No worries - we really appreciate everything, and frankly, wouldn't know where to begin without you!!

We'll go with just the Quadro m4000 in the main drive.  But just out of curiosity, we are attaching a picture of the box of hte 750Ti.  We didn't realize that it has a differnet GPU.  It says it has NVIDIA features and NVIDIA CUDA (see top left of picture).

Would we get the nvida driver pack from nVidia.com (install the latest dirvers) as well as CUDA?

    Thanks an awful lot!

    Mike & Paul

Iray docs (and some of the DAZ Studio docs do state never mix GForce archietecture and Quadro archietecture, something with the drivers gfetting all confused.

  • Okay, thanks.  Good to know!

We'll just go ahead an install the Quadro card, and return or sell the others.  We found the dirvers for CUDA and Mac OSX, so I think we should be good there too.

Thanks so much!!  Can't wait to get started :-)

  • Good morning Totte,

We've returned the other card and are are ready to install the NVIDIA Quadro M4000 into the MacPro 5,1 which arrived last week.  We opened the M4000 today and are about to install it, and then we looked at the NViDIA Quadro m4000 requirements . . . PNY told us this card will NOT work on a Mac system.  They said the only card they have which is  Mac compatable is the PNY Technologies NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for Mac Display Card, MFR # VCQK5000MAC-PB.

Is this true?  Can the NVIDIA Quadro M4000 work on a Mac system for DAZ 3d Studio - let alone anything else on the Mac system?  The card PNY is reccomending is at least twice as expensive as the Quadro M4000.

Hope to hear from you soon - not sure what to do, and I'm under pressure to produce a DAZ project.  Thanks so much,

    Paul & Mike

Most cards work, but you need to install nVidia drivers "before installing the card".

Then you won't have the "boot screen" as that will require a card with EFI-boot, but then it comes alive when the driver loads.

  • Phew, thanks.

TDhe driver disk we have from PNY is only for Windows systems.  Is there a way to install these dirvers on  hte MAC 5,1 anyway.  We are unsure of what you mean by "a card with EFI-boot" and how to do that workaround (is it a workaround for the MacPro 5,1.).

    Yours,

  • Arew we going to using DAZ 3D Studio on a Windows Partition on hte MacPro 5,1?

  • Hi Totte,

We are struggling still, working our way to DAZ Studio processing.  Would the PNY NVIDIA Quadro M4000, once installed with Windows drivers using Boot Camp and a Windows Partition, boot up on the Windows side and then it will "come alive" ... does that mean that it will, after it boots, be able to function on the Mac side of the partition?

No, I say install the nVidia Drivers on the Mac and put the card in, according to nVidia the drivers works for it.

Totte,  we thought we were finished; you have revived us!!!  Hope we're not complicating this too much :).

We are selecting the quadro M4000 Max OS El Captian 10.11.3 driver.  http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us Selecting Quadro M4000, MAC OS El Capitan 10.11.3 and then we have to choose one of the following and don't know which one to choose:

    Quadro ODE Graphics Driver

    Quadro Performance Driver

    Quadro Partner Certified Driver

    AutoCAD Performance Driver

    3ds Max Performance Driver

    Mosaic Utility

    Mercury Transmit Plugin

Totte, I chatted with NVIDIA customer help, and they say that the card is not supported and referred me to a PNY spec sheet.  Yet it is listed on their page!  When we asked why it was listed but wouldn't work, they said:

" the OS is listed in the dropdown so that the users can select the card and select the OS whichever they have. So it will be convenient for them. It does not mean that the card will work on that OS"

Their reply doesn't make sense.  Maybe.

I just looked at your link and it says that that driver is for the following Quadro cards: 4GB Quadro K5000 for Mac, and the 2GB Quadro 4000 for Mac

We had originally purchased the 8GB PNY Quadro M4000 http://www.amazon.com/PNY-NVIDIA-QUADRO-M4000-ECC/dp/B013W9NES0

The 2GB Quadro 4000 for Mac and the 8GB Quadro M4000 are two different cards.  The Quadro for Mac is diferent from the above link.  Will the driver link you just sent http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/96651/en-us work for the unsupported M4000 (see supported products tab on the driver link just mentioned) work anyway?

    At your service, gratefully,

    Mike & Paul

My ASUS GTX 780 6GB is not supported either but works like a charm, same with my 2GB 750Ti by EVGA, only issue is boot screen.

  • Oh this is indeed wonderful news - thank you!

And sorry to be driving you crazy with all this!  One more question: The driver link you sent says to "Make sure your Mac OS X software version is v10.11.2 (15C50). It is important that you check this first before you install the 346.03.04f02 Driver."  We went ahead and installed OS X.11.3 on the MacPro - will the driver work okay with El Capitan?

