Thank you
Nice fae! Thanks for sharing.
Had this idea for a while and the sale today prompted me to finally get the frog, so putting the start of this down before I get to working on the 404 Challenge. I will settle on doing one render at a time one day, honest
That is very cool. So it actually comes with the water beads on it that way or did you add those?
Thanks The water droplets are an option that comes with it, I'm not sure I'd even have considered doing it on my own, let alone managing to get it to work like that.
A similar technique can be accomplished using a few simple models of water drops or droplets and the ultrascatter script. But I've been wanting to check out what he's done up close. Anyway, thanks for answering.
A new D&D campaign has started, which means I get to create pictures for all the player characters... and actually have to finish them
Up first is Tiberius!
A half human half sea elf.
Second to the party is Escanor, a firbolg.
Next to work on will be the gnomes.
First attempt at Fleur, the gnome ranger. A few issues with this image I need to sort out like the light on the hair and the foot poking through the shoe
And here is the final version of Fleur, set a lot of the character's portions (nodes? Not really sure what they're called properly) to not be visible in the render and moved the light a little, also re-jigged the pose slightly. Then did a few bits of touch up in Gimp as the light still had a few stray pixels of bright white through the hair.
And the last of the party is done, this time with Obby 'the Rat'.
Player asked for the character to look sneaky... wasn't quite sure how to do that in a portrait style picture but he seemed to like it at least
Now the party's all done I went back to working on the frog riding fairy... and in a moment of madness added a hammer!
Won't continue working on this version, the hammer is not staying.
On a more serious note this is with rotating the HDRI dome, slightly re-posed camera, another major fight with dForce, and hopefully some slightly improved posing. Still need to stop the hair intersecting the wings and once everything's done will be adding motion blur.
And here is the final image
Llillilliana Dewdrop
Love the D& D characters! Wish I had the time to play a proper game. I stick to the single player rpg's online because I know I don't have time to actually get together with anyone and put any serious time into playing.
the final version of Llillilliana looks great!
Thanks! We try to play one evening each week if we can, but I also tend to mostly play RPGs when I play video games too, never much got into the sports, racing, and FPS genres.
Hoping the party like Llillilliana as well, they haven't seen the final picture yet, though they did say the name looked like my keyboard had a fit
And my first dwarven character for the setting.
Not entirely sure I'm happy with this one, something feels a bit off with him with trying to make him look more dwarf like.
Darrok Bruenorson
I think it might be the perspective. He doesn't quite look short enough from this vantage point. That's the only thing I can think of because his body proportions look about right, you did a great job on his hand size.
Thanks. I hadn't really considered the perspective on it, and it might well be that, so far I tend to just point the camera straight at the subject. Something to bear in mind for future.
Inspired by the heatwave we've been having here...
Dance of Summer
Canvas effect added using GIMP.
Now if only the rendering didn't put out even more heat...
Been a while, but it's time to start working on a few monsters that any erstwhile adventurers might chance across.
It's time to start working on a proper character again, and this is the start of the initial workflow. So far posing and surfaces are all unmodified (save for a couple of opacity settings), while the shaping menu has been delved into some.
Wings are always something I find difficult to work with, I'm never sure whether to zoom out so that all of the wings can be in the frame but the character is not taking up so much space, or to zoom in and get the opposite. For now I'm going with zoomed in more.
I struggle with this as well. It can be very difficult to get a close up of a character with giant wings. I'm trying to go with something that clearly shows they have wings without losing too much of the character to distance. Unless of course, I want the dramatic effect of the full wings in which case I am willing to lose some of the detail in the character for the overall effect.
Love your monster!
Thank you, the monster was honestly a bit of a rush job, but the less human a character is the easier it is to get away with it
I'm hoping I've got a reasonable balance for the wings with Melissa, though I may angle them upwards a bit more, the upper portion of the image feels a little empty, or perhaps I need to move the camera up more, will experiment later.
A few more iterations of work on the character has come to this so far (~90% convergence): -
You might try lowering the camera a tad then angling it upward. That will help fill some of that top space with her head and wings. Sometimes this works. Sometimes, not so much.
Been kept busy elsewhere for a few days, so not had the chance to reply. Thanks for the idea, I did try going with the wings pose change before I saw your reply and that feels good to me now, so something I'll bear in mind for future.
Also realised this scene has torches, why don't I turn emission on for them? Hopefully improved the lighting with it, and also added a spotlight behind her head to make some attempt at highlighting. With the new lighting I also had to read up a bit more on surface transmission as she suddenly got a little red in an unsaved picture attempt .
DoF still to be added as I don't like doing that until the very end as it increases the render time even more. Converged to ~90%. Found this Power Pose tab, so I may also have a little look at that too.
I really love this render! Wish I'd thought of something this cool
Trish
Didn't know you had a gallery topic. Pretty cool. Little wonder you were able to figure out motion blur in one of the NU contests.
Like the faery & tree frog. AD&D... Saving throw for magic + saving throw for poison. Don't think anything is going to mess with Miss Dewdrop. : )
Best!

Tunging those torches on and adding the spotlight really helped to ground her in the scene. It looked good before but now, when you compare them, she looks like she is in the room and its not just a background (I know whe was in the room before but now she fits) I'm probably not explaining that very well at all. And I would never have noticed if you hadn't done the lights, it would have still have been a good image. I find it so interesting to discover little things like this that take a picture from one level to the next. And I never know just what will do it. I learned something today so thank you!
@Stormlyght: Thank you, as soon as I saw the frog in the store I knew I had to use it.
@Tynkere: Thanks, the motion blur picture I did in the New User contest is from before I created this thread if I remember right, was definitely my first time of delving into using motion blur in GIMP, though I did do a juggler image for one of my very first NU entries with motion blur using 3DL. I've stopped entering those as I felt I've been here a little too long to go into them now.
I do love this character, the party has encountered her on a couple of occasions , though not as an enemy. I would like to do a render of her with Obby, but my graphics card gets a little unhappy with two characters normally.
@IceDragonArt: I'm not good at explaining these things either, I am very much in the trial and error (and more errors ) stage of learning rendering. I think it might be that the floor gets lit up enough that you can see it comng into the foreground instead of it being so dark it almost doesn't look to be there unless you look closely, not sure though.
Heh. "New" must be a very relative term for the contest. I got DAZ in September last year and blundered right into the contest. If I'd have known member join dates, would've chickened out.
So faery is with thief looking guy. Hmmm... I'd have guessed Fleur (ranger?) or the dancing priestess. (Another one that's pretty cool.) Trying to figure out if gown is dForce or not. Haven't had time to do much with part of DS yet.
Anyway, a bit envious you still play D&D. Our group disbanded quite a while ago as people turned to jobs, families, etc. Enjoy through others I guess.
Best
