...love it. Shows there is still lots of llfe in the old generation figures.
There certainly is, and in my case -- neither a Poser nor a DS4 owner -- the older figures are my only option. I'm fine with it because, in all honestly, I'm only now starting to work with all the extra morph sets I'd bought, including a whole bunch of Capasces sets. I have Freak4 and SheFreak4, and never once loaded them up (not really into hugely muscular or monster figures, I guess) I think I used The Girl 4 once, in her default state, and that was just because I needed a companion for Tate's The Dude.
here's a real stretch (NAE), a fusion of Sadie and Aiko3 I did back in 2009 in Daz 2.3 (long before there was even a figure mixer). Again the settings for this were lost on the old HD that died. Of course this would be a "easy as cake" today with Genesis.
Cute! I keep meaning to try and put Cookie's head on Aiko4's body, but I have so many projects going on at once that I'm easily distracted.
I’ve decided not to enter the contest, so here’s the formula for Taffy. I created 3 different bodies. Image 1 is Body 1, image 2 is Body 2, and image 3 is Body 3. As always pinup poses by me.
Hopefully you recognize the person I'm trying to re-create, but just in case, it's Edgar Allan Poe.
Poe has such a wonderful, skewy face. That's a good likeness. His upper head could stand to be a bit more...bulbous? Not sure if that's the right word, but he has a a high, wide, and round-looking forehead. -- though the hair you're using might be hiding your Poe's forehead shape.
I'm thinking his eyes are going to be the hardest part of his features to replicate. If you can find a texture that has slightly darker skin around/under the eyes, that would probably help a lot.
He does have a skewy, assymetrical face, and oddly a lot of the images of him on the Internet appear to be mirror images...but I'm not entirely sure which ones are correct. The upper head did need to be larger and more bulbous as you suggested--I used a couple of Creature Creator morphs (Alien Scalp and Frankenstein) at low values and am pleased with the result (though I might need to dial them up a bit higher).
Although I thought the D5 skin I was using looked pretty good, I experimented with a few alternatives. Doyle turned out pretty well also, I think.
The images below feature the following skin textures: David 5, Doyle for M5 and M4, M4 Elite Sol, Stefan for M4 and Genesis, and Elite Phillip (M5). All have the same morph formula and no lights.
Thanks, mmalbert, and others who commented on him!
Fine, go ahead make us Genesis users jealous by showing something that Genesis has never been able to do very well*: become a mermaid complete with traditional tail.** :-P (sticks-out-tongue) ;-) (winks) Though, from what I hear, we won't have to wait too much longer.
She's beautiful (well, in her own way, that is), and I love the attention to detail you put into your renders. For instance, you could have used any standard M4, but instead you customized him too, and he looks great. Excellent work--thank you so much for sharing it!
*At least not that I've seen.
**I should say that these fine characters deserve mention, despite not having the fish tail: From the Deep | Killer Shark | Kuril | Sirena | Sirano (and I might be forgetting some)

Nice to see that pic again, I remember it from the old forum. My first reaction was "That's possible???"
Thanks for sharing all those characters, greycat! I like all of them, but wanted to mention a few in particular. Your SF5 turned out very nicely, and has a simple, elegant formula. And your giant looks great too...like a villainous henchman from a kid's cartoon (not so much realistic, but believable within the proper context).
Including three bodies with Taffy was a nice touch. They all look good, but my favorite render of the bunch is the one where she's lying back with her left leg up in the air.
A quick tip on portraits- you can always print out a picture of the person (let's say an 8 x 10) then draw lines 2" apart down the page, and 2" across the bottom. See where the eyes are, the tip of the nose, the upper lip and bottom lip touching- and the tip of the chin. Then print out your render and see if you have those things at the right height. Then you do the horizontal with where the eyes start and end, where each nostril starts (as you go from left to right), and the same with the mouth (going left to right.) That will help you line up what goes where. Portrait artists working in oil and acrylic do this all the time.
I'm excited to be able to post something for this. This will be my first entry, I'm not sure if this is a work in progress... or if I've finished it. Going to go ahead and post it here, while I think about it for another little bit.
The character is inspired by Felurian, the immortal woman from Patrick Rothfuss's book The Wise Man's Fear, whose song and great beauty lure men to pursue her to her forest bed, where they eventually go mad or die...
Trying for realistic and striking beauty in human terms, with a small suggestion of otherworldliness and threat.
Also, I should say that it is my understanding that the image complies with the nudity constraints in both forum TOS and contest rules, and it is not my intention to offend anyone or make anyone uncomfortable, but if anyone does feel that way, I will remove it.