Thanks again & have a great night!

I think there is a 11.3 version, but nVidia wont install unless it is the correct version. One thing to remember btw, NEVER install Apple updates until you have an nVidia driver update for that update, When Apple releases security updates, they "tick" the OS version and then nVidia driver will not load. In such a case it's good to have either a second machine and know the terminal or have access to a supported video card just for that.

    Hi,

I got a question regarding performance on my Mac: It's very slow e.g. I have a serious lag (around 1-2s) when I navigate through the scene (mostly with keyboard). It makes creating something pretty painfull (as a hobbist, I'm not relying on Daz to be very fast, but still...).
I don't see any huge performance consumption (or spikes when navigation) in Activity Monitor nor do I see activities on the HD.

I feel, that a month ago, it didn't behave in such manner (was OS 10.11.0 and DAZ 4.8 then).
Rendering is no issue as I can have the Mac running through the weekend or use Reality/LuxRender to receive non-Iray, fast results.

HW: Mac Pro 2.1, 2x Quad-Xeons @2.66 GHz, 16 GB Memory, DIY Fusion Drive (64 GB SSD+2 TB HDD), Apple ATI Radeon 5770 (1 GB), OS 10.11.3

    Any clue ?

    Best regards,

      Peter

    Hellio,

under preferences and video, what is the optimization settings?

Also, when working with larger scenes (where OpenGL is becoming the bottleneck), putting parts of the scene i to groups that you can hide helps alot. Hide what you don't need to see at the moment while setting up the scenes.

    Hi Totte,

Under Preferences -> Interface -> Open GL -_> Display Optimization was set to "None". I've changed it to "Best" and now it feels very snappy.

Seems to have solved the issue !

    Thanks & best regards,
        Peter

Totte, Mike and I just wanted to offer you a huge and resounding THANK YOU for all your help!!!  Your advice was more valuable and cogent than anything I can possibly say here.  Thanks to you, our entire set up is now up and running, and I am finally ready to really dive into the world of 3D graphics!  Just as you predicted, both the MacPro computer you helped us to select and configure, the Nvidia Quadro M4000 card you reccomended we purchase for it, and the driver we downloaded for it (there was an updated driver by the way!) all work exactly as you said they would -- like a dream!!!  We even spoke with a techie from PNY who told us it could not be done and wouldn't work, but thanks to you it not is only done, but works fabulously and flawlessly.  Mike and I are truly in your debt.  Thank you thank you thank you for all of your time and endless patience with us.  You are our hero!!!  :-)  :-)  :-)

Have a great night and thanks again!!!

    Paul and Mike

newbee question: I have installed content purchased at daz3d and others. The content seems to become a total mess in the My Library folder. How do you validate that "stuff" is correct, and is it best to keep stuff in their own deep nested folders or move them about for easier finding and sorting?

All the docs tells me to unzip into the folder, but on a mac it always uncompresses automatically. Files are coming from CGbytes and Renderosity.

The number one rule is that the folders Data and Runtime must be directly underneath the folder you have mapped as content folder.

As for rearranging files and folders, I highly recommend using Categories for that purpose unless you're very familiar with the idiosyncracies of the Poser file structure.  You can easily convert a folder on disk into a Category, and you can't break anything by rearranging items in Categories.

I am not sure if I am following you. Categories would be under the "/Users/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library" folder correct?

All of my content I have been placing is under the "/Users/bs334u2/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library" folder and that is being laid out like:

Categories is a feature in DS that uses a database pointing to the files on disk, so rather than moving the files and folders you just indicate what category(ies) you want to use.  The files are still in their original places, so you can update the product easily, and you can't break something by moving the wrong file.  You can put one item in several categories if you want (for example, if an outfit comes with a sword, you can categorize it both as part of the outfit and in a separate category for weapons), you can put Poser-format and DS-format files in the same category, and you can easily rearrange your categories if you think of a better way to organize things.

  • Oh yes that sound better than what I have been doing. Where can I read up on this? I have been reading the user guide:

    http://docs.daz3d.com/lib/exe/fetch.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/daz_studio_4_x_user_guide.pdf

But that doesn't seem to cover content management or using cateories like that.

Adamr001 has a couple of tutorials on using categories here:  http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/306/adamr001s-tutorials-and-freebies-index/p1

Some of them were for DS3, but they're still relevant.

I'm gonna be doing a reimage soon, and likely just biting the bullet and going to El Capitan.

i'm currently using ds 4.8. I plan on continuing with it for now.

I have the install zip files archived etc.

My question is DIM...should I stick with the DIM I have now, or get it fresh when I reinstall...will Newest DIM not play well with 4.8?

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,585

DIM hasn't been updated, and is pretty software-agnostic
