Oh I really like this one!
Starting to get the hang of this style. If I ever restart my webcomic, I think this is the style I'll use. It's a little timeconsuming, but then again the panels in the webcomic are a lot smaller than the stuff I've been rendering.
I like your experiments. I think the images would read better if you inco-orperated monocular clues to depth perception - eg reduced contrast, reduced line size etc for far away objects, different hues and saturation etc . I've learnt a lot from your experiments - thanks.
Good thoughts. It's tricky, because I juuuust barely have a handle at creating reliable results with what I have.
And part of the problem is that the style I've been most emulating tends to have limited depth cues (IE; woodcuts)
But it's worth doing... currently seeing if I can tweak the style more toward Chinese paintings and similar.
ah I just googled ukiyo-e depth clues, very interesting,
i'm interested to see where you go with these - the match pallette script in some programes is handy for borrowing pallettes from eg hokusai
does studio have an isometric camera?
I like the character; I'm using combinations of Topaz Clean and Simplify (with a few PhotoShop actions) myself and find I'm enjoying this much more than the years I was using PWToon and related shaders -- there's a certain amount of extra freedom, and the ability to automate the postwork on batches of renders really speeds things up.
Again, really like the character, well-done!

A Chinese effort (Sumi-e watercolor filter in FilterForge)
Well, that's really pretty! :)

Miss Pannikin rendered in Carrara with VectorStyle 2
That's cool. :)
Wow! That has me wondering if I should side-track this summer and try Carrara again. I wish the interface was a little easier to see, although I think at least now you can make the fonts bigger.
Thanks, firewarden.
Still trying to figure out, how lights affects VectorStyle 2 renders and how to get the best of it.
Below are the two renders of Aiko 6.
If it helps, I'm pretty sure you can do that style in PWToon or LineRender9000 (if those are easier for you).
More playing with FilterForge. Nice thing about more simply 'apply filter' stuff is that I can use Iray, which, for me, is way faster.
This uses Fern Lake tree, TerraDome3 'archipelago' morph + water, and Iray Skies. Plus an old sea turtle model.
Most likely. Carrara and my old eyes do not get along.
Applied Pencil filter in Serif Draw Plus to the iray render of Dante 7.
Nice VectorStyle work, Artini!
I wish Vector Rendering was possible in Daz Studio... I have VectorStyle 2 for Carrara, but like many others I prefer using Daz Studio 4.9.
Thanks, Kaleb242. I also prefer using Daz Studio 4.9, but could not resist the NPR possibilities in Carrara.
I have bought VectorStyle 2 a long time ago, during its sale, but have not used it so often until recently.
I do all posing, putting clothes on the characters in Daz Studio and save all of it as a scene subset.
That's way, I can simply double click on the saved scene subset in Carrara object browser and
everything saved appear in Carrara automatically. Very convenient for me, because I am still a beginner
in Carrara, even though, I have bought it many years ago.
.
There's a couple of ways to get an isometric(ish) camera in Studio.
First method is simply selecting a camera and turning off perspective from the camera properties. This removes all perspective from the camera.
Or, you could physically move the camera very far away and then decrease the focal length. That way you can still have a little perspective if need be.
Another render from Carrara Vector Style 2 of Unicorn:

@Artini they are wonderful. I had Vectorstyle many years ago but took it back -wish I didnt now.!
TheNathanParable thank you for that answer - I noticed the occasional woodblock made with that 'non- perspective'
Above and beyond the call. So generous.
And those images you posted were to die for.
I concur. I've been theorizing how to approach that sort of thing. If there was a renderman-compliant vector renderer then someone could just make a plug-in to support that from within D|S. The best theory I have at the moment is some sort of post-processing on LineRender9000 line output to convert from raster to vector. Unfortunately, the "detail" sort of lines are not easy because there aren't many programs that do "centerline" tracing and even then they give fairly "noisy" results.
Getting object / figure outlines as vector is fairly simple in a 2d graphics program and I feel confident that could be automated.
Another theory would be having some workflow to outsource the rendering to an engine that supports it, but there's a lot of complexity involved there.
Still noodling on the subject.
Thanks for posting these. How are the actual vector files, though? Would you mind posting an EPS or AI, even a simple image of a hammer or plain object would suffice. I'd like to see how easy/hard it is to edit the Beziers. I can see there are a few things in the unicorn that would need to be cleaned up. I'm hoping the conversion to vector doesn't convolute the outlines too much.
Seeing this makes me very excited that I picked up Carrera while it was on sale. Is the VectorStyle2 part of the base package, or is it an add-on?
Needed an illustration for a detective story, so I played around with the noir technique I've been using lately. The figure is M4 with some OLD Poser 4 hair (it tends to look better with this technique). I composited several renders made with the Poser 11 Live Comic Book Preview. The sketch effects were created in Akvis Sketch, and scaled up about 400% (in other words, the source renders were 4000 px wide, and I created a Firefly render of the image in Poser, rendered at only 100 px wide - I then scaled it up in Photoshop. I did this because I wanted the sketch effects to be VERY rough so they would show up well while I was scaling the image.
The middle, sketchy image, was created by adding a tone effect in Manga Studio and using the blue region as a mask. I then edited it by hand so it would spill out in certain areas.
I'm torn between the dark blue and the sketchy images, although I'm leaning toward using the sketchy image. Any thoughts or preferences?
(BTW: I really suggest looking at these full-size – the smaller versions are missing a lot of detail.)

This is a VERY cool painted effect. I would never guess this started out as 3D. Seeing output like this makes me excited to try my hand at Carrera, which I finally bought last week during the March Maddness Sale. Got it for around $20-$24, if I recall correctly.

Concept is a ranger variant that bonds more completely with a wolf companion.
Hey thanks, yes Carrara has so much potentil - out of the box :)
