I`m asking as a semi prodessional Daz artist.
Am I getting this correct? If I as a comic book creator, used a morph from one of the exclusive characters to create a new character to add to an ongoing comic series, I`d have to keep subscribing every month to keep that character in my storyline?

If so, Premier is not feesible as it would cut into profit from the sales of my comics.

It`s hypothetical because I make my own characters from merchant resources, but just incase ( It doesn`t have to be a character) I wanted to kit bash something like a chair from an interior that was exclusive to Premier membership.

You would be correct.  Once you unsub, no more Premier content.  I hopefully see this model (pun intended) going away after the backlash and having the tier structured for just discounts, something everyone can enjoy.

By Premier Content you mean the Priemier Exclusive Content correct?

Yes, only the exclusive content will become unavailable.

If they dropped Premier to, say, $14.99 a month and remove the ecxlucisve content, sold those same products and gave a better discount instead for Premier members, I think that would really help cut things down the middle.  The discounts are what everyone can use, and not everyone is interested in the potential products that'll come with Premier.

    Agree.

IMO, i think even $20 would be ok for a LOT more people as long as the upgrade path (from daz+) is reasonable and the perks don't make 'noise'. What do i mean?

For the upgrade path, simple. Offer what everyone in DAZ+ is asking. Just charge them $9 or $10 per month on top of DAZ+(*). Don't take away they already paid months, there is value there and convertion offer was insulting. Cancelling Premier while keeping daz+ in effect should not be an issue. Tracking that time separated is not rocket science, is just a single extra column of an already existing table.

Perks don't making noise. Well, the plugins and exclusive content with DRM are a problem. Classic Carrot and Stick issue here. It does not matter if Premier has a lot of carrot to offer, if it has some stick then is a problem. Why did Daz+ worked so well? Because it was affordable, provided carrot and absolutely not a bit of stick. Do the same and offer the free exclusive content as freebies but only TEMPORALY exclusive. As in: When you are subscribed you get some free goodies, not retroactive to previous months(or weeks, or whatever) and add the window of exclusivity as extra perk. Plugins should not be included, keep selling the plugins individually or in bundles. Exclusive plugins in a subcription for a Free Program is not a carrot, is a stick because because of the fear of loosing. Same with DRM content that could render your scene files obsolete, that is a massive stick. I know some stores that offer content on subscription, with and without limits; but once you downloaded or added it to your scene it keeps working even if sub lapses.

I'm positive that with changes like that subs will increase, good plugins will sell for top $ (as they always did) and Daz could earn a LOT more than current setup for premier. And don't come with the tale of this forum not being representative of userbase. Is more likely that non posters are even more negative than regular 'ofenders' in here. Past lessons have not been learned. Like i read on another comment, currently this smells too much like Seasons (i was around that time) combined with the DRM fiasco (i read a lot about).

(*) I also think DAZ+ should go back to its previous pricing. I don't find it valuable as a constant monthly sub for casual buyer. Keeping it interesting with quarter/yearly upfront makes customers (even broke ones like me) to pay more attention and be tempted to spend an extra buck from time to time. If people having several years upfront for a few dollars is a problem, the solution is simple: stop letting promos to stack with the subscription price. There, how hard could that had been?

Exactly right.  Anything you have that is exclusive to having Premiere.  The free bundles you get with your coupon can be kept afterwards but things like Aiko, no.

    OK, thanks.

I don't like that, but so far nothing has been released as Premier Exclusive that doesn't have a similar public release instead like the Vicky 9 Bundle, although I really like Aiko 9 Anime a lot.

Worse, according ot the FAQ, if you unsub and then resub, there's no guarantee you'll regain access to the content you lost when you unsubbed (I've bolded the relevant part of the answer to Question #5 about content):

    5. What is the exclusive Premier Only content mentioned on the Premier page that is only available while you have an active Subscription?

    • With each Character Bundle release (2-3 per month) there will be exclusive content that will be auto-added to the accounts of Premier members at that time.  You can keep and use this content for as long as you have an active premier membership.
    • Examples would be Aiko 9 and Dark Elf Shape for Vicky 9.
    • Content that is removed due to letting a Premier subscription lapse is not guaranteed to be available on reinstating the membership at a later time.
    • We currently do not plan to offer Add-on Licenses to the exclusive content. (3D Printing, Interactive etc.)

Wow.  Other sites offerring their 3D assets on a subscription basis make it clear you retain ownership of and the rights to use any content you downloaded before your subscription lapsed.  This makes Premier semi-useless for commercial use.

No kidding.  This is why a lot of us are yelling Bullwinkle Squirrel right now, as without this and the amount of credit being offered for existing Daz+ accounts, you'd probably be seeing minimal flack.

Right.  Most of the time you retain products you get during this kind of timeframe.  My question is really about licensing for these "free" assets.  Because we are constantly paying for them, do we need to buy the 3D print or Interactive licenses if we want to use them commercially?  How do we buy them-by submitting tickets? (Not that I'd want to license any of these, it's a rhetorical question). It's too messy just on that front.

