I am using DS 4.10 and am not having any particular problems. I like to do outdoor scenes and tend to use the free 16K HDRIs from HDRI Haven. A month or so ago I had problem with it crashing, particular when I tried to click on a selection to open. After some trial and error I had windows update the driver (through Microsoft) for my GTX 1080ti and havn't had any real trouble since.

I have not trouble with 16K HRDIs either and I have only a 7 year old i7 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 16GB system RAM. The only reason I deleted all my HRDIs is I am more interested in cartoons than attempts at realism (and the HRDIs' grounds look almost always distorted and flat no matter the image).

@Novica, I don't remember you complaining about DS continually crashing with your old computer. Could it be something in the drivers of your new laptop that is not correct or that is conflicting? DS doesn't crash for me while rendering.

I remember a period a few months back where Novica was having a lot of trouble with crashing. So were a lot of folks, and there is a dedicated thread on it over in The Commons, undoubtedly buried a dozen or more pages back. And that was with the old computer. However, it couldn't hurt to make sure the new laptop is using the latest drivers. And if it's using the latest video driver, it wouldn't hurt to try taking it back a version or two. Sometimes the latest is great for games but not the best for what we do with 3D. I'm still running a much older version on the Beast. (If it ain't broke, etc.)

It started crashing when I switched to the 10 version, on both the Alienware 51 and now on the Titan. I did mention it a few times the end of August and early September (probably on the crash thread over in Commons, I can't remember exactly where to be honest.)

It's a message stating the studio has encountered an error and must close. Sometimes it gives that mesage and then abruptly shuts down, other times it keeps the message up until I close it.

I suspect though that people often think that DS has crashed when it goes into "Not responding" mode for a long time (sometimes several minutes) but that's not always the case. If you wait it may very well come alive again.

Mine was crashing a lot at the time that a lot of us wrote about it in the crash thread.  Now, for some reason, my Daz seems to have mostly stabilized.

Nice render. I like the river and lake in the grassland system but the grass looks unnatural to me. I think it’s the color.

Yes, it is a bit too green there. Looking at the promos, it depends a lot on the lighting how the grass looks.

I bought 3DU's Toon Roaches so I thought I'd too a quick render & review.

They are pose compatible with G8F/G8M and even older pose sets mostly. Being wildly differently proportioned though from human one must adjust the pose afterwards to be more what one intends but then it's still a big time saver and who doesn't have to do that most times with using people poses on people anyway?

They also have build-in expressions and pose sliders in the usual places. They come with 4 different bug shapes. I will try the shiny iRay car paints, lame & silk fabrics & scale shader material from the PC+ club and elsewhere in the future to give them the looks of insects besides roaches.

They are the usual 3DU high quality toon style models. I am happy I bought them and look forward to using them in the future.

@nonesuch they look brilliant. I was so tempted by them but I don't have the budget at the moment. I've got them wishlisted ... along with the rest of the toon animals smiley

I know the feeling because I know Cartoonized for G8M is likely coming out this month & I'd already spend the rest of my budget on some 3DU interactive licenses. Cartoonized for G8M will have to wait for November for me and at full price! crying

Why is it necessary to purchase the interaactive license? What do they allow that you don't get with just purchasing the product?

Because i using them in interactive game engine to make games. I can still render though without interactive licenses or I could create 2D sprites with them and do game that way without interactive licences.

That’s what I’m holding on for too ;-) Hopefully I’ll be able to pick it up when it comes out. It’s always a case of juggling and prioritising with this hobby :-)

Oh I see, I could never quite figure out the need for the additional license so thankyou very much for the explanation

HelloO all. Does anyone know easy way to make a set of surfaces selectable together (to make easy shader/mat changes to ALL of them at once) in Daz Studio 4.10?

I have now several vehicles by TruForm which are poser-ready rather than daz and need to be rematerialized since chrome, paint and plastics etc don't look right in Iray from poser-engine materials, but the models are just LOTS of separate parts grouped and or parented and  there are *MANY* surfaces therefore that are all the same material, but which must be separately picked out in the surface editor from a seemingly endless scrolling list of parts/surfaces and the ones with same materials aren't listed together in the order, so... super tedious.

I'd like to be able to find and separately select ALL the surfaces that should be, for example "Vinyl" and then make some sort of group or preset that would let me select the same scattered set of surfaces the next time I need to, with just one or two clicks, so they'd be selected and ready to hit with a shader or adjust the material in surfaces.  Googled, and saw a DAZ help thingy that said you had to use the polygon tool and yadda yadda, but that seems even more tedious but also seemed unnecessary since these surfaces are already defined on the different parts/areas of the model; I don't need to define them, just need to make it easy to select a specific bunch of them scattered across the model without having to scroll and pick and scroll and pick and....to select dozens of parts/surfaces every time I want to adjust them.

    Any help appreciated....

I'm headed to the store and gas station, the 4am NHC forecast has the models moving (future) Hurricane Michael back west  a bit and now discussingthe possiblitiy of it going to Category 3 (major hurricane) since it strengthened even under 20kts of shear and the pressure dropped. Now  forecast up from 100 to 110 mph and climbing with every bulletin, so not waiting to get gas. We already did the truck and hubby's car. Milk had already flown off the shelves at Walgreens, CVS, but we found some at a small supermarket. I feel sorry for people who wait until today.

Will be headed to bed after I get back and not online today, want to run the errands while everyone is still in bed. Going to be ultra hectic here tomorrow.

