Check this person out.  It looks like (he/she? pretty sure its a he) is doing what you are attempting to learn.  I already picked up a couple of really good tips from watching his stuff.  Shannon Maer

Oh wow! That's amazing stuff! I'm very much looking forward to chacking out his videos - and maybe figure out how he does that! :D Thank you for the link, Sonja!

Most welcome.  They are actually tutorials, he tells you exactly what he is doing so it should be most helpful.

  • I'm going to have to watch those.

  • So, @FirstBastion had an end of year contest over on his Commercial thread and on his new Facebook page.  It was kind of fun.  The only requirement was to use one of his products so I got a little creative with my NPR skills.  It was lots of fun trying a new technique.  I really like the final image.  If anyone wants to see all of the other great entries, you can see them here.

So, I was in an actual Comic Book store today.  Comics have changed a lot since I read them, but since @algovincian has gotten me so into NPR images, I find that I'm looking at comics and graphic novels a little more.  I know there are a lot of DS artists that are doing their own graphic novels, too.  While at the comic store, I happened to see a comic called Dark Souls.  I guess it is based off of a video game.  I never heard of it, but the boys said they had and my oldest has actually played the game.

The artwork on the cover really drew me in and I had to look through the issue.  I must say the artwork is phenomenal.  My understanding from what I read on his DA page is that the artist does traditional graphics so no digital work.  Still, I picked up the issue they had, Dark Souls Winter's Spite issue 2.  There were three different covers for the issue and this is the one I picked up:

The artist is Alan Quah and the writer is George Mann.

I thought it was interesting that a lot of the buildings in this issue were very similar to the types of buildings that I've gravitated toward here in the DAZ store like Castillo Del Diablo and some of the crypts and dungeons sold here.  It seriously reminds me a little bit of algovincian's work, too, especially some of his more recent Iray endeavors with the trolls.  :) Greg has been doing some amazing stuff lately in Iray.

It's a great cover.   I think it would be a useful learning exercise to try to emulate that image. There's so much going on.  A 3D version would be interesting to see.

I really like that image from the comic book cover.  I might try to do something similar just to see how close I can get it.  It won't be exact or near as good but would definitely stretch my digital skills.

Thanks.  I was really impressed with how this one came out.  I'm going to have to sit down and write out exactly and as detailed as possible how I did this one so I can hopefully repeat the process.  There were a lot of steps to get this look!

    Ooohh!

Thanks for the link.  This is the direction I want to take my art next: using a render as the basis for a Photoshop painting.

I will definately check this out.

This is one of my favorite digital artists:  Aaron Blaise.  He used to work for Disney and now specializes in digital painting.  I have several of his brushes.  Unlike Ron's, these are more painter's brushes than stamps.  His water brushes are fantastic!  He is also very skilled at teaching and easy to follow.

[EDIT:  Oops, I just realized that the link below was to my subscription, sorry.  Fixed it.]

  • @dracorn  I've seen a few of Aaron Blaise's tutorials.  He does amazing things.  I wish I could draw that well but alas my talents are more mediocre than that when it comes to drawing by hand!  I think that's why I love the digital stuff so much.  It helps pick up the slack and I can let my creativity fly.  It's been eons since I've sat down and actually tried to sketch.  My middle son is becoming quite the artist though.  It's fun to watch him as he learns new techniques.

You can still do some painting on top of your renders - great postwork can really some fantastic art.

  • I upgraded my copy of DS to the latest version today on the Windows drive.  Everything seems to be working without any glitches so far which is good.  I spent a bit of the day putting together what one of my characters in one of my stories looks like.  She is definitely a work in progress but she is close to what I had in mind when she popped into my head.  I managed to get her hair really close to my ideal with the help of UHT2.  I also used Recipe Builder so now I can use the same hair color recipe no matter which hair style she has on her head.  :)

I started her out on G3F but she just wasn't working so I defaulted back to G2F which is still my favorite figure with which to work.  I more more morphs for her than I know what to do with and I also have more characters to mix in if that's what I need.  There is a little bit of Belle 6 in her so I could get those nice chubby cheeks but I think her eyes are a bit too big so I might have to work on shrinking those a bit.  However, one of my descriptions for her is that "her expressive eyes filled her face" and that her eyes are such "a dark green as to be almost black" so she fits my description almost perfectly.  I'll be working on her a bit more in the next few weeks as I work on her story.  At 19, she is the youngest heroine for whom I've ever created a story.

After mentioning this on Ice Dragon Art's thread, I've decided to try and be more forthcoming with WIPs that aren't quite perfect.  I have this idea in my head that if it doesn't quite meet my standard of perfection then I should put it up for everyone to see.  I'm trying to get over that.

