Thanks for the comments. Here's a quick and dirty render to show where I'm going. Still needs a couple more props and postwork.
Now that it has a window, I'm wondering if I can do something with that.
A rim light over his left shoulder coming from the window would outline him. It is still very dark. Try putting a pointlight in front of his face and turning it way down - just enough to bring out his features a little. Or the reflected light off a plane out of view may achieve a softer, more desireable effect.
how do you get large objects to render in Carerra without it crashing.
Do you mean objects with millions of polygons,. or just a physically large object,. like a 20mile by 20 mile terrain ?
Carrara shouildn't crash under either of those situations,. but highly detailed objects can slow things down.
and trying to do too many things at the same time can cause any program to crash.
If you're importing the Terragen terrain as an OBJ,. then it could be high polygon,. more than needed,
Carrara has it's own Terrain editor and a set of environmental / terrain shaders. using one of these instead of importing a high poly object would be simpler and more efficient.
In Carrara,. you have a choice of scene scale,. Large,. Medium,. Small
Large is for massive landscape / seascape etc,.(human scaled figures will look like ants)
Medium is for Human scaled scenes,. which can be a city with buildings etc (you can still add a 20 mile by 20 mile terrain,. or a diamond ring)
small is ideal for Product promos / jewelery etc. (human scaled figures will look like giants)
You could try starting out with a Large scale scene,. but,. again,. i'm not sure what you mean by large object
Iray render...had to let it cook overnight. Maybe 10 hours. Made it smaller so it wouldn't take a couple days...
How can you tell if it's running on CPU, GPU or both? I have it set to both (I think) but from what I understand, it can kick out of GPU, and just render using CPU only, which is a lot slower. Is there a way to tell the difference after the fact?
Anyway, this render is kind of a follow up to one I did last summer using the same characters, but in a different scene. The big ugly guy liked the girl, and didn't appreciate the vampire showing her so much attention. Interesting way of eliminating the competition, huh? Let's just drag him into the light!

That's a cool backstory. Like what you're doing with the light!
Holeee crap. A render like this makes me wonder why I bother. Great render.
It is great! Ireally like it, but a person never knows. In the end I am learning something by being involved. :)
I like everyone's attempts in making things. I am not in the position to give advice except maybe with some texturing ideas. I will admire at least everyone's efforts. LOL
I'm getting close to a final version. I'm particularly wondering if adding the gun is over the top.
It might just be me but everything looks as if it is floating above the table, there are no shadows around the items to ground them.
Good point. The shadows would be falling away from the central, overhead light, so no shadow on the gun and ashtray makes sense, but there should be a shadow on the glass. I'm also bothered by the lack of shadow under the table in back.
I thought the renderer was supposed to handle that, but I may have to add them in postwork.
Have you tried selecting the table amd moving it up to make sure everything is sitting on the surface? There should be some shadow under his arched hand on the table and the folder.

Yes, they're all sitting on the table. (The bottom of the ashtray is actually IN the table slightly.) His hand, fingers, and the envelope all have shadows as they should.
The glass is transparent, so I'm wondering if that's a factor. It should still cast SOME shadow, though.
OK this should be my final render with postwork for Bishop Takes Queen. Got a party to host tomorrow so I'm going to sleep on it before I post it.

Fyreheart, Llynara, Liama: Thank you so much for your compliments, I really appreciate them.
But please DO bother. This forum is a fabulous place to learn, and I have already learned so much - I didn't think my renders were so hot when I started. This is, by far, my best render, and there is still so much I want to learn.
I believe this forum is most valuable for the feedback and the contest is just incentive. So enter again and again, and watch you work improve.

You're welcome. :) I did enter my render I was working on. I have one more I will throw in here just for learning purposes, since I am concentrating more on lights than anything else right now. I did start my on art thread, but it will be a willy nilly of different things I am working on. :)
Time for me to take my first image again. I wasn't really satisfied with it, so I changed quite a few things.
I switched positions on camera of the two fencers, changed their poses for a more dynamic ones and increased the overall luminosity of the scene.
There are a few things I would like to improve; things like the hands grip on the saber, the reflections on her hair and maybe rotate the scenario to avoid those pillars behind him. But it's a 10+ hours render and I would like to get your opinions and feedback first if you would be so kind. Thanks in advance!
Sometimes what I do when I want a slightly different camer angle is to load another camera. That way I can keep the original view and play around with different looks, go back and forth and try to figure out which one I like the best.
Something else to keep in mind is to try not to cut off small bits of a figure. Currently you have the edge of the image cutting off part of your bad guy's right foot.
A well done image that just needs a bit of tweaking.
I'm getting close to a final version. I'm particularly wondering if adding the gun is over the top.
If I remember correctly this is supposed to be a clandestine meeting? Perhaps putting the gun closer to the guys body like he is keeping it close but not obvious?

