Ok you guys. This probably has already been explained before but this thread is soooooo long, please help me out here.

I'm currently not premier and I haven't bought Vicky or Mikey, or any G9 content that costs money.

I have upgraded to the most recent DAZ Studio version and have downloaded all the G9 content that's free.

I vaguely remembe that I'm supposed to have access to a basic male and female G9 toon character, one G9 toon hair, a filament toon lighting set up, and filament toon shaders.
    Or did I misread/misremember that?

I have found the shaders but I can't find any of the other stuff. What am I not getting?

I've played around with the basic toons for a bit, and... I'm gonna have to start investing in G9, don't I? *SIGH*

I do hope that someone will develop a "FilaToon for G8" product with solutions for the eyes and nice skins. PLEASE?!?! PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE!!! crying

I think FilaToon works quite well on G8.

    @AlienRenders & @Artini

Thanks for posting tidbits about what was happening with your renders. I managed to fix what wasn't working with mine.

Except I couldn't add shadows to the model (hence the flat colour). I would've had to have started all over again in order to work out what I did wrong.

No offense - I really mean that - but those results don't convince me. I fiddled around quite a bit today with FilaToon and G8, and I got some ok-ish results... then I loaded the G9 anime character and it instantly looked so much better. It's the eyes and the skin.

Basically what you're looking for are similarly stylised textures for G8, which makes sense. I feel like Sakura 8 will probably FilaToon quite well as she already comes with stylised textures (including appropriate eyelashes).

If you really want to use G8, try using some toon characters? The skins will work a lot better.

    I think I'll experiment...

I mean, G9 is awesome, and the anime characters do a lot of amazing things (the eyes DO look really amazing), but I think there are loads of options for older content.

    Ok, using this:

    Toon Generations 4 Essentials for Genesis 8 Female(s) | Daz 3D

Pretty happy with the result. And there's a fair number of other toon style stuff.

Genesis and Genesis2 content work really well with Filatoon as well
The more I play around and figure things out with Flatoon and Filament in general the more I like it.

Another experiment with the background of dimensions of 2048 x 2048 pixels.

For me it looks ok, so maybe pixelation also depends on the size of the background image.

Here's another illustration style test, this time with 3DA Maryse for G3F, because I wanted to see how well FilaToon handles dark skin. For the eyes, I used https://www.daz3d.com/awesome-anime-eyes-genesis-3-female and after I converted it to FilaToon I selected the Irises only and changed the file in the Base Color back to the Maryse eyes texture, over a color of pure white (255-255-255). The background is https://www.daz3d.com/iray-skies-10-skies-for-use-with-iray with no changes, and I don't see any pixilation at all, even when I render it much larger than I'm attaching here.

    Other things I've learned:

    - Delete all the bump and normal maps from the figures.

    - The FilaToon hair shader gives an ugly gray for the Rim Color. Change that to something that looks better, then play with the Rim Amount, Rim Threshold, and Rim Shadow Strength sliders until I like the way it looks.

Rim is an amazing and easily overlooked parameter.
it needs distant light, but you don't have to use a lot.

      I agree with you.
G8 can also be used with FilaToon, but I want “Genesis 8 Toon”, “Genesis 8.1 Toon” and “Genesis 3 Toon”.

     Convenience varies greatly.

Well, if there's one thing you know about me, it's that I tend not to approach things the same way others do.

    There is a new https://www.daz3d.com/kawaii-dream-lie-makeup-for-genesis-9-toon

but it is listed with only:

    • 16 LIE Presets (.DUF)
    • 01 Daz Studio Iray Shader Presets (.DUF)

so I guess it will not work well with FilaToon.

    Good to know!

  • Yeah, all the default face/body textures for the Genesis 9 Anime base models use LIE presets for things like lips, nipples, blushes, eye creases, etc.

    Thanks and good to know.

Is there anywhere that lists what all the parameters do?

Layered Images get turned into a PNG file in the Temp folder and those are what the renderers get, they don't need to understand layered images themselves.

I'm sorry if this was already asked but can all the KindredArts shaders and lights for Filament work in FilaToon? What about the glass shader? If not, is there a glass shader for FilaToon?

You can use the glass shader in the same scene as FilaToon, but it won't have a toon outline. My Big Boi Bathing render uses the glass shader on the water droplets: https://www.daz3d.com/gallery/user/6736226870624256#gallery=newest&page=1&image=1353125

I think Kindredarts shaders are Iray based so no they won't work in Filament.

Oh, cool idea. I guess you can use the Add Toon Line shader after. I'm surprised it took till now for me to even play with Filament!

I meant the ones specifically for Filament like the glass, and fire and lights products. I'm guessing now they do work, just without an outline.

So I've been playing in Tilt Brush in VR and one a whim I tried to bring in one of my sketches as an FBX. It worked :D
Obviously only the solid brushes without transmaps will work - but its a quick and easy way to get some shapes into DS

Wow! That's fantastic! I will have to try that. I didn't even realize Tilt Brush lets you export in FBX!

Interestingly the glass windows in the https://www.daz3d.com/xi-anime-convenience-store is using a standard iRay glass shader. There is a texture in the Base Color setting to simulate a cartoon window, and a texture in the cutout opacity setting as well.

Here is an image from a comic I am working on, using Streets of Japan 2, Mikey 9 and Vicky 9 with various clothing and hair products used, on the Bellina moped. Found it quite cool how emissives work with the added bloom settiing. I am liking Filatoon a lot it does what I have always wanted, two of the biggest boons is instant renders and not having to worry about postworking.