That works. Another way, since these are digital portraits, is to overlay a screenshot of the render in front view and profile over similar photographs using a photo editing program. Using 1:1 scaling and decent transparency, you can generally use the irises to line everything else up. It helps a lot to have most of the work done first though, at least in my experience, as that way you can use more correct shapes.
I've been making portraits my whole life, and usually eyeball proportions, but I know what I tend to get wrong proportion-wise, and this method helps me get the last bits in their proper places.
Here's another view (edit: now two other views :) ) of the character I posted above. These are straight renders without postwork except for the background, where she is out from under the cover of her moonlit forest. (The main image above does have some post in Pixelmator, although very little on the figure herself.)
Murgatroyd, I adore your character. She's full of beans, no doubt! I don't know if the nose isn't a little bit too small, but since it's toon, then everything's allowed, I assume. Zawarkal, your monster is... well, monstrous :-P. A great addition to any Lovecraft-styled renders. The missing parts just make it creepier, if I were you, I wouldn't fix that. Greycat, I don't think your Taffy would be able to stand like this, but nevertheless it's a nice, retro-styled character. Your amazon reminds me of Rhulana from Drakensang, I'm not sure if you recognize the title. Her quotes were outstanding :-D. I'd try to make the shoulders and thighs a bit less bulgy (it's quite difficult for a woman to achieve such an effect in real life). And if you can, dress her in Athlantya dress (I hope the name is correct). When it comes to SheFreak 5, well... I'm definitely not into sexy renders, so the outfit you chose doesn't appeal to me. Maybe Zareb garments would be fitting, I don't have them, so I cannot see myself. Storypilot, your Ferulian is stunning. She has such an eerie, threatening aura, if I may say so. I always wanted to get such body without ending up with Faerie head (the one from Creature Creator Bundle). Anyone knows how to achieve similar results? I just don't want the head, only her body :-). I'd try dressing her in an asymmetrical dress, maybe in an animal pattern of some sort.
I just wanted to end saying all the entries are so fine I'd very happy to be a part of the competition, it helps me to learn a lot. I'm also posting a quote from my entry.
I am very honoured to present my first set of characters for DAZ Studio's Genesis: Nyiramachabelli. The name of the set derives from Rwandese language, meaning "the woman that lives alone on the mountain" - the nickname the Rwandan called Dian Fossey, the prominent primatologist and one of so-called "Leakey's Angels" who devoted her life to preservation and studying of mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei). I highly doubt there's anybody who doesn't recognize this great figure of modern science, but in case it happens, I copied some links that should be helpful. I chose to recreate her look, because I am very keen on primates myself and I love Gorilla for Genesis package. However, all the photographs I was able to find of her were of very poor quality and therefore I decided to recreate how Sigourney Weaver looked when she played Fossey in "Gorillas in the Mist", the famous documentary based off Fossey's book.
I focused on mimicking Fossey-Weaver's face. The photographs I used for references are avalaible here, here and here.
This character was done with various Resource Kits for Genesis, Young Teens 5 and Stephanie 4 for Genesis as well as Genesis Evolution Morph Bundle. I cannot texture, though I'd like to learn how to do it, so I used V5 Elite Texture Valerie. However, for the eyes, Andrea for YT5 came in handy (her eyes are beautiful). As for the clothes, I dressed the character in Octavius' shirt and pants, the boots from Forest Scout and Dragonlord's bracers. I had a problem with the hairstyle, though. I do not have a proper one, for example Tears Hair for Genesis. Therefore I used Loreley Hair, which I find very difficult to pose.
Despite this fact, I had a lot of fun working on this piece in DAZ Studio 4.5 - I want to try out all the improvements DS 4.6 has to offer as soon as I can. I wonder if there will be some nice shaders to use on my gorillas? Speaking of them, I find it really disturbing that DAZ doesn't have any decent primates on offer - despite Gorilla for Genesis. I mean, Silverkey3D's Monkey (which is a macaque, after all!) is okay, but is gets a bit too cartoony at times, whereas Millennium Chimpanzee and Millennium Gorilla just don't stand the times. I really hope they'll improve on this matter, but meanwhile, I had to help myself without it. Gorilla for Genesis is one of my favourite packages, but there's one thing I find tricky: it shows a mature male gorilla - and I wanted kids. Especially the head's shape was tough, female gorillas have them smoother, less egg-shaped. This is how I came up with my gorillas - Cookie, Mekombo, Digit and Binky, which, apart from Digit, are all custom morphs as follows...