That is an effective solution.
It appears that the vampire's feet are off the ground. If I were him I would be digging my heels in with all the strength I had to avoid that light.
Ok.. I had talked about this one. I completely started from scratch. I scrapped my original and created a new one. Instead of using V7 I opted for a gen2 figure. I posed her and the chair alone (used different chair), then added the rest of my scene. It took me a while and an Ah ha moment. I think I am close.
I have one distant light by the window for supossedly simulated sunlight a light yellow coming through the shades.
One linear point light to act as the ceiling lamp used a cool light blue light.
One spotlight to put emphasis on her more using a light yellow also.
It is done in 3Delight. No postwork. I did some texture changing (I like to practice), and practiced making poses again.

The gun is definitely not over the top! It adds more cloak and dagger drama. This is getting much better. The addition of the light on one side brings depth to your character, even in the dark.
You might want to consider putting the light on the other side - the same side as the lamp with the person in the back. There is no light source coming from the left and it doesn't seem logical to have a light shining from that direction.

There seems to be a very bright light right behind your girl, and she looks like she is so ready to run out of that room her expression says it all like she does not want to be sitting in that chair. :D

Hi, Liana. I'm glad you found a skirt that dipped between her legs and avoided an awkward angle!
The light blending has got a nice color, but you need one more light (a fill light) to make it more natural. There is more than one way of doing this.
You can add Uber Environment 2. This creates a great ambient light - I typically use Occlusion with Soft Shadows. UE2 will slow down the render some, so it depends on the power of your machine if you want to use it.
You could add another distant light with no shadows at all. This works with point lights and linear point lights - bring in some of them until you have the effect you want. You can always turn off their visibility in the scene tab as you experiment. They will render faster than UE2. As always, adjust your other lights to compensate.
Some environments come with lighting which the PA's or DAZ 3D will create just for them. Some characters and even hair will come with these lights. These are great examples to learn from.
Fyreheart- I like the gun! I think it compliments what's already going on.
Liana- I would move the camera angle to the right more, so her gaze is looking more at the camera. Also, her top blends in with the chair she's sitting in. I'd make it a different color, something contrasting to make it pop more. You have a lot of browns and dark reds here. Maybe go for a blue or yellow top. Could be the same hue- a gold would look very nice.
Here's one more I might enter (need to decide soon!) This is Elroy Brown, the villain of my book series. His mother tried to name him "Leroy" (after the song, "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown") but was drunk when he was born and screwed up his name. He's been pissed off ever since. The title of this render is "Not For Long".
There seems to be a very bright light right behind your girl, and she looks like she is so ready to run out of that room her expression says it all like she does not want to be sitting in that chair. :D
Yea, the bright light is coming from the window distant light. I have been thinking about that some.
It does seem she is in a hurry to get on with it all. I have no story except the 4 vases thingy for a fun contest. She is probably thinking woman are you done using me as a guinea pig in your learning? I have not got that comfy pose thing figured out quit yet. The more I practice the more I am getting the hang of posing. :)

The shorts I believe were made for genesis so if they had morphs they went out the window when I fitted them to gen2. lol I have been trying to get all the morphs for every generation. My genesis is missing facial expressions right now, but gen2 I have them all. That is who I am working with the most atm. :)
I have a few suggestions now, including yours to work with and a bunch more ideas floating around in my head. I am going to give them all a try and save separately so I can compare.
You know I finally thought, "Why didn't I think about turning off all the lights and working with them one at a time." I had seen it in a video I watched. So, yea to get to this point I had done that. A duh on my part! lol
I will check out my hair more closely and see if it has lights. I am not sure if the environment does. I will look though. I know the parts of the scene come in 3delight and Iray. I don't have any characters (ones I bought) that I am aware of anyways, so probably no lights there. Good to remind me though I need sticky notes on my forehead. :D
I have learned lots doing this and greatly appreciated all suggestions. I will post my fav finished render here from my experimenting when done. :)

need to remember the more lights you add you may need to dial down the intensity of the already existing lights, to not flood the area with too much lighting

Thanks Kismet!
I adjusted the foot position and the fall of the coat. Now it looks like he's sitting on a pillow or something...
Much better. Now he looks like he's doing everything he can to avoid being dragged into the light...and losing.
Made a few changes last night. I think that I'm about there, but like usual I have no idea for a title...
I like the facial expression. It suggests he's trying to suppress his insanity.
