I'm having a devil of a time figuring out how to use any of these - seems they all require figures that are only available for purchse? I can't seem to find any that will work with only the free content you get with Daz. Paid content is a non-starter for me as I have no income at the moment thanks to all this crap going on. I'm not trying to do animation or anything, I just need a variety of characters in TMP and/or TWOK uniforms in a couple of different natural poses (walking, standing at a console, standing and talking, etc.) to populate still set renders like the one attached (which was made in Blender). The reference image I used in creating the attached render shows some good examples of what I mean. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone could provide.

I was about to call you out on lifting pictures from seanr on scifi-meshes to use for your own nefarious purposes...lol.  I enjoyed your bridge renders back in the early 2000s, and am glad to see you're back at work!  Daz just released a free (at the moment--I'd grab it immediately) Daz-Blender bridge that might be of interest to you, in terms of rendering Poser/Daz figures within blender itself.  I use both, but personally prefer Daz for figure work, given how it was designed for that purpose in particular.  If you go to the first page of this thread, there is a compliation of free Trek stuff for Poser/Daz.  If you're looking for a TWOK uniform to match that set you're working on, that's where I'd start looking.  The best TNG-era stuff I've found is by nvent3d on Rendo, in my opnion, but it's not free.  There are still some uniforms to be found on sharecg that mostly make use of Valiant and Courageous, which are outfits for the old Victoria 4 and Michael 4 figures.  Those outfits can be used on the newer Genesis figures with auto-fit and figure clone  techniques.  As for poses, the free Genesis figures come with basic poses that can be used for getting started.  You just need to install the "essential" packages for Genesis, Genesis 2, etc.  For free or nearly-free stuff, that's where I'd start.

By the way, if you join the Platinum Club here, which for just a monthly subscription is $8, you can get a slew of items for $1.99, including the Valiant and Courageous outfits with which you can make use of a lot of free Trek items listed on Page 1 of this thread.

Does anyone know if there are any sets of Quarks bar or even just a dabo table that would work in DAZ?

I don't recall seeing anything else related to DS9 on any of the regular sites, apart from a Bajorran springball court, and the round wheel-style airlock that I think is on VP.

Thanks, and darn. I don't have the skills required to make any of it myself so I guess no DS9 renders for me.

Looks good. Does it mix well with the DAZ "little old lady" characters for the proper Talosian look?

(Well, maybe not all that old, but under all the makeup the Talosians were actually cast as small women. The contrast of mixing that with their telepathic "voice" produced some lovely mental car crashes — I thought when I first watched the episode <censored> years ago there was something weird about them...)

Ah, yes, Meg Wyllie was cast as the lead Talosian, "the Keeper".  Born Feb. 15, 1917, she would have been a few months shy of 48 when donned the prosthetic makeup (arguably the most elaborate and intricate for the original series).  So she certainly was not "ancient".  They probably tweaked the facial makeuo to accentuate her "lines" and wrinkles to make her look older and more frail.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

LOL, thanks, there will be a lot more coming in the future.

Where would I find that bridge? I'm curious about the quality of it more than anything as I build all my own sets, though.

As for the Platinum Club, definitely interested and I could really use those outfits since a lot of the Trek stuff seems to use them, but I literally can't spend a penny on stuff like that for the foreseeable future (I'm unemployed and flat broke right now). I do have all of the freely available Genesis stuff, though, so there's that at least, but sadly, hardly anyone seems to be making Trek stuff around that without paid requirements.

it's in the DAZ freebies on the store page. By bridge, it's more an easy way to send files from DAZ over to Blender.

I like this new S8 suit that just came out.  Apart from the balaclava, I think it makes for an interesting exploratory suit for non class-M planets.  It looks tough yet flexible.  I just swaped out the balaclava from Planet Explorers, since the S8 one looks a bit too militaristic for idealistic Starfleet types.  I think the helmet is quite remisicent of Michael Burnham's EVA suit.

Got a quick question. Still plugging away in my copious(!) free time at Iray materials for the Ptrope TOS Bridge set, and I'm not quite sure what to do about the lighted frosted glass panels below the Bridge station consoles. Some of my sources have them all the same colour, some matching the lit ceiling panels, some not matching. Ideas/suggestions, anyone?