Digit, Fossey's favourite, is a pure Gorilla for Genesis (1.00), I didn't do anything on this figure. As for the little gorillas (from left to right):
- Mekombo and Binky:
Gorilla for Genesis 1.00
Basic Child 1.00
Baby AT 0.10
- Cookie:
Gorilla for Genesis 1.00
Basic Child 1.00
What I did to recreate the protagonist of "Gorillas in the Mist" starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey:
Basic Female 1.00
S4 1.00
Girl Face 1 0.56
Eyes Shape 1 0.26
Mouth Area Wider 1.00
Nose Narrow Long 0.29
Eyes Open More 0.13
Narrow Nostrils -0.26
Cheekbones 0.55
Eyes Large 0.21
Mouth Width 0.45
Nose Height 0.13
BF Combo Teen Body 0.22
BF Hip Small 1.00
All expressions come from Expressive for Genesis package. To speed up the rendering process, I rendered each character that appears on the picture separately. Moreover, props' renders - probably mostly of different Lisa's Botanicals and Cyclorama textures - have been provided courtesy of wonderful stock providers I have the pleasure to collaborate with, as follows:
background by Olbor62
grass by Sofie73 (retired)
rock by Zememz (semi-retired: in storage, contact possible)
plants by BeilArt (retired, however, they have a new page at ArtFire)
Only Sofie73's stock is not a render, but a hand-painted resource instead. All of the stocks were licensed for non-commercial AND commercial use. For evaluation purposes, I'm attaching my raw renders too, I only used MS Paint to paste gorillas' pictures alongside with their names to recognize morphs easily - so that I didn't have to attach more than five attachments (you can see Mekombo and Cookie appear on the same image). The first from the left picture is the real entry, the rest being the raw morph promos.
I made my first purchase through DAZ store in October 2012, so I consider myself a new user and, above all, a beginner. I hope the contest will serve as a place for learning the ropes of morph creating, so any kind of advice is greatly appreciated.
And here comes my second probably-soon-to-be entry. Say hello to Molly, a slightly younger teen girl with an A3-like face. I tried to mimic how A3 realistic looks like, therefore I focused on her face only. As the base, I used YT5 with Andrea custom character (I also took UberEnvironment lights from this set). Then I started to sculpt Molly's face to be less teen-like. I took advantage of Genesis Resource Kits mainly. It's also my first attempt at shaders also known as colours. I changed the look of Casual Afternoon clothes and that lovely bracelet from Summer Dress. I don't know if the character qualifies for the competition, but nevertheless I'm going to use it in future renders as it meets my needs perfectly.
Facial dials:
mouth corners up 1.00
mouth shape 1.00
narrow nostrils 1.00
short nose 0.87
eyes open more 0.32
I want to thank everyone for the comments to my image. I know I wasn't happy with the skin. Icky is just the right word. Maybe the pwsurface2 shader for monstrous skin would help. Leaving the chest unfxed??? not sure on this one, will revisit... now if I put a body in the cage, maybe... image probably needs better pov
for now I am trying to get other images completed and not sure how my time is going
I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to enter her, but I've recently been working on a toon kid who would definitely qualify. So far, she uses morphs from Toon Amy, Satsuki, Hitomi, Kimberly, Justin, Evolution, Genesis Base, AMR's Proportions, DieTrying's 182 V4 Morphs for Genesis, and several of Thorne's Head and Body Morph Resource Kits.
Looks great--a unique character, but she wouldn't look out-of-place among the 3D Universe cast. Everything seems to fit together nicely.

Yeah, I think the character's shape is plenty "icky" and what improvements could be made in that regard could happen in the areas of materials and lighting. I'm not sure how the biomechanics of that head (or those heads) would work, but that's not really important for the purposes of the contest!
The multiple-heads thing is something that I've seen a few people try, but your take on it is certainly unique.
As far as "the good, the bad, and the ugly" is concerned, I think it's good that you've made such a wonderfully bad, ugly character! ;-) (wink)
Cecilia, I'm looking forward to sharing some feedback on your first project. Did you see my post and chohole's asking if it's okay to move your entry from the entries thread to this one? (Or, since you've posted the images here now yourself, can you manually remove the images from your post in the entries thread?)
Thank you Cecilia. You can definitely achieve that sort of body without a Faerie-looking head. Here's a quick formula of body morphs adapted from key parts I used for Felurian that should leave the head alone for whatever you like. These are all from evolution morphs, and hopefully it could work as a starting point.