If the surfaces already have a common value different from other surfaces you can right-click with the Surface Selection tool on one of the surfaces you want, then use the Select Surfaces with the Value Of command and pick the property that distinguishes the surfaces yiou want.

For a repeatable option, in the Surfaces pane option menu (the lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab) select Edit Surface Selection Sets, then in the dialogue click Add, name the set (e.g. Chrome), make sure it is selected, and check the surfaces you want to include. A single surface can belong to more than one set. These sets will save with the model.

Well.  I've never been in a hurricane before....Have milk, may have to pick up a couple other items this morning.  Plenty of water.and got gas yesterday.

  • Here's a useful tip that I worked out the other day and thought I'd share here. It's probably old news to most of the veterans that frequent this thread, but might help some people...

So, you're busy setting up a scene and adding content from deep within your content library, and maybe tweaking surfaces with the geometry editor, and perhaps throwing in the odd primitive too. And the problem is that as you add stuff, it comes up with the Daz Default shader and you want it to have the Iray Uber shader. Well, that's easily sorted - you just go to My Daz 3D Library/Shader Presets/Iray/Daz Uber and click !Iray Uber Base. Fair enough, if you can remember where to find it (I put it at the top of my category tree to make it easier), but you still have to navigate away from the bit of the content library you were working on just to apply that shader.

Wouldn't it be better if there were some way to apply that shader without otherwise affecting your workspace? Well, there is!

Go to My Daz 3D Library/Shader Presets/Iray/Daz Uber and right-click click !Iray Uber Base. At the bottom of the menu it shows you is "Create Custom Action." Click that. Daz will put an item in the Scripts menu that applies the shader. So now, all you need to do to apply the iray shader to a surface is click Scripts/!Iray Uber Base in the menu, no navigation required!

This is going to save me so much time and trouble - I hope it helps some of you as well!

That's strange, but I can't found Shader Presets in My Library at all. Also there is no Shaders in Surfaces Presets. What's going on? Is it a conspiracy? Do I need to install some shader packet? surprise

Are you looking at "My Library" instead of "My Daz 3D Library"? You need to be looking in the one that has the rest of your Daz content in it.

Okay, it is NOT HDRIs causing the problem. I used DA Real World LIghts (remember the Helena gallery image?)  and the danged studio crashed two times.  So it's not HDRI causing my problems at least. SO annoying.

I just tested Colm's Pro Studio on the latest DS 4.10.0.123. Basic wear on G8F using HDR Light 15R rendered fine, no crashes or errors in the log file. I also have the latest Nvidia driver 416.16 from Oct. 4 for my 1080TI.

Will try DA Real World Lights in a few min. and get back to you...

No crashes or errors with DA Real World Lights. I used the Mount Rushmore render setting with the slight red tint (same scene as I used with Pro Studio).

Do you have the latest Nvidia driver? Try resetting your render settings to default before using the light sets and see if that helps.

Well.  I've never been in a hurricane before....Have milk, may have to pick up a couple other items this morning.  Plenty of water.and got gas yesterday.

Luckily you won't be in one unless it's a direct hit and right now, looks like Appalachicola is going to be landfall. You were smart and did the right thing geting gas because the lines get long and stations run out one to two days before landfall. Then some get resupplied and others don't, so who has gas constantly changes. Quite fun- not. Wednesday the waves will be 8-10 feet higher,  Tuesday 5-8 feet, so enjoy the beach! (No swimming of course, red flags already flying.)  The wind whips up the sand and it can sting, the secret is to get near where the water has wet it, and you won't get bombarded with those stinging particles.

Can you tell I've videotaped hurricane waves before?  I posted on the thread that I was Accuweather's photo of the year, I beat out nine AP photographers,YES!  I got a shot of a 20+foot wave cresting OVER the Pensacola Pier. I got out of Gulf Breeze right before they closed the bridges- they had announced the time, not waiting until it hit 39mph on the bridges. That's another thing you need to know over in Destin, bridges DO CLOSE at that windspeed or whatever they have decided, so don't assume if you drive somewhere the bridge will be open on your return!

What you can expect in your area is very balmy, winds gusting 35-50 mph or so.  In other words, like a thunderstorm rolling through. Even just an hour away in a hurricane (or less) makes a big difference, particularly when you're on the good side, which we are. (West)  The tornadoes TEND to be on the East side. We're supposed to get 2-3: of rain, no big deal, you may get 3-8" tthough. Localized varies a LOT, we got less than 1/4" during Nathan, and downtown Pensacola got 6 inches!  The rain should really get going Tuesday night/ Wednesday.    So Tuesday, even possibly Wednesday,  you can just enjoy the surf and get great photos  :)

One tip:  If you are ON the beach, there will be flooding though (ground level.)  Particularly high tide. It will start before Wednesday as all that water is being pushed toward us now. Be careful where you park your car, even in a parking lot. 2-3" of rain is expected, so park in the highest part that you see. (And away from trees. Falling limbs OR the tree, when the ground gets satuarated and 40mph winds, they can get uprooted.)

The problem with testing something is it doesn't do it every time, so it I were to test it for example, it may do just nifty and then I'd be saying, "I tested it and no problem."  I will, however, check again to see if I did the latest driver for the 1080, I did something but can't remember what it was. I was busy reinstalling programs, etc and it all became a blur LOL. (Thanks for testing it though, btw!)
