Here is my scene so far. I realized I don't have a background through the doors as it was rendering. Also, the cannister she is cutting isn't in its place. I am having trouble getting the light from the torch to do what I want and I would really like the cannisters to have a more MAT look similar to the tanks on the torch cart. There is a lot of helpful info in this thread so I am curious to see what suggestions people have.
Myer: Please let is know if you are rendering in Iray or 3Delight, so we can help you better.
There are lots of elements I like about this scene: The workshop with all the items in it feels real and not staged. The girl's posture is relaxed but business like. Hands are pretty hard to pose and I see her right thumb poised on the trigger. Bring her left thumb down a little and her index finger closed a little more. I can't see her left foot, but it looks to me that it is lined up with her left shoulder and thus displays proper balance for the weight on that foot.
Now for some practicality. I'm not sure if you are trying to portray a standard welding tool or an arc welder. Regardless which one, her goggles should be over her eyes, and this would be imperative for an arc welder, which is damagingly bright. Even if this is a standard torch, the light coming from it will light up her body more than you are portraying here, and an arc welder will light up her and what's behind her. Try Googling some images so you can decide how you want to portray it. You probably don't want to put on an arc welder's helmet, so I would assume you will likely choose a standard torch.
I know she has nice abs, but if she's welding, she'll be burned by sparks coming from the torch. The most practical (and probably the most boring for your render) is an apron, but then we don't get to see her great abs. You will need to decide practicality vs. cute skin. Perhaps a compromise is to put a bodysuit/close-fitting shirt underneath the revealing blouse.
HDRI for ambient, external light, with intensity dropped for a dimmer light.
Some emissive surfaces on the city blocks for environment
Distant light, slight blue tint to convey a sense of loneliness and distance
Emissive surfaces on the wall sconces, warmer tint to convey sense of comfort and luxury
2 spots on the woman, blue tinted, again to convey loneliness and contrast.
From the first glance, I can say the lights are balanced well, the whole scene is great, but if I may suggest to make the city behind the windows more clear if possible, and also reduce the intensity of the lights coming from outside, as I can tell the scene is at night and the room is at a high level of building.
That's some very good advice. I was wondering about the rays of light coming in through the window. If it's night time, what's the source of the light? The buildings outside do seem a little blurry, and clarity will improve them.
This is a story picture rather than a portrait, so I have some questions/suggestions:
The camera angle isn't close enough for me to see what her hands are doing, or any expression on her face. I know it's a big scene and you want to show everything, but sometimes the best story is up close. Your subject is the woman first and the buildings second, that's where the human interest is. You may lose all or part of the second window doing it. I had to make that same decision with my render of the captain and sailor playing chess. I wanted to show a little boat crammed with stuff in the middle of the ocean, but I lost my story too far away.
Her expression, posture and hands will clue us in more of why she is lonely. Is she isolated? Lost a love or separated from him? Homesick for the simple life she left behind for the high society highrise life?
The addition of some furniture will help tell the story. Is this her home or somewhere she is visiting? Perhaps there is a clue about who she is lonely for in a picture on the wall, or maybe in her hand? Her gown tells me that there is some black tie event going on, and she has moved away from the people to this room to gaze out at the city below. Let's bring in more items because I want to know more of her story.

Saphire,
Good start! One observation. It looks like the light is aimed just below his outstretched hand and his head is almost in shadow. You also might want to try adding a light that comes in from the right at a lesser intensity to help fill in some shadows caused by the main light.
Also, think about what you're trying to tell us with the picture and try to use the lighting to help convey the message.
Yup, I agree with TobascoJack. What's the story here? The evidence of steam (do I see Jepe's effects?) tells me that the shower has been running for a while. Is this a steam room in a public gym? Is he a model posing for an underwear ad or did he just finish working out? The addition of more items will tell us what's going on.
The light source is a little confusing for the venue. It looks like the power is out and the room is lit by an emergency lamp on the floor. Move the light source so it looks like it's coming from a ceiling fixture. That can be slightly cool (add a touch of blue) so it looks like a florescent light.
His right arm is very rigid. I suggest you bend the elbow so he looks more casual. Also, why is he looking to the right? Is he talking with someone?
I am using IRay. I am using it as a cutting torch, not a welder, so she is actually scrapping the container. Just so happens that I am a welder myself. ;P The goggles are actually for a G2M while she is G3F so I am having a hard time gettting them to fit on her eyes, They are the only goggles I have though and they at least give the 'look' of industrial labor. I am also limited on clothing. I am mostly using the V7 pro bundle to dress her. So she is wearing the post apocalyptic top with renegade pants and boots.
I have been trying to do emission shader on a primitive but so far I can't get it to glow.
Here is an update where I played with lighting around her because I felt the scene was too dark. There will be sparks added in post render.
Here's my newest version. I moved the sparking wires back some and upped the intencity of the light. I also gave the closest guard some hair. (Just so you know the guard in question is genesis using g3m clothing and hair.)

