Ok, things are going apace...need some brain reminders though...

My content library is all on an external...I've pointed DIM at it, but there's some folder I need to move over from the old image to the new, so DIM knows what's already installed, right?

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,956

    Yes,

DIMs manifest cache is in /Users/Shared/DAZ 3D by default (I don't really know if youncan change that directory with settings (my machine is busy so I cannot test that, but that is not a lot of stuff though.

My almost 10k DIM items is about 250MB data.

You can change it in the .ini file.

You're sounding trixty, Mike... SO...anyway to ease doing the content directories? like eding a text file rather than the multiple "ADD" navigate repeat?

The section for Install Paths in the .ini file looks like this:

    [InstallPaths]
    size=2
    1\InstallPathTitle=Recommended DAZ Studio/Poser Content Folder
    1\InstallPath=C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library
    2\InstallPathTitle=My Library
    2\InstallPath=Q:/All Runtimes/My Library

Size is the number of paths, then each path has an entry for its name and for the path to use.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,956

    On OS X it's found in ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/UserAccounts/<username>.ini

But the manifest directory is not in that file. Only install paths, that's why I was uncertain where you change that.

You can add this line to set the ManifestFiles directory:

    OverrideManifestDir=Q:/DIM/ManifestFiles

    OverrideManifestDir=Q:/DIM/ManifestFiles

OK, so for the poster that would mean OverrideManifestDir = /Volumes/<whatever disk>/<a directory>  on OS X

Well, got things set up...ish....Need to reinstall stuff that has components that go into the app folder like AOA lights, Gen X and so on.

Weird thing, when I start D|S it asks to locate Reality.

Now, I own Reality, but haven't installed it yet. While the new DIM install knows about it, the fresh Daz shouldn't yet. There's very little I've transfered over from the old image (this was all done to get rid of some bugs I couldn't solve any other way..not in Daz)...

You probably have reality related stuff in like ~/Documents/DAZ 3D or in ~/Library/Application Support that DS picks up but lacks the rest of it.

I don't think I've coppied stuff over like that, but it's possible I did and forgot it.

I wonder.I have the old Image mounted..wonder if ti's reading off some of that. Daz has never seemed to be like that, while the Mac OS will, to an annoyance.

I was gonna install Reality tomorrow anyhow, so no big deal.

    Hi Totte,

Trying to open a new thread.

    Thank you Paul and Mike!

I'm glad you got it up and running, now have fun rendering and welcome to the truly fun world of 3D art!

If you run into problems, you know where to find me,

    Hi Totte,

I don't know if my recent post stood out:

    Hi Totte,

    Paul & Mike here again.

I've been really enjoying trying to learn Daz 3D, but alas, a problem has crept up. Sometimes when I try to use the IRAY feature my computer crashes.  So far I've only been doing tasks that the tutorials reccomend, like changing the exposure values in the Tone Mapping Editor for the Barefoot Dancer tutorial, but that can sometiems be enough to shut down the computer.  It's happened about 3 times in a half hour period, and I'm worried that I may be doing something wrong or that my computer might be a lemon.  I also bought (among way too many purchasesat the Daz store:) Stonemason's "The Streets of Tuscany". When the Iray is turned on it can be very difficult to zoom in or out, or navigate at all around the set; sometimes the cursor time-dial goes around and around, but it can be a long time before anything move - maybe 30 seconds or so.   As soon as I switch from Iray to "Texture Shaded" navigation becomes easy.  Is this normal?

Again, we purchased a 2010 MacPro 3.46 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon Processor with 32 gigs of memory, 480GB OWC Accelsior PCIe SSD, and a 2.0TB Toshiba 7200RPM HDD.  We also bought a NVIDIA Quaddro M4000 card to run it.  Do you think we might solve the problem by getting a second card -- and if so, could you reccomend one that would work with our setup?  Or do you think I might have bought a faulty machine?  Thanks so much again for any thoughts you might have!

    All the best-

    Paul & Mike

NB:  The driver we have for the Quadro card is not for the specific card but rather for a lesser Quadro with less memory etc but is very similar to our 8GB Quadro card.  Everything seems to work except for the IRAY which crashes the system when using it.

Should we install the CUDA driver?  IRAY Advanced tab only shows CPU not GPU Quadro.

    Thanks as ever,

    - Paul | Mike

    Cuda driver is a must!

  • 3DNewbie3DNewbie Posts: 40

Great - thanks Totte! Mike is coming back this afternoon & we'll download it then . . . I'm afraid my non-techie brains will screw something up ;-)

    Thanks again!

    Hi Totte,

We installed the Cuda Driver, and the Quadro M4000 is listed as a device on the Daz screen.

At first we were elated, but another probelm's emerged . . . whenever I try to load a figure into the Viewscreen, the program shuts down.  In one way this is still better than before, when the whole computer would quit.  Now it's just the Daz program that aborts.  But of course this makes it impossible to use.

Are there any paramaters I can alter in the Daz program that might prevent a program shut down?  Would changing the Medium Threshold or High Threshold numbers do anything?  (I'm enclosing a screenshot of these).  Any suggestions you or anyone could offer would be so appreciated!!

    Thanks so much again -

    Paul

Is this in Iray Preview or OpenGL Preview?

  • 3DNewbie3DNewbie Posts: 40

In the Viewport window I have the Drawstyles Options set to Iray, and in the Render Settings tab, I have the engine also set to NVIDIA Iray.  So I'm guessing my preview would probably be the Drawstyles tab - definitely Iray.

Just to try an experiment I changed the Drawstyles setting to Texture Shaded, the computer let me load and pose a figure, and add a background scene, but then I tried to create a render in Iray, and again, the program shut down.

Since loading the CUDA driver, the program feels incredibly fast; I only wish I knew how to prevent it from crashing.  Hope this is helpful!  Thanks again :-)

Can you send me a crashlog or two and I can take a look. Which CUDA version did you get?

  • ScavengerScavenger Posts: 2,664

Continuing with the fun and games of the new install, all of my content is in the content library...the Smart Content is blank.

I've done the reload meta data a few times, still no go.

Clearly I'm missing 1 thing in particular. Thoughts?

Does anything show up in Content Library > Categories, even empty categories?

I think Categories is missing....shouldn't it be right there under "Other"?

That means the CMS isn't running and/or isn't communicating with DS.  Is the "Start CMS" command available from the options menu?

  • ScavengerScavenger Posts: 2,664

Start and Stop are both Greyed out.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,956

If they are greyed out, hmmm, have you started a firewall blocking the postgres ports used by DS?

  • ScavengerScavenger Posts: 2,664

I don't think so..do you know the ports or processess?

You can see that in the CMS settings under preferences

That says port: 1024.. no addresss..and port isn't blocked.

I do have outgoing to logs.daz3d.com port 443 blocked. Changing that and restarting the program did nothing.
