I couldn't resist getting VYK Dolly.  I had to play with her today.  I think I can do better.  So, I might set up another shot tomorrow.  Not tonight.  It's getting late.  While I kind of like how everything is dark except her face and skin, I'm thinking an extra hair light might add a little something to the it.  I'm not sure, but I'll try it out.  I do like how mysterious this kind of turned out, though, so I'm not sure about the extra light.  It might just kill the moodiness of it.  I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Dunno, I really like this lighting, as she dissapears into the blackness.  Maybe consider a little hairpainting in postwork in lieu of more lights?  I'm curious as to how your next render is going to look.

  • @Dracorn  Thanks.  Hair painting is one of those things I know I need to learn how to do, but haven't buckled down to figure out yet.  I do have a couple of tutorials bookmarked and I hope to get to them soon.  You might be right about the render needing something like that instead of more lights.  I tried new lights and didn't like anything I tried better than what I have in the above render.  I come back and visit this render again once I've done the hair painting tutorials.

As for my next render, I have an idea I'm working on with Jeroyn.  I'm not sure if I'm skilled enough to pull it off, but I'm going to give it a try.  We'll see what happens.  At the moment, I got side tracked yesterday trying to do music for a video project.  I hope to have that all wrapped up today and then I'll crack open DS tomorrow and finish working on my idea for that next render.

  • For anyone interested.  It took me a little bit of trying to learn new software, but I managed to do a decent slideshow of some of my artwork.  I used OpenShot for my video editor which is a free video editor available for Linux, Windows and Mac.  I also used LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) to create the track for the video.  The whole project was kind of fun.  I'm a little exhausted, but I do like the results.  It isn't perfect, but it's all my own and I'm rather proud of myself for doing it.

That looked very good and I liked the music.

A couple of observations if you don't mind.

Slow down your transitions and make them go from one image to the other rather than have the blank area between them.

Stretch the time each image is on screen, the default seems to be 1 or 2 seconds which really isn't long enough to view them properly.

Try to stick to the one or two transitions all the way through the sequence and only change every group of images rather than randomly. The change in transition type might indicate a change in grouping or image type, landscapes, portraits, action or toons etc.

This one of mine goes between stills and video, not renders, but it is the shortest one in my collection (I had to replace the original sound track, which I had done with Magix Music Maker, because it was a near match for a published song from a band whom I had never even heard of :) ), but it shows the speed of transition and image viewing length that I go for.

Best viewed Full Screen and in HD.

  • Very cool! I have no idea how to even put something like that together.  Looks great!

Thanks.  I thought it was a great idea just to figure out the video editing software, but I'm glad I did it.  I learned a lot from doing it and now I have a nice little video with some of my art all in one place.

@Fishtales  Thanks.  The music was fun to work on.  I love music, but I've never tried to do that before.  Lots of great advice and I'll work on it.  I couldn't figure out how to do smooth fade in and out from one image to another so there wasn't that bit of black while using the transitions I was trying to learn how to use.  I'm sure there is a way, I just need to find it.  As for the timing, that's all on me.  The default is actually really long and I had to shorten it.  I tried looking to see if there was a set time that most people use and everyone seemed to be all over the place on time.  For the next one, I'll see about lengthening the time each image is up.  You aren't the first one to mention that to me.  @Isidorn was my guinea pig last night and saw it as soon as it was uploaded and he made a comment about the timing, too.

I'm learning that editing is a whole other creature all its own that I've stepped into.  I have SO much to learn.  It's fun, though, seeing what I can do with it and it adds to my skills that I can use with DS and my art and what I want to do in the future.

@Algovincian  Thanks so much.  I was actually surprised that I had so many pieces that I wanted to put into the project.  There were even others that I would like to have used, but I didn't.  I think I'll have to work on my song, maybe loop it so it's longer and then redo the timing on the pictures.  I might be able to add back in those images I wanted and had to cut.

@IceDragonArt   Thank you.  I'm using OpenShot which is for Linux, but they have a Windows version, too.  It looks pretty good and isn't all that hard to get started.  It's learning the fine editing details that take the most work and are the hardest to figure out.  The software itself actually is actually pretty good.  A lot of it is drag and drop onto the tracks.  As Fishtales pointed out on my video, the hardest part is getting those little tiny details to work out right.

I'll keep working on learning the software.  In the meantime, I should actually render something.  I've spent the last several days on this project and no renders!  I kind of binge watched tutorials for both the music editor and the video editor to figure out what I was doing.  And, then there is my writing.  No writing in two days.  I need to buckle down today and work on the writing.

Using a crossfade may help with the perception that it's too quick, too, since each image will be viewed as it transitions out.

I had a look at some videos, I don't have the software you are using, and it looks very similar to most other editing software. It looks as if you are using the supplied Cross Fade Transition which is only affecting one image which is causing the blank space between images (you might have to put it on both touching edges to get it to Cross Fade properly but I am not sure even that will work). To get the Cross fade across the images you don't have to use it just move the right hand image so that it is over the end of the previous one. If you pull the right edges out on each image until they are approx. 7 seconds long and overlap each image by approx 1 second you should get a smooth cross fade.

So, of course, I couldn't wait until morning to try to figure out where I went wrong with my postwork.  I tried it again and toned some things down and tried a little bit more restraint.  That's hard for me to do now that I'm learning all of these cool techniques.  Anyway, here is attempt number two at postwork.

100% better... toonstyle scene goes well with toons... but I can always find something... here it looks as if Star's left leg is stuck in brown deerie's ear, except when modified... also Star's upper half blends too much into sky... I didn't even notice Star in any renders until someone else mentioned her later so had to go back and find out were she be. :)

Thankful am I you avoided worst of hurrycane... living in STL I only get mild side effects of them... then I do have to deal with an occasional Tornady.  I've come to the conclusion that we don't live on the best planet in the Universe... habitable yes... friendly not.