He is about to step into the shower, but he is real shy as it is his new gf he is turning to talk to I will be adding her partly in the next render, will also be adding some other things in this render as well just wanted to get the feel of what I wanted first.

Well, shoot! Look at me trying to tell a professional welder what it's supposed to look like! The lighting is a lot better. My skills are limited to 3Delight, so I will have to defer to someone who is familiar with Iray.
I haven't worked with G3F, but I do know a trick for trying to get an uncooperative item to fit a figure it was not designed for. I am assuming that autofit won't allow you to move the goggles down over her eyes, or the morphs won't work either. I know that when fitting V4/M4 hair on G1 or G2, sometimes the morphs won't load or that the hair warps. I had this problem with Arki's Dragonbraid on G1, and have used this technique for fitting V3 sunglasses onto G1. It will work for anything that doesn't have to change its shape when the character is posed.
When you load the goggles, don't have G3F selected, and the goggles will load, but be the wrong size and in the wrong position. This will free them to be moved around. Now you need patience to move them and scale them according to X,Y,Z scale. When you are finished, you must parent them manually.
Secondly, I've had a costume where G2F's thighs were bare but I couldn't get the pants to fit the boots under the corset. So I loaded underwear and gave them a leather texture, then I gave that same leather texture right on the skin of her legs. It's the same effect as a second skin, as long as you have clothing to hide the seams. I have even used it for chainmail beneath armor when I was doing some kit-bashing. This probably won't work for your character, as the skin of her chest is showing - so it's showing off abs. ...at least she's not wearing spike heels! =o)
My name is Liana. I am new to Daz or at least using it. I want to learn mostly why I am entering, especially about lighting. I have did some reading and watching utube videos for the last month for daz and Bryce. Not my first render, but my first attempt to do something some what serious and enter a contest to get some good advice. I did the render/scene on a laptop in 3delight on Daz4.9. My desktop is out of commision until I get a motherboard (upgrading) and a new power source (died).
My characters are millenium horse and Genesis2. I did the pose for the horse and girl myself, tendious task that is. I used an outdoor scene. My fav place to be in real life and of course horses too. They are suppose to be just enjoying each other and their surrounding enviroment. I used one camera pose and a distant light to simulate the sun. I did it as a portrait. I think I wrote everything down. Thanks! :)
Very cool renders so far. :) I am trying to read the thread to learn. I have one more scene I have been working on. I might plop it in here also to get some advice. :)
Liana, I am a newbie myself and also using this competition to learn about lights. I know very little about Iray and less about 3Delight. However, I do know something about color palettes. the first thing I notice about your image is an over abundance of cool colors. (Cool as in cold ;)) Her hair is the only splash of warm in the image.
I would try making the distant light either a soft yellow or orange depending on what time of day you are aiming for. Although I also see no shadows in your image so depending on how 3Delight works and based on other images I have seen, it may be better to use point lights for highlights.
Someone more familiar with 3Delight probably has a better solution, but I wanted to mention that a bit of warm colors could go a long way. her hair already stands out to me.
@Dracorn, you have inspired me to try and get her goggles on. :) Btw, the prop is actually named a welding cart despite actually being a cutting torch or "blowtorch" so the confusion is understandable. Your advice was still accurate if it were arc welding though. I will try to post an update tomorrow.
Here is an updated render in 3Delight I used 3 spotlights and 1 Liner point light 1 distant light, and colored the light blue to cool the lights down turned the intencity down to 40% on all them. The lights went out in the middle of wanting his girlfriend to come shower with him and on came the emergency lights.

Hi :) I totally forgot to turn on the shadows. lol I have been doing it for other practice stuff. Brain fart I guess.I was working in Bryce earlier. I am working on adding a spotlight with 'sun' color, etc. When I finish I will post, unless someone else comments on it. :)

Well hello Liana, welcome to the Newbie Contest :D I am new as well, 1st thing I noticed in your render is her left foot is too far into the ground and the horses eyes are really white or are they closed? and I agree that you need some soft shadows and to color the lights a bit yellowish to make it more warmer. Also I tend to agree with Myerz about the cold colors you chose for her outfit they should be warmer and also maybe move her left hand to wrap it the horses neck a bit to make it feel more like she cares about him/her (Horse).

