Was that your own photo you took? If so did you take it with a digital camera or scan a photograph taken with an SLR camera? Nice job combining... I see dem flaws. :)
Consider me the wide-eyed novice alongside wgdjohn's experienced critic (good thing to have!). I can see flaws when they're pointed out, but I'm still at the point of being seriously in awe of work being done by people with backgrounds in photography and art. The beach scene looks darn good to me. I'm happy to get something that doesn't look like a creepy doll or a high school collage cut out of magazines :D!
No, that photo and the render were included with the tutorial. However, when I take pictures, I mostly use my phone or my kindle to take pictures. I just got a new kindle with a camera last Black Friday and it actually takes really good pictures. It was a great, hard to resist low price. I, also, have a Panasonic Lumix digital camera that does pretty good at taking pictures, too, and I use that quite often. I used to have an slr camera, but went digital and never really looked back. I would love getting a digital slr but those are costly and I do fairly well with the equipment I have.
I'm definitely going to have to practice more but not bad for a first effort. I'll be rendering out a few of my own scenes with the idea of combining some stock images or my own pictures so I'll post those experiments as I do them.
The first thing I would say is do most of the prep in Studio so that you get the lighting on the objects to match the lighting on the photograph. Doing it that way reduces the amount of post work needed.
Here are a few of my own pictures with 3D elements added, no post work and they could do with being re-rendered now that I know a bit more about how the lighting works in Iray.

Very nice pictures. I have a hard time telling where your picture and render meet. Yeah, that is something I'll definitely have to think about. It would probably help if I have a background photo in mind before I render out a set. Since I was working on images provided, that option wasn't available for this experiment. It does make me think how to get colors and lighting to match. Overall, I'm glad I picked up the tutorial. At least, now I know what is involved and as you say, it would definitely pay to be able to do most of the setup in DS to match the lighting. There are just times when I can't get the look I'm going for all inside DS so knowing how to do this will help broaden my skills. :)
Although not necessary for either the pictured you or fishtales posted (they look great as is), one little trick to softening the render meets photo issue is to put a texture or two over the whole thing, pulling it together. A wash of color (set to softlight for example) can also do the trick sometimes.
Only if you go into the shader bricks. You can't do it in the sliders on the surface. They are very different from each other in that respect
Sonja, Studio has shader bricks? I never got past adjusting slider settings there.

Ya somewhere lol. Not something I have really explored but they look like they are very much like the ones in Carrara, but more complicated? I'm at work so can't really look right now.
New Gimp Tutorial!!! Here I show you one way to color a brush stamp in Gimp. It's fairly easy and you can get some cool effects. Let me know if anything isn't clear in the tutorial.

@Diomede No problem. Doing the tutorials actually helps to cement into my head how to do things and, if I forget, I know where to look for the answer. :)
Next up will be how to create your own palettes and gradients. They are fairly easy so shouldn't take too long to do tutorials on so that is coming up this week. Then, after that, I still have some tools to do tutorials showing how to use them.
@Knittingmommy : Using the Gradient Tool to colorize brush stamps did not come to my mind until you showed us, thanks again! Looking forward to the tutorials you are planning already.

I've been busy writing among other things. I did manage to do a render of one of my newest characters. Her name is Kerri and she is a space salvage expert in one of my science fiction romance short stories. It was fun trying to create the character I saw in my head and actually see her come 'alive' in DS. She was a fun character to write about. I needed a break from my books so a short story was just the key. It's now in the editing and revision stage which shouldn't take long as it is only about 10,000 words long.
She was in a bar fight just before the story opens which is why I have her all beaten up. She didn't start the fight but she sure finished it. She never seeks out trouble but it always seems to find her and she doesn't back down unless she's sure she can't win. She likes being on her own for long stretches of time and doesn't think she needs anyone. She isn't a people person. Well, until he enters her life. Now, she's wondering if she can live without him.