Left Foot Propagating Scale -26.5%
Right Foot Propagating Scale -26.5%

Bascially, as you can see, the overall effect is generally lengthening and slimming (the waist area being the exception). These morphs DON'T add any female/male features, so you would want to mix in some female base shapes to suit you. I had a a mixture of several female shapes, including Mavka at 0.10 to further help the lengthening & slimming, but I had Mavka's head morph dialed back to -0.10 to cancel it from ballooning out the head. The first grouping in my original post shows the main female body morphs I used. Hope that helps! ;)
Also your Gorillas in the Mist scene is coming together nicely :)
Scott I've been going back through looking at your Poe character - he is really great. He makes such a good challenge to attempt, he has such a distinctive face. I think I agree that the D5 skin or Doyle looks the best. Need to see Doyle version in the kind of light you have in your original post.
Did I miss a post stating what DAZ is contributing? I think they have had more than enough time to figure out and tell the participants exactly what they are competing for. Glad they decided to participate BUT exactly how are they?? (And I'm not entering, I'm a sponsor, so it doesn't affect me.)
Not sure how happy I am with the character yet... this is close to what I'm going for, but I'm still trying to get a few of his features looking a bit more, err, crisply saggy if that makes any sense. Well defined saggy. ;)
I have Strigoi, Zev0's aging morphs, evolution morphs, some proportion morphs, as well as some basic child in the mix here.
Have to ask.. and it's probably a stupid question... but when saving Aldrak, I have so far saved him as scene subset... I have a feeling I should probably save him as something else... not sure if it should be as character or shaping preset though?
And if I do save him as either of those, can I still do these small finetunings I am doing now and than?
Oh and a little picture with him I was doing the other day... named it Early Morning Tea as I had the thought of him recently having woken up, having gotten somewhat dressed while waiting for the tea to finish
Nice looking scene, well put together and believable space...the lighting is a bit dark on the character though, I think. I usually save my characters as scene subsets, or even scenes. As I recall, if you save as a character preset (possibly shaping preset too?) and then load, the morphs you previously dialed won't show up under Currently Used.
Thanks, princessartemis and Storypilot for your Poe comments. Princessartemis, I agree that the Stefan skin looks good on him...but perhaps not as authentic. Still leaning towards the D5 skin, still considering Doyle... I'm pretty much where I want to be with the morphs, I think. I might not post any more WIPs of him, but I'll post some "final" images in this thread when they're ready. Looking forward to sharing the other character (or characters?) I've been working on.
I agree with "Early Morning Tea" being a tad bit too dark, will work a bit more on that one later on. Currently working on a scene after one of his fight/matches *smiles* ... though, considering it's 4 in the morning, and I've been u since.. urhm.. 8 yesterday morning.. I think it might be a good idea to get osme hours of sleep before continuing *laughs* (Daz is guilty of making me pull all nighters)
Here's another view (edit: now two other views :) ) of the character I posted above. These are straight renders without postwork, and out from under the cover of her moonlit forest. (The one above does have some post in Pixelmator, although very little on the figure herself.)
Beautiful, and--yes--kind of chilling character. I love your first render of her. At first the render struck me as somehow familiar, and then I remembered I've got a WIP scene featuring the same set, with a (slightly) similar-looking elven character wearing the same hairstyle kneeling down at the very same location in the set. I was working on the scene for the Stonemason contest, but haven't finished it up yet. Weird...

Thanks, mmalbert, and others who commented on him!
...love it. Shows there is still lots of llfe in the old generation figures.
here's a real stretch (NAE), a fusion of Sadie and Aiko3 I did back in 2009 in Daz 2.3 (long before there was even a figure mixer). Again the settings for this were lost on the old HD that died. Of course this would be a "easy as cake" today with Genesis.
Scott, your Poe is looking very good! I think the fourth version down looks the best.

I think the updated one has a bit more personality, and I like your choice of hair.
Glutes Volume 0.30
Hip Volume 0.20
Legs Length 12.5%
Body Tone 0.70
Thin 0.40
Arms Length 0.15
Shoulders Width -0.70
Fingers Length Left 0.50
Fingers Length Left 0.50
Left Hand Propagating Scale -15%
Right Hand Propagating Scale -15%
Chest Depth 0.15
Torso Length 0.40
Waist Width -0.10
optional:
Neck Length 0.10
Neck Size -0.10
A work in progress for a possible second entry.
*hugs and waves*
C
Beautiful, and--yes--kind of chilling character. I love your first render of her. At first the render struck me as somehow familiar, and then I remembered I've got a WIP scene featuring the same set, with a (slightly) similar-looking elven character wearing the same hairstyle kneeling down at the very same location in the set. I was working on the scene for the Stonemason contest, but haven't finished it up yet. Weird...
