So does DAZ Studio now have ads integrated into it?!

  • TesseractSpaceTesseractSpace Posts: 1,406

They've had ads for a while now, since 4.22 at least, if not earlier. But it seems you can subscribe to be allowed to turn them off.

How long is a Daz month for Premier or Daz+?

is it only for the month you sign up? or is it like 31 days if you sign up in October?

or is it 28 days no matter what?

or is it something else.... frown

All what? Unless you are a Premier subsciber there is no chnage (beyond the free additions adn fixes). If you are a Premier subscriber and don't log in through DS then again there are no changes. Aside from the ability to turn notifications off there are no changes to the application if you do log in, and you don't have to use that. Adding Premier plug-ins and content trequires deliberate action on your part.

But if you log in you can't ever get it to stop being 'premier' until the subscription runs out. Even uninstalling won't make it go away. Even cutting off the internet to the PC. I really want to know how it can be removed today without fully formatting the PC and reinstalling Windows and everything else.

I re-installed 4.15 for better render times. Genesis 9 still works. Problem solved.

I do wish DAZ would make at least one prior version readily available. Not everyone does the beta, nor do they keep old versions laying around.

I don't know how long it goes between checks. But the notification display is in the same-as-everyone-else state until you change it, even if there are other things that are Premier-specific I would expect they need to be turned on by the end user.

It is from the date of sign up, I think calendar months rather than set number of days but I am not sure on that.

Managed to find the token file and remove it. Set the firewall to block Studio from any internet access so it can't go back to premier. Wonder why nobody would just say which file to delete, as if it's some kind of secret.

Richard, you may want to let Daz know that having the ability to remove ads be a subscription thing comes off very much as creating a problem so they can sell the solution to it. They may not have intended that, but that's how it looks and it is not a good look for them. They've lost a lot of trust with these changes.

File is in C:\users\<whatever user name you're using>\AppData\Roaming\DAZ3D\Studio4 and is named local.dzwb

Removing that file puts it in a logged-out status (make sure you're either offline or have disabled automatic login, or it'll just go right back to being logged in, with all that entails).

I`m asking as a semi prodessional Daz artist.
Am I getting this correct? If I as a comic book creator, used a morph from one of the exclusive characters to create a new character to add to an ongoing comic series, I`d have to keep subscribing every month to keep that character in my storyline?

If so, Premier is not feesible as it would cut into profit from the sales of my comics.

It`s hypothetical because I make my own characters from merchant resources, but just incase ( It doesn`t have to be a character) I wanted to kit bash something like a chair from an interior that was exclusive to Premier membership.

You would be correct.  Once you unsub, no more Premier content.

Worse, according ot the FAQ, if you unsub and then resub, there's no guarantee you'll regain access to the content you lost when you unsubbed (I've bolded the relevant part of the answer to Question #5 about content):

    5. What is the exclusive Premier Only content mentioned on the Premier page that is only available while you have an active Subscription?

    • With each Character Bundle release (2-3 per month) there will be exclusive content that will be auto-added to the accounts of Premier members at that time.  You can keep and use this content for as long as you have an active premier membership.
    • Examples would be Aiko 9 and Dark Elf Shape for Vicky 9.
    • Content that is removed due to letting a Premier subscription lapse is not guaranteed to be available on reinstating the membership at a later time.
    • We currently do not plan to offer Add-on Licenses to the exclusive content. (3D Printing, Interactive etc.)

Wow.  Other sites offerring their 3D assets on a subscription basis make it clear you retain ownership of and the rights to use any content you downloaded before your subscription lapsed.  This makes Premier semi-useless for commercial use.

I'm surprised not to have seen it directly mentioned yet, but this feels like an initial attempt by Daz to add DRM to content.  I've largely given up on Daz for other, somewhat related reasons, but that's what this really feels more like to me - in a poorly thought out manner, I'd add.  The idea that DRM protected material, once purchased properly, may not be able to reactivate after properly resubscribing is...mind-boggling, to me.  Most likely the support staff doesn't know if/how that can be reliably applied, but that - at least in my opinion - should have been a CORE issue to resolve before launching this.  Are customers expected to "buy" the exclusive content again every time you restart a subscription?

"Protecting" content while forcing additional subscription fees I'm sure feels like a "win-win" for the business, until it kills off the customer base.  I'm not saying that will for sure happen, but it's certainly a possibility.  I suppose time alone will tell what this does for Daz.

Oh yes, the exclusives are definitely using the loathsome Connect Encrypted Content DRM they tried forcing on the market years ago. And I recall one of the concerns back then was the idea that something with that DRM could easily be disabled by accident if there were an account glitch. In this case, remote disabling content is an actual feature.

do you think any new limited bundles will be added to the Premier coupon for a free bundle this month, or do they add a couple each month? I'm about to use the coupon just to use it, although there is nothing in this first batch, including the toon Vicky 9 that I want, but free is free. Usually there would be one or two items in a bundle that would be useful, but nothing at all that tweaks my imagination. I have already purchased purchased bits and pieces of the bundles given so far, other than the Tara one. There's a reson I didn;t buy it before

I'd say that unless you're worried you'll forget to use the coupon, best to wait a week and see if anything else drops.