Hello sapphire. For your render, I would suggest an overhead light. Perhaps wall sconces if you have them with linear point lights. Most bathrooms are well lit even in romantic settings. With so much shadows the steam looks like nighttime fog. But also remember steam rises, not sinks.
I think it would help out if you had more light sources. Also I think it would be cute if she was holding the rubber ducky with her current expression but that may be preference.
Saphire, I fixed the foot when I was working on the lights and turning my shadows on. :) I tired the pose you originally mentioned earlier in my creation process. She kept wanting to distort too much, so I quit trying at that point. I think the laptop was whining about it. I have one other scene that posing seems to be a huge issue and the laptop really protests. That is another story. I did manage to get the pose I actually wanted now. :)
Clothes colors I can not do much about until I get a hang of the uvmaps on here and changing stuff. I have done a little bit of playing. That is my next project. :) It is the original colors for the outfit, which is more midevil type anyways. Just working with what I have. :)
Thanks for the input! :)
Here is my updated version with my goofs fixed and some additional changes.

Hi Liana, you've did good work for your first post, it reminded me of my first post I did on April last year and it was about the relation between humans and horses,
I think the comments you've received will cover all what I intended to advise you, I'll wait until you post next render and see.
NOTE: I'd advise you to hide the cloth If you'r laptop slow down while you'r posing the character.
I have been working on this for ten days now trying to get the surfaces and lights working well together. Not to sure about the character though, I am hopeless at posing, tend to ruin everything when I try to make changes.

This nice and great, in addition to Myerz somments, I'd suggest if you can reduce the steam spread to only the shower curtain and raise it at the upper part, another thing is the lady feet I thing it over tensed (unless she's walking on cold ground ).
maybe if you add a sink near the mirror corner or towel hanger, it'd be nice.

Hi Rufuslong, maybe if you explain what's your problem with posing we can give you some advises ?

Thats a cool render. What mist is that? I must have it. I feel you frustration, I am not sure at this point if I am messing my scene up or improving it. I'll see from the feedback for my next test render.
I don't see anything wrong with yours other than the pose. The lighting looks good to me though. as for the pose, I would go more soldier stance somehow. Like she is ready for a fight in the hallway. Or a sexy or bored pose. She seems really stiff almost like an advertisement for the armor. But like I said, that isn't a lighting issue though.
Here is my latest (and probably last) render. I played with some lights but ended up reverting back to this setting. I am happiest about getting the goggles on thanks to your advic e Dracorn. Hopefully I can make her pop in the post work.
Added furniture. And a cat. It's always good to have a cat.
Added some ground prop and moved the city back as I was looking to show distance instead of height.
From a lighting perspective, I removed the distant light seeing that it's night time (in my original I was thinking of it being late afternoon, but night makes more sense). There's a blue mesh light aimed at the ground prop for color contrast between the room and the distant city. The City's emissive lights were bumped up to draw attention to it as a place of interest/desire for the woman. Added a cube with SSS on over the city to simulate nighttime light haze, and finally added a third spot on the woman for fill.

DS 4.9, Iray.
No postwork.
The sconces are too bright. They are drawing my attention away for the woman, and I had to look close for the cat.
That said... I like the image. The composition is nice, the textures are nice...but... the primary lighting is not there. Bring down the sconces.. Bright UP the spotlights on your actor.
Here is an update for now. I have a few things to do. I forgot to do a few things and fixed that I hope. I need a "reminder list' for what to do or shut off. :)

Excellent points, evilded. I upped the exposure but forgot to turn the intensity down on the sconces.

The lights went out in the middle of wanting his girlfriend to come shower with him and on came the emergency lights.
Titled: Come Shower With Me Sexy

Thanks for the advice. :)
Entitled "State Secrets"
Comments welcome!
Here is my latest (and probably last) render. I played with some lights but ended up reverting back to this setting. I am happiest about getting the goggles on thanks to your advic e Dracorn. Hopefully I can make her pop in the post work.
Updated based on suggestions.
Worlds Apart
DS 4.9, Iray.
No postwork.
I really like it. I think it is cool. :)
The sconces are too bright. They are drawing my attention away for the woman, and I had to look close for the cat.
That said... I like the image. The composition is nice, the textures are nice...but... the primary lighting is not there. Bring down the sconces.. Bright UP the spotlights on your actor.
Getting closer :).
Here is an update for now. I have a few things to do. I forgot to do a few things and fixed that I hope. I need a "reminder list' for what to do or shut off. :)
Nice start Fyre. Is that M4 that you're using?
Excellent points, evilded. I upped the exposure but forgot to turn the intensity down on the sconces.