I've just converted my 10 months left of Daz+ for Premier. 122 days which is 4 months for a value of $76.13 against an intial payment for full price $70 Daz+ membership back in August.

I just used up my free monthly bundle on the Vicky 9 product which is $99 full value.

Despite my reservations naturally about the subscription model, Yes, I know I have huge reservations against it, as I refused this route with Substance Designer/ Painter, my Marvelous Designer 12 and another reason for me using Affinity products and also just recently a perpetual upgrade to Marmoset Toolbag 5 and others.

With that being said I feel Daz is a bit different. You just cannot deny with Daz , we all just Save , Save , Save, shed loads of money with discounts. Even converting this Daz+ membership technically just earnt me $6.13 on something I have used for 2 months. It really is a no brainer at times. I feel even if I cancel after 4 months, the free monthly bundles will most likely be profitable.

Well then.  That actually makes it more confusing-does that mean there's absoutely no way to use them commercially?  One can interpret that as either not needing the licenses or since they aren't being offered, we can't sell digitial prints?

The standard license covers that, though perhaps Daz should update the licenses to clarify the conditional status of these subscription items. Before, it was simple, if I had a license for a character I could for example render Aiko 8 and print out the pic in a comic book and sell it without concern. That was an allowable use of Aiko 8 and I have a license for her since the day I purchased the product. And I'll have that license and could reprint my hypothetical comic book at any time. But with Aiko 9, you only have the content while subscribed, which begs the question, what about the images made with that content after I stop subscribing? To go back to the comic book, would I have to destroy all copies the moment my subscription ends? I'd no longer have a license to use that content, after all. Could it never be reprinted without an ongoing subscription?  Could it even be used in such a way in the first place, or do these items fall under the more restrictive limits of the Editorial License? Important questions that should have been fully hammered out before any exclusive content was released.

The usage is the same as the standard license. If the license was lost (lapsed membership) then you wouldn't be able to create new renders (well, the ciontent would be disabled) but the renders created while the license was in effect would still be usable under the original terms.

Where in the License does it specify that works created with licensed content are still covered if the license for the content is revoked?

Oh and for those wondering about using the premier content offline, finally got a second PC set up specifically to see what the content looked like and decided to try cutting it off from the network and changing the date to see how long the content can go without a login phoning home. looks to be 72 hours. So to keep the exclusive content functional, you'd need to login every three days to refresh it or it'll stop working until you do.

It would need something to keep time with, absent an internet connection, the system clock is all it has unless it kept a process running in the background even when Studio wasn't open.

Not, I think, alone - I would suspect it is able to spot chnages made to  try to circu, mvent the need to relog in.

Ok, saw in another thread that premier members can turn off the ad on the side of the New Scene window.

If this is indeed a premier "feature" I'm again troubled and want to know how deep into 4.23 this goes? I've refrained from downloading the plugins and exclusive content because I wanted Studio to continue working exactly the same after my subscription is done.

What else must I disable or remove so that my Studio install won't be affected by my subscription status?

Is DS 4.23 itself affected by subscription status? I used 4.23 before I subscribed to Premier; I don't see any difference now that I have an active subscription.

Apparently there's small differences like being able to turn off the ad panel on the side of the New Scene box. It is beyond troubling that subscription status alters the function of the program like that. Even if it's a small thing I want it GONE.

If you don't use Connect to install (I assume you aren't using the exclusive content) then just wait and eventually the Premier features will switch off (I don't know how long that will take).

  • TesseractSpaceTesseractSpace Posts: 1,406

And what other things switch off with it? Do I really need to examine every single menu, every nook and cranny just to make sure there aren't any other surprises waiting? And how would I even know what is a premier subscription feature? nothing about the ad toggle gives any indication that it's only for Premier users. Do I need to load 4.23 on an air-gapped system and refuse to log it in, so I can meticulously compare every single thing to find all the differences?

I'm not reassured by that given we've only just now been told about the ad toggle. I just want a plain install of 4.23 that won't change in any way regardless of my subscription, that's all. Is that really so much to ask?

Given your response in the other thread, I have tried uninstalling Daz Studio and then reinstalling with the network shut off. It's finding the status somehow, so I need to know what files to delete to stop it from re-applying Premier. Or do I need to turn off plugins until I find the one responsible? There has to be some token either in a file or the windows registry that holds the status. Do I need to reformat my PC to clear this garbage out?

I do wish DAZ would make at least one prior version readily available. Not everyone does the beta, nor do they keep old versions laying around.

All what? Unless you are a Premier subsciber there is no chnage (beyond the free additions adn fixes). If you are a Premier subscriber and don't log in through DS then again there are no changes. Aside from the ability to turn notifications off there are no changes to the application if you do log in, and you don't have to use that. Adding Premier plug-ins and content trequires deliberate action on your part.

How does one remove the login token. Logging out isn't working to revert Studio, so again, I need to know what to delete.

Why is it so difficult to get this premier out of my Studio?