You're right, her eyes are a little too big.  Gives her more of a doll-look rather than human.  The shape is good, very doe-like.  Doe better than doll, he he.  Her lower lashes seem a little dark - not sure if it is the angle or the lighting.  She has a nice pouting look.  Her lips are pale and seem to disappear in her face.  Is that intentional?  It is an interesting look, to have diminutive lips while the eyes are heavily made up.

  • @Dracorn  Her lower lip is tucked in a little.  I tried to do the whole bite the lower lip thing.  Not quite sure I succeeded.  Maybe if she had shown a little bit of teeth.  I'll have to work on that.  The eyes, yeah, definitely need to refine those.  Doll-like is not quite what I wanted.  Doe-like is a good description of what I'm trying to get to.  I'll keep working on her.  I'll be working on her more as I write her story.  I think the lashes are darker because of the lashes I chose for her.  I'm seriously thinking of changing those out for something different.  I want a kind of wounded innocence about her, but not quite that wounded!  :)  For only 19, she's already had a tragic life.  I want that to kind of reflect in how she looks.  I don't want her to be jaded, though.

However, one of my descriptions for her is that "her expressive eyes filled her face" and that her eyes are such "a dark green as to be almost black"

"I hope you are a life guard, because I'm drowning in your eyes"

I wonder if bad pickup lines sound better in Swedish?  Do you guys have bad pickup lines there, too?  ;)

    No, they don't.

Yes. That's probably a universal plague.

This is to satisfy Knittingmommy's curiosity. My DS layout. It's from 4.8 but I have everything in the same place now too, in 4.9.

Ah, so that's close to how mine is set up but a little bit different.  You have the double pane on the left.  That drove me batty when I had mine set that way so I switched to the single pane over there.  I've almost got the new install of DS set up the way I like.  Still tweaking.  Since I installed fresh in the Linux drive on another virtual drive, none of my settings transferred over.  On the good side I can have as many side by side installs of DS as I want that way so I can make sure everything is working before getting rid of the older version.  So far, the upgrade in both Linux and Windows has been rather painless. :)

I keep changing my layout because I haven't found one yet that totally satisfies the way I work.  But I'm working on it lol.

I like your heroine KM and am looking forward to reading her story!  I'm so glad that you decided to post your WIP's.

Aaron Blaise sounds familiar I will have to track those down, I have watched a LOT of videos lol.

Do you have one of those ultrawide screens?  It seems so much wider than mine and I have an older 22" monitor.

Oh, what I would give for a 22" Wacom Cintiq...

And an ultrawide monitor... but it probably wouldn't fit on my desk!  My dream set up would have one of those TV mounts for it.  But where would I put the Cintiq?

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

I would love the Cintiq as well.  I do have a rather large monitor (and its still not big enough!).

Alas, I will have to stick with my trusty wacom for now....

  • Mine is a 23" flat screen and I love it.  I cringe every time I have to use my laptop now because the screen on that is so much smaller.  I was having an issue with my layout on DS 4.9.2.70 where the icons on the right would go away and hide when I had a pane open on either side of my screen.  I didn't have that problem with DS 4.8.  I'm happy to say they seem to have fixed that again with DS 4.9.3.166.  I can have both panes open full out again and still see everything!  I've updated both my Windows install and my Linux install without any problems with DS at all which I'm very happy about.  :)

  • Oh, forgot to add that I don't remember what @Isidorn has but I believe it's a wider screen, too.

  • When work closed the local office and made us work from home, I "liberated" three 24" flatscreens.....

LOL! Well, if you're working from home because they wish it then you should still have the same conveniences. ;)

To satisfy Dracorn's curiosity, this is what I have: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS27A950DS/ZA-specs

It's a bit overkill as I never use the 3D features it has. But other than that, I've no reason to complain. smiley

  • @Isidorn  That looks like a great monitor.  What does the 3D part do?  I've never seen that with a monitor before.

    Very nice.  Cool-looking monitor.

This is what I would like to have (any wider than this and I won't be able to fit it on my desk)!

  • So, before my big computer crash, I was working on some scenes.  I have a ton of scenes that I've made but never rendered.  Now that I'm pretty much up to date with DS now and I'm slowly getting all of my plugins reinstalled, I've been going through some of those scene files I was working on and attempting to load them into the latest DS.  It isn't an easy transition.  I loaded up a scene I was working on of an all boy garage band and my saxophone player didn't have a sax!  I remember that sax.  It was a freebie that I imported into DS.  I'm trying to track it down but I haven't a clue where I got it from or where it is on my old hard drive.  I'm looking though.

I did come across a scene file of the old Dolphin here in the DAZ store that I was working on.  I either just did test renders that I never saved or I never rendered it out.  I've learned a whole lot more skills since that computer crash and I seriously do not think this image would have been quite as good if I had rendered it last summer.  It isn't much but, for an older model not made for Iray, I think it turned out really well.  I thought it was perfect for this month's theme of Nature in Llola's Render a Month thread.
