with AoA's Advanced lights, and although they are a bit complicated, they give excellent control over the lighting. I have fiddled around with Iray a bit.
Dang! By my count, I need to do at least 4 renders this month...!
: )
"D"
The 1st, 2nd and HM all get a choice of 1 product from Destiny's Garden store along with the DAZ GC.
You can post as many images as you like to the WIP thread. I worked on 3 images once but you can only post 2 to the entries thread.
okkkk now how much is the DC going to be? 1st 2nd HM????
I think this is going to be a tough one but I do actually have a Bryce render in mind for one of these. We will see. No clue what to do for a second but Its early and well, I will think on it lol. Good luck everyone! Huh, almost completely forgot that there were prizes lol.
Extra props if you do it in Bryce!!
Looks like I'm the first WIP this month.
Lol I will see what I can do.
Here is my first WIP just did a simple model with a new outfit (which I shaded as well) The lighting I am using is the Speed Lighting I just got for free from the Daz store
All advice is welcome:
EDIT: I CAN NOT POST MY IMAGE FOR SOME RESON NOT SURE WHY IT JUST KEEPS SAYING LOADING, I WILL TRY AGAIN TOMORROW
EDIT AGAIN: I HAVE THE IMAGE IN MY GALLERY FOR NOW STILL WILL NOT GO IN POSTING (SHRUGS) CALLED SPEED LIGHTING AND SHADING EXAMPLE
Empty space and special characters in file names may cause failed uploads.
I have tried to summarize a few things about the new forum over there: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/913468/#Comment_913468
As you can see, if you have already uploaded the image to your gallery, there is no need to attach it to a forum post again. You can get the link to a fullsize view in your gallery.
We'd rather keep the focus on the challenge rather than the prizes.
This is a nice start. What are your plans for this image?
Which program and/or render engine are you using?
I'm using Daz 4.9/Iray to do my rendering now a days, but I haven't a clue as to what kind of senario will be happening when it reaches the end.
(Sorry about any spelling mistakes, it's about 430 in the morning where I'm at and I should be trying to get some sleep.)
Sometimes you end up with the best images when you let the scenarious develop on their own.
I am looking forward to seeing what happens ( after you get some sleep of course ).
Stay. Contribute.
How one uses light is divorced from the render engine. These contests are about the art, not the tech. You don't have to know the particular tech to know what makes good lighting.
I throw my hat in for 3delight, will try to help on that topic where possible. For all WIPs it would be important to note which renderer you are using (of which program at all as Cho mentioned Poser Carrara and Bryce) to help you best.
This is my first share, hope you like it :)
All Props are freebie's,
Scene -

I did want to do more work on this, but returning to Daz4.9 today and loading the scene something screwy happen with aspect ratio and I couldnt get DAZ to render out the same images.
Anyways, here it is .....

I am not sure I am getting what you mean about: there is no need to attach it to a forum post again. You can get the link to a fullsize view in your gallery.
Anyway I am going to try this again today and see if I can get it to post: Yay it post thanks for the info about not spacing MN!!
@Saphirewild
Just with hovering the mouse pointer over the gallery image and open the context menu by right clicking, choose the option >Open in new tab<. Copy the URL from the adressbar of your browser and you can post your image in the forum. By using the Image button in the editor and paste the URL in there.
See, there is no image thumbnail attached to my post. The image is only uploaded in my gallery: http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/70503
@FilthyAppetite
Something went wrong with your upload. You may take a look at my description too: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/913468/#Comment_913468