Are some of the sources more canon than others?  Trek certainly is inconsistent at times. I'd put visual on-screen evidence at the top of the pile. What are the other sources?

It's possible they were changed by the third season, but rgere are scenes in the first year showing characters like Spock and even Uhura working within those panels and those close-ups teveal the panels to be perforated "grilles".  Here are two screen captures from "Balance of Terror" and a one from "This Side of Paradise" that reveal them in great detail.

When not showing their "innards", the grilles usually have some translucent material behind them that is backlit, as demonstrated in that first image, the far grille behjind Spock's shoulder.

  • They did masssively change the lighting in the middle of second seasonand onward and basically ditched the noir style lighting and shadows of the first season entirely and it's a more standard lit set. I imagine it was partly for time, but also a change of producers.

I can't get at my old episode tapes right now, so it's mostly Youtube snippets, fan art, and freeze-framing on New Voyages/Phase II episodes.

Ahah! I'd forgotten about that little detail. Ah well, the frosted glass look is close enough. I'll just keep digging through Youtube and see what turns up.

One thing I did take note of is the set recreation museum in... I think it's Ticonderoga, NY. Can that be taken as a proper canon source, at least for colour fidelity?

For that, I might recommend asking fans at the TrekBBS.  Then again.  Ask 5 different members and you'll somehow get 10 to 15 conflicting answers.  Some fans somehow manage to debate themselves! cheeky

I think Sanjay 8 with Luthbel's Wise Wizard mixed in at 50% bears a bit of resemblance to the captain of the Kelvin that gets speared by Nero.

The official trailer for the new animated Trek series, "Lower Decks".

This did give me a chuckle, given that this is a self-parody of the entire ST genre (esp the TNG/DS9/Voyager period).

Not much a fan of the cheap quality of the animation however, considering that they clearly spent ALL their production money on the 3D software (probably DAZ3D, which is free) and the 3D models (probably from Vanishing Point or a few other names that can be found here, or Renderosity, or CG, which are also free), thus leaving them with pretty much a $0/yr budget to hire decent animators.

Other than that, not something that would really entice me to sign up for CBS to watch it.

Although, there is supposed to be a hint of a Caitian in the crew somewhere....? cheeky

I needed a TOS-era cargo container. These don't open. Image is a link to my page with a zip file download to the OBJs for each.  Instructions on my page.

  • Hi, guys.  I've recently tried using Mylocha's skins, and most of them work fabulously, but for some reason the V4 Klingon, V4 Vulcan, and V4 Orion all come out looking like this.  Any idea what is going on, or what I can do to correct it?  Thanks.

  • I loaded this us to see, it's a case of the face texture doesn't match the rest of the skin textures. I would guess Mychloka used a merchant resource as a base map and added vulcan/klingon features to the face and darkened the skin tone but didn't apply this to the other materials.

You might need to take the limb and torso textures into photoshop or similar app and try to match them up using levels or some such. It might be a bit of a pain trying to get it just right.

Got it.  Will try it, just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong on my end.  Thanks, buddy.

  • You could also try changing the diffuse colour on the surfaces tab to match them up. I had a quick play with it and you can see the results of 30 seconds trying below. As the face is darker I left the diffuse white there and went for a pink on the head and torso. you can see the arms are unadjusted. Naturally altering textures is a one time job where as this way you would need to do it whenever you make a new vulcan.

I actually played around with the diffuse colors quite a bit, but was never able to get a satisfactory match.  I think I'll probably go into photoshop and see what I can do about getting them to match up a little better.

The weird thing is none of the M4 Vulcans, Klingons, or Andorians have this problem.  Only for V4.

After spending an inordinate amount of time adjust manually bit by bit in photoshop, I was finally able to get the V4 Klingon textures to match up almost perfectly.  Shader adjustments for the limbs and you've got an almost perfect match.  Anything else I'll just clean up in photoshop after rendering.

  • Anyone ever had the ships load up with reversed textures/writing?  Not all of them, quite a few have loaded up for me like this:

This can sometimes be corrected by adjusting the horizontal/vertical tiles in the Surfaces tab, but it doesn't always work.  In some cases (but again not always), you can go into the texture files and manually reverse the images or text.  Any idea why this happens, and how it can be avoided?  Thanks.