Count me in like last year for It's Raining Men... except I don't know if I'll be posting a render tho... keeping track of more than 1 of my own threads as well as catching up on others when I find time.  Also I like the idea of having the final renders separated for final renders... makes things a lot easier for whoever does the choosing of winners.

Another animation test.  This one uses Lennox by @DarwinsMishap.  I did manage to adjust my settings in Iray so that it didn't take as long to render so not too bad.  I tried out OpenShot, a free video editing program available for both Linux and Windows platforms.  So far, I like OpenShot.  It uses Blender for for cool animated titles and I tried one out.  I couldn't quite figure out how to get the audio tracks to work the way I wanted.  I'll have to work on that skill a bit.  Next I need to work on adding some credits at the end.

5 secs is too short for end credits... even with a 10 sec vid I couldn't fit an animated intro or credits... I prefer to have all 3 with the actual anim/story being the longest... proper balance is everything.  You are welcome to peek into Animation in Carrara - Let's Animate - Q&A - Come One & All.  I've used quite a few programs that are all similar but with different approaches... all use keyframes of course.  I've never used DS to animate but it's interface is similar to Carrara and others.  I'm nearly sure that you have seen Ivy's Art & Animations all done in DS I believe... kewl stuff.

@wgdjohn  I have peeked into your thread and found some useful info.  I am a little behind in catching up on it, though, so I'll have to do that soon.

    @Algovincian
    @Fishtales

Thank you both for the advice.  I'll check into that.  It's a learning process and like everything else, I still have a lot to learn.  I'll get there.  Baby steps. :)

So, what have I been doing?  Well, the writing is coming a long.  I actually had a good day yesterday and today.  Lots of good progress so I'm happy with that.  I finally figured out a part of the plot that had me stumped as to what the heck was going on with my characters.  I have to say that now that I know where this is going, I'm excited again.  It is amazing how figuring out one part of the plot will make everything else just fall into line and you suddenly know the whole story and it suddenly goes in a totally different direction than you originally thought.  Hopefully, that move will make it better.  At this point, I think so.

On the DS front, I picked up the Rarestone Face Morphs Collection packages for both male and female Gen 8 figures.  I had some fun playing with both in Simtenero Randomizer.  I managed to get some good looking guys who will make great cover models.  Just have to do some fine tuning on their morphs.  When I started with the ladies, I somehow had the morph percentage turned way up.  The first one I did of the ladies was downright scary.  @Isidorn thinks I should do a render of said scary lady.  I'm thinking about it.  However, it is a good idea to make sure you keep those morph percentages down or might get something totally unexpected.  Sometimes, that can be a good thing.  Before I turned the percentages down to a more reasonable 35%, I did manage to get this lady:

I love her chin and I think she would make a good witch.  Unfortunately, the only good old hag, witch type robes I have is for Genesis and they didn't exactly pose well with her.  I might have to try and either re-rig the outfit for Gen 8 or make an outfit and rig it for my witch.  I haven't decided which I'm going to do yet.  In the meantime, I put the Belle Dress on her and changed to more sedate materials and did a render of her before I do crazy things like add warts and give her a more witchy looking skin.  She Victoria 8's skin on her right now.  I went ahead and set up a regular promo test shot of her like I would every other character and I was actually surprised that she does have her own brand of beauty despite that pointy, witchy chin.

Edit:  added dropped word for clarity.

  • She's very pointy, so I think a witch would be great for her. :)

  • @deathbycanon  Thanks.  I have plans for her.  It will be interesting to see how she changes and evolves.

That morph reminds me of the Spitting Image puppets.

(for anyone not familiar with them, here's a music video by Genesis, featuring the puppets)

She would make a good witch just needs a wart on her nose now. LOL

Interesting concept, I didn't expect to get the morphs that extreme. TZhe comparison with ths spitting image puppets is true

  • @Isidorn  I have heard that song before.  I'm a big Phil Collins fan so I've heard a lot of Genesis songs.  However, I had never seen that video before.  I like the puppets.  I'd have to agree.  My witch does look a little like that.  :)

@Liana  Yes, I'll have to take her into Hex or Blender and see about giving her some warts here and there.  I'm thinking one on her nose and one on her chin and then, maybe, a few on her hands.

@Linwelly  Yeah, I usually try to keep the percentages down with the Randomizer.  I think the default is 35%, but for some morphs I like it closer to 45%.  For some reason I wasn't really paying attention and must have moved the slider up higher than I really wanted because I had it all the way up to 65% or 70%, I think.  Happy accident.  :)

She does have a little thing going on under her chin that I'll have to see if I can smooth out where the morphs are really extreme.  I'll have to see if I can take care of that while I have her in Hex or Blender adding those warts.

I look forward to seeing what you do with her. :)

Here are two characters I created on the Teen Josie 8 base.  I used Simtenero Randomizer to get me started then did a little bit of fine tuning until I got the looks I wanted.   Morphs include the Genesis 8 Head Morphs, Rarestone's Face Morphs Collection for Genesis 8 Female, Genesis 8 Female Head Morph Resource Kit and Kit 2.  While I love them both, my favorite is how the one on the right turned out.

I really like both versions! but I especally like the postworked version becuase of how the shadows are more prominent. Looks great!

I like the one on the right as well.  And the postworked version is gorgeous!

  • @Aloreea and @IceDragonArt  Thanks so much!  I do really like how the postwork turned out, too.  Now, if Zev0 would just release a version of Skin Builder for G8, I would be so happy!  In the meantime, I'll have to see about doing something in SB3 and switching it over to my two girls.
