Playing with Iray again and I have so wanted to render AOA's Camera in an unbiased render engine for so long. I am in awe od AOA's talents in real world armour and his modelling and shader making. Check his site out http://www.ageofarmour.com/

I converted all the bump maps in Normal Maps, Sub-Ded everything as it was designed to do so. Lit with a studio HDRI but I think it isn't good enough to get the results I wanted. Still a bit of grain in the shadows. I am going to try using lights instead when I get time.

Thanks AJ. I am not that happy with the camera so I relit it and doing another render now and this time it looks much better.

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

Same materials as the last render but with a different HDRI.

Dynamic table cloth over a cube, Simulation Frozen and Sub_D applied.

Normal map driving the weave with the Iray Velvet shader applied and adjusted to my taste.

This image rendered in a third of the time as the first one and further shows that the quality of the HDRI is paramount for more realistic lighting and render speed, giving a quick convergence time because there is more quality light provided by the HDRI.

I much prefer this image than the previous. It shows the surfaces off better and gives a true representation of the texture maps. Note the Recorder at the rear of the camera. In particular around the blue light readout, see how it is dark in this image as it is on the texture map but in the previous image it is light grey.

This is straight out of Daz Studio as a PNG and saved out in Photoshop as a JPG. No postwork at all has been done. However I did take the image into Photo Effects 8 and did some layered effects but IMHO it was spoiling it. It has a really nice soft box light appeal to it, shame to spoil that.

  • Great to see you still blazing that Iray trail Szark. That tropical cave looks stunning and very Vue like. Simply brilliant.

If you get renders of that quality then I don't blame you!

I do love 3delight as I pushed myself to learn more about it but for the time being I am just having way too much fun using Iray.

Both cams are fantastic yes I like the cloth affect, detail, lighting better in 2nd, more detail in the eye piece to.  Believe most of us, won't be returning to 3DL.  CU on the flipside.

OK I think I have it cracked.

Cube enclosing the scene about 4 mtr across, 2.5 mtr high and 8 mtrs long. Iray Plastic white 0.80 diffuse. Used the Geometry Editor Tool to reverse the normals, not sure if I needed to but I did it anyways. LOL

Used Tako's backdrop http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/952985/#Comment_952985 back the same mat as the cloth, floor the same mat as the cube.

Made two softbox lights using planes about the same size as photographers softboxes. Used Lumen output. One key and one fill. I did make an open ended pyramid cover for each of the planes in Blender to stop light from spilling sideways due to the nature of mesh light rays not being perpendicular to the emitting surface.

Two Spots at the rear for rim light.

Three spots on the ceiling above the subject pointing down.

Camera settings the same as he used in the vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toIbDUi8orU ISO 100 shutter speed 1/125 and Fstop 2.6 I think he said.

    and it works.

If I hid the cube enclosing the scene it became too dark, you need to light bounced around the room to make it work in a realistic way.

When I have finished testing I will post the specs or just make a downloadable preset so you take a look for yourselves.

It was suggested I try IES profiles and when I get the right ones I will try it.

This rendered in under 10 hours, I say under because I stopped it at 10 as I was in bed but I reckon it could have been shorter.

Keeping busy with teaching...I only  wish I had more time to play and experiment. Can't complain though, two more weeks til the Christmas break. I hope you're doing well?

Those last two renders are really realistic especially the first one...

Hi Pendraia yeah I hear you, I have been that busy it is only now that I have  alittle time to play. I am well thanks

Thanks I also like the last camera render best using lights instead of HDRI.

I think that is one of the best renders of Robin's rose that I have seen.

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

    Thanks Cho

  • Evening Szark. Looks like you're still rendering like a demon. Well done!

That rose looks sure realistic. I have only briefly played with Iray. I might get around to it eventually.

    Good job!

Afternoon Tako Thanks the background is your backdrop prop, re-textured. :) Thanks for that. I am just having fun learning Iray at the moment. I had to do some testing with 3DL last night, boy was that strange but soon got back in to it.

  • You're welcome. I know the feeling about going back to 3DL. It has a whole different vibe.
Sometimes its like switching from cable back to aerial antenna but then I remember
    we have digital hd now....

Glad to see my prop getting some use out there. ;)

Been working on this for a couple of hours a night for a few weeks just to unwind before hitting the hay. Had no idea what I was making. I just wanted to use the figures in some way. Quick and dirty Iray material setup on everything, no auto convert. I did make a few new maps derived Normal maps for a few things. Sun Sky, direction controlled with the Sun Dial, a touch of haze 2.00, increased Sun Disk Intensity way up to 30.00 and tone mapping 200 ISO. Sun low on the horizon.

Now the same image except I broke the render into layers using Mask and Multipass Toolbox http://www.daz3d.com/mask-and-multipass-toolbox Making layer masks I worked from the back forward so I could add some Photoshop Fog and Smoke Brush work. Each Brush stroke had one layer each and some where set to Exclusion Layer Blend mode to add some variation. Then I blurred each smoke and fog layer according to the DOF present. While I was making masks inside DS (oh yeah I had to revert all the surfaces back to 3DL defaults to make the masks and set the render engine to 3DL) I made one for the front terrain that emerges from the water so I could darken the edge more easily where it meets the water.
