They did indeed and thank you very much @linwelly.  That set is a real timesaver for me.  I hate lighting - I know how to do it but I don't want to lol.  This gives me some great options to change the look of a render very easily and its quite simple to see what each preset will look like.

As several of you know, I've been wanting to do book covers, (truthfully, I've wanted to do book covers since I was teenager).  So I'm working my way through a tutorial (not finished yet, just got started).  Anyway, I did this scene last night and thought it might be a good piece to practice doing a book cover on.  Its the right size for Amazon (thats about where I'm at with the tutorial lol).  I still have a lot of post work to do and of course, the letters. I used @KindredArts newest Iray Lens FX to darken the scene to a twilight/night.

Oh, that's gorgeous, Sonja! I think it would make an excellent book cover. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

I bought Iray Lens FX, just need to find time to sit down and play with it. I love the renders you've shown of what you've done with it. Very beautiful images!

Thank you!  I have a hard time with having enough space for words and this one happened to work out well I thought lol.  I love Iray Lens FX and if you have Tonal Rage, you can do a color with LensFX and then add another color with Tonal Rage, to get new colors.

As several of you know, I've been wanting to do book covers  [cut]

Kewl... looks very good.  While I don't have my designs on making book covers at the moment... might I suggest...

Place some text into the sceen to use as a guide so you know whicht part(s) will be covered up so you can design around or rather inside them for the main char/theme of the cover that you want to show off.

Now for critique :)...  Char is too dark and skin is too bland for a book cover... also char is against a dark background... needs to pop... probably look better against other side of book.  Hope that helps...  just tell me when to shut my trap. :)

@wgdjohn One of the reasons I post my stuff is to get feedback so I am never going to tell you to shut your trap lol. I may or may not take any advice given but I value it anyway.  This is just my starting point, I still have to pull it into photoshop to make the girl and the column stand out a bit more and to add the text. I can flip it so the girl is on the othere side in photoshop so I will see how that looks as well.

Can't wait. :)  It sorta reminded me of this Frank Frazetta painting in that it has a column and a woman.

Thank you very much!  I'm trying to use more of my stuff, and came across these really cool skins Every time I saw it in my library I would think, oh, I have to try these.  Things are finally settling down a bit and I have a bit more time, so, I went ahead and one of them lol. Really cool product!

I was poking around in my library and came across this little gem called Lake Village.  I had forgotten how good 3Delight can still look.  this is a straight up render, out of the box, no adjustments at all.

The winged angel is very nice and would make a lovely cover. I would lighten up the mage because darker images don’t always reproduce well on covers

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

Thank you Serene Night!  Yes the mage is slated for post work hopefully this weekend.  I need to draw out and lighten the focal points.  And then I need to figure out the text lol.

A clothing question for Sonja,  I remember you using Sickle Dress Rig Genesis 2 Female and it working for male and female... pardon me but I can't remember if you had tried it on V4/M4 clothing also... please let me know if it will work.  TIA

Regarding images... I've been rendering some elements... char and background etc. seperate so that I can adjust either's brightness in Carrara or in post when necessary.  Normally I avoid post since IMO the render engine and lighting etc should accomplish the desired result.

I will check for you, off hand, I want to say sometimes yes and sometimes no depending on the dress.

I totally respect your choice to use post as little as possible.  I actually did not allow myself to do postwork the entire first year I was learning Studio, except for my lightning mage.  I felt, for me, it was too tempting to skip learning something I knew I could do in post.  But, my goal has always been to meld 3d with 2d and really push myself to push my art as far as I can take it.  Plus, I love postwork.  I can't help it, I come from a drawing, sketching background, then started learning photoshop several years ago and just fell in love with it, and adding the 3d aspect to it is really exciting to me.  But, I still try and get my work as close to what I am going for in Studio first, and have no intention of stopping my learning adventure in 3d across platforms.  Still planning to continue learning Carrara as well.  I consider them all useful tools.

@wgdjohn so I tried it on several different dresses, and my answer remains the same lol.  Yes it works on some and doesn't work on others.  Let me explain.  There are two parts to this, an added enhancement to the auto fit and a transfer utility.  The auto fit works on almost all of them, the transfer utility has some trouble sometimes, recognizing some of the v4 clothing items as being there at all.  If you transfer the clothing from V4 to Genesis, and then use the Genesis one, the transfer utility will find it. Like most things with the older content, some of it just will not cooperate.  Mostly the long dresses.  But this utility certainly makes more of the V4 clothing usable by Genesis 2 Females. (The transfer utility -This method is preferred if you want to save back to library for future use, or if you want to add smoothing during conversion to an item that does
    not have it already.)

I found this to be well worth for the enanced auto fit alone - the autofit adds movement bones to the clothing (you do have to move them manually) so you can pose the item much easier as well.

Thanks so much... some is better than none. :)  I'm thinking that the ones that don't work I can load the .OBJs into Carrara and fit around Genesis or G2 then use the DS Transfer utility to add bones just like making clothing from scratch.

If you pick it up, make sure that you read the pdf, pretty sure that it adds bones when autofitting so you can move the skirts etc. manually (have to click on the bone in the tree and move it.  Its really a nice utility to have. I hope she does one for G3-G8

Oh... I've had it since you mentioned it. :)...  just not used it or or read PDF yet.  Spending too much a lot of time learning modeling better and now in middle of Animation in Carrara Video Tutorials by PhilW which is excellent... still have Silo to learn and read a book on Lighting and Rendering by Jeremy Birn.  All that while entering Carrara Challenges and keeping up with my own and others threads.  I was slow before but doing my PT exercises have slowed me down even more... oh well... I'll be back to normal slow in no time, LOL.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

I totally understand.  I can be a bit slow as well.  Part of my problem is there is so much I want to do and learn and not enough time in the day...

An experiment with DForce.  The Queen of Hearts skirt worked fairly well but the sleeves on the jacket just refused to move at all. There is some stretching of the one heart at the bottom. I can fix that in postwork.  I think I like this one well enough to do some postwork on it and see where it goes.  So hopefully, this evening if we don't go camping I can get this and the one with the mage and the night sky done this weekend.

LOVE this one. The lighting, especially the backlight coming through the wings is dramatic. Great job!

I agree. It didn't show up well on my phone, either, and I was in a well lit room.

Try making the arch into a mirror. The reflection would add more drama. Nice colors on this one. The right arm pose is a little too straight. Love the evil queen look.
  • Nice work on the possible book covers. I especially like the one with the wings. Which video tutorial are you working through?

The Queen of Hearts came out great.  What is that little critter?  LOL, I love how you insert some suprising element in a lot of your renders.