Forgot to mention this was the first time I used the new Iray Ghost Lights Kit 2. @KindredArts has another winner. I love it! I don't think I ever would have thought of doing some of the things this things does. It's amazing. I used the modbox in this one for the different colored lights and also had a ghost plane from Iray Ghost Light Kit. I just needed a little something more to brighten up the Spaceship Crew Room. I converted it to Iray and it was really dark. I love Ghost lights! :) They worked really well in my Kerri render.
Edit: Okay, I have no idea why the little '@' symbol thing isn't working. Hopefully, KA still reads my little thread.
I wanted to play with the RealFit String Bikini that I got awhile back. I love the morphs that come with it. I converted the Indoor Pool Room to Iray and, while it went really nicely, the lights were messed up. 3Delight lights just don't always convert well to Iray. It isn't always a simple matter of turning on Photometrics. I'll have to go in and manually fix all of the lights. I have some Iray lights that will work well in there. Until then, though, I used Iray Ghost Lights to brighten things up. I love those things, so quick and easy to use. I tried something new and used the iRadiance - HDRI Variety Pack One for the background outside the windows. They worked really well and I didn't have any geometry outside the window to slow things down. If you do this, remember to turn the draw ground to off.
This is Holly. She isn't a character for one of my stories yet. That might change in the future. I just wanted to play around with Skin Builder 3 again and I like doing my own characters when I do that. Holly is dial-spun with a mix of a few characters that I have. I like how she turned out. The skin was made with Skin Builder 3. I think I'll have to try making a skin specifically for a G3M in mind and use the transfer utility to put on a G3M and see how that goes.

I'm working on a render with Creech in it. I was so excited to see him in the store yesterday! Finally, I can embrace my love of old black and white B movies. ;) Render coming soon.
I love Creech but he has exhausted me! I couldn't quite get the render to look the way I wanted. Admittedly, it wasn't Creech's fault. It was the stupid grass in front. At any rate, I ended up rendering Creech 3 times, two of those I let go to a full render at about 15 hours each. I finally ended up render Creech without the grass and then rendering the grass separately. I needed to render them each with their own tone mapping because the tone mapping that was perfect for Creech made the grass flourescent. The tone mapping perfect for the grass just washed Creech out too much. I almost gave up but I think I came close to something I like. Now, I give up with this one. It is what it is and I'm not rendering it again. Still, I love Creech Revolution Male by @Greybro. I'll have to see what I can do about the female soon.

@Greybro You're welcome. No, it's Nature - Swamp by Andrey Pestryakov. I think I actually forgot to convert that from 3Delight to Iray because it looked so good already I totally forgot. I might have to see what it looks like converted to Iray. I really need to see if I can do a better image with Creech. This one isn't exactly how I wanted it. He's a great character, though. I'm just a little inept it seems. :)

I wasn't sure how to describe exactly what I was seeing. It feels like someone is watching him from behind the grass basically. I like it.
When I was working on the image, I kept thinking he would be great as a misunderstood shifter and the camera was kind of my heroine's perspective as she hid from him, viewing him from the behind the grasses. I haven't quite worked out the plot, yet. Right now it's just a glimmer of an idea I've put in my writer's notebook along with the picture and a brief paragraph with what ideas I do have for it.
Sorry I haven't been around much the last week. Just been really busy. I did manage to finish up a render using Creech Evolution for Genesis 3 Female. I love this product. I played around with mixing a few other characters in the female with Creech Evolution dialed in at 51% on the head mixed with a few other characters and the Creech Evolution body dialed in at 58% Such a nice mix. The morphs play really well with other figures.
By the way, if you don't already know about it, @Greybro and Sixus1 Media are having a little render contest that ends tonight so if you happen to have a render that meets the requirements head over the Greybro's PA thread where you can read all about it. If I did that link correctly, it should take you straight to the post where the contest was mentioned. I didn't realize there was a contest happening. I just happened to go over there to get caught up on the thread.

I've been busy but I did have a chance to play with the new Victoria 8. I really like her. Here is my first render using her with Voss Hair and Lingerie Robe Set. I didn't do any messing around with the settings so this is a straight up render with just a little bit of post in Gimp. I love her hand and feet and how detailed the neck area is. I think whoever modeled her did a stellar job. I played around with the new template for the expressions in Power Pose and I have to say that I like how it works. It did a great job and this is the best expression I've ever managed to get on my own. The rigging on her face is fantastic.