Yeah, it's extremely disappointing to see a base character locked to a subscription, I hope they reconsider and don't do this to base characters going forward. I'm not sure there'd be much point in shopping here if all base characters ended up subscription only. Hopefully they can figure out a better balance for premier extras. If non-subscribers have nothing of value to get here, they'll leave.

So far I don't see enough offerings to be worth the subscription fee. And DAZ Connect killed the deal for me. I thought we'd finally buried DAZ Connect.

I still can't help wonder if this subscription thing is a prelude to DAZ Studio 5.

Do we though? We thought Daz would never bring back Connect encrypted content. But do we actually have an ironclad guarantee they won't change their mind between today and the release of Studio 5.0? Because absent one, neither you or I can say with certainty, and Daz has a history of doubling down on unpopular decisions (the aforementioned Connect Encrypted Content and NFTs come to mind.)

All we know is they didn't remove any from 4.23, and say they don't think they'll remove features in future, but everything I've seen falls far short of an actual guarantee.

Yeah I remember years ago wnen Daz took over Poser Pros and said that all of our purchases would always be available. Then when they shut down Poser Pros I lost all access to to everything that I had purchased there with the exception of a few textures and shaders

I was wondering if DAZ Studio 5 would move to subscription only.

I'm pretty certain that DAZ won't keep DAZ 4.XX around once DAZ Studio 5 is released.

They claim they will, but only time will tell. Of course they won't lift a finger to fix anything for 4.xx once 5.0 is out. That's fairly common, no support for old versions. Hopefully the process of updating things for 5.0 won't leave too many things unusable in 4.xx. obviously any plugins that get updated will be a concern. If for example Ultrascenery 2 gets updated to 5.0, it's unlikely the 4.xx version will remain.

I am satisifed that there is no plan to turn Daz Studio 5 into de jure or de facto rentware. The world being the world, it is of course possible that events will pan out otherwise, but if they do I don't believe it will be down to the working out of cunning plan already set in motion and I will not accept an unqualified "told ya!" from those currently predicting doom.

I doubt there's a cunning plan, more that they're making sure they have the option should they decide to use it. And that if changes like subscription content aren't fought at every turn, it may become more tempting to take that course since customers clearly didn't object enough to stop the earlier changes. Pity there's no better way to give DAZ feedback.

I see there used to be a feedback option in support, but it looks to have been removed, guess they're scared to find out what customers think of Premier.

For some of us, I believe that they'll HAVE to keep some form of DS 4 active, as I, and others, actually purchased DS 4 pro back during the period when it was a pay for item.  If the DS 4 to 5 transition follows the pattern for the transition of the paid version of DS 3 Advanced to DS 4, that would mean it will remain in your library as a manual download item along with the associated items like figure Mixer.  Now, for all those of who got DS 4 Pro as freeware, that's not such a sure thing... but given how many add-ons for DS4 are bound to stop working whenever DS 5 rears it's head, it seems unlikely that they could get away with simply pulling the plug without warning given that they're still happily selling all that product that may be rendered unusable in 5.

...then they bought RDNA and put all their content in the store which made it harder to sift thriugh during sales.

    I also miss Poser Pros.

As to 5 breaking things because of the new SDK, I am rather concerned.  For example I still have  and use GenX and GenX2.  As the PA is gone these likely will not be updated for Daz5. It makes me wonder what other plugins may fall by the wayside as well.

    Hi,

I'm considering upgrading my membership to DAZ Premier. I hope this is the right place to ask a question or two as below.

Sometime in the last few months I renewed my annual DAZ Plus subscription, so that it is paid-up until 2025-11-28, that is, more than a year in advance.

My main question is, if I go to Premier, will I receive an appropriate deduction for what I have prepaid as above? (If not, that wouldn't seem fair.)

If I upgrade via my Personalized Offer, i.e. the Unique Offer web dialog at https://www.daz3d.com/subscription/membership/offer, will I get this deduction automatically, in addition to the free 2 months Premier as per the Offer?

That is, as in the following offer on the web dialog:

    "Your Unique Offer
Upgrade now and get 2 months toward your Premier Subscription!"

    A second question:

At the time when I upgrade my membership, do I have to upgrade my DAZ Studio software at that time? I have an issue, in fact a longstanding ticket one year old now with no answer yet from Technical Support, which prevents me upgrading from DAZ Studio 4.21 until this is resolved. (It's ID 445392, in case you can give the guys a nudge please!) Therefore I will not be able to upgrade the software yet. I hope this is not a problem when upgrading membership.

I hope Richard or someone will be able to answer these things, otherwise I can't proceed with a membership upgrade.

    Thanks,

    Trevor
