If there is someone who could and would write these translators and plugins for DAZ Studio, I'd certainly be interested in buying them.

Thing is, you need to sell a couple of 100s to even come close to break even for invested time.

  • inquireinquire Posts: 2,170

Well, right. That's why I was thinking that if Apple wrote a translation application that would go from Open GL and Open CL to Metal, it might very well sell copies. Not only could DAZ Studio users benefit, but Poser users, too, and anyone who wanted such an applicaiton. Isn't such a translation application possible?

And if someone were to write a plugin specific to DAZ Studio, are there not a couple of 100s of Macintosh users of DS? I've asked DAZ3D itself, but never received an answer beyond something like, "a small but important and valued number." And I was told that "we spend just as much time developing the Macintosh version of DAZ Studio as we do the Windows version."

About how many Macintosh users are there? If the number really is under 200, then maybe we really are stuck.

  • I am a mac user and was when I started playing around with Daz and othe 3d programs years and years ago. Thing are getting rougher to work around now than they ever have. On my MBP right now only the beta program is installed, the regular program just disappeared  and I can't even find an install file available anymore. I've searched through my settings in the install manager and the only one that comes up is the public beta install. I checked my settings and everything is checked like it always has been, even in my Product Library it comes up Daz Studio pro 4.x but when I check it out to do a manual download, it only has windows installs available. Are mac users only using the public beta versions now or is there just a fluke with me?? My MBP is 2019 model and runs Catalina os.

I run Daz Studio 4.10 on my iMac with no problems so far but I'm stuck if anything happens to that as I can't find my install file as I had one saved on one of my hard drives and it  crashed recently and it must have been on it. My iMac is a 2013 model, the last model that came with nvidia card in it.

Check if you have hidden any downloads.

  • I've checked all of that, that is what I thought was so strange

  • And this is what it looks like in my product library, no mac version at all available to download at all

    See https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/353851/daz-studio-4-12-pro-general-release-updated/p1#known_issues

Standalone application/plugin installers for macOS are (currently) not available

    • Is available via Install Manager

Have you checked in the Installed tab of DIM to see if it is still showing as installed,  If it does show as installed then Uninstall via DIM then click on DIM's refesh icon it should then show in the Ready to Download tab.

  • It wasn't showing installed or even available so  I unchecked all program settings and rechecked all that I had checked prior restarting between and now it is showing, am downloading now, we'll see how it goes after this. fingers crossed.

  • it installed and seems to ok, now the dynamic clothing plugin is missing, just the basic one is there and no choice to install the other

Check under installed plugins if it has it's serial number

  • no serial number, just basic one there. On the beta version it has the one that takes the serial number but nowhere in the general release just gives the basic one with no other option. can't uninstall the basic like in the other versions so it doesn't overwrite the purchased plugin even if the download for it was available for it.

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,943

Did you install it ? It is a separate installation.

  • I know this, I can't install it if there is no installer available for the mac at this time that I can find. Only installers I can find is for the beta version which is installed through install manager and the general release is only available in windows installer at this time as I have been told and it doesn't even come up as an option in install manager on my mac book pro. I know it has to be installed in order to show up but there hasn't been any way to do this on my mbp. I have the 4.10 on my imac and no problem with either the program or the plugins. Guess I will just use the beta program for my dynamics for the time being or use my imac. Just thought someone else may have had the same problem. I don't usually ask questions here in the forums because I can usually figure out the bugs myself and find a work around, but this had me stumped. In doing searches here in the forums for answers, I have been unsuccesful in finding answers that was why I asked here. Mac users are a minority with no clear answers for things except our systems are getting less and less compatible with Daz. I tried changing over to a windows machine and ended up giving it over to my husband due to the buggy windows operating system.

Thanks for your input, I've been with Daz since Daz Studio 2.1 and I have a huge content library (not as large as some though) that will be unusable to me if many more changes are made to the program. I wish I had the install program for 4.10 again, I would definately take 4.12 off my mbp and install it. I didn't intentionally install Daz 4.12, it automatically was installed without my realizing it until I opened up the program one day to find it that way. I just hope I never have to reinstall Daz on my imac as I have very little problems with 4.10 and like I said, my install program for that went with a crashed hard drive.

Just so I understand, if I were using Catalina, I would still have the option of rendering in iRay via the CPU. Is this correct? I'm using Sierra, and for Render options (all with CPU, I guess), there's Basic Open GL, Intermediate Open GL, NVIDIA iRay, 3 Delight, and Scripted 3 Delight. (See screen shot.) Would I still have the same options? And if so, and I rendered with NVIDIA iRay via CPU, it would not look any worse than it does using Sierra. Is this correct?

The removal of iRay in Catalina only affects the GPU, but  not the CPU. Is this right?

If so, that's bad enough. But, with Sierra, the CPU iRay looks good. The Open GL looks horrirble; the Intermediate Open GL looks a touch better (though I'm not sure what Intermediate means); the 3 Delight looks bad (but I've always thought that of 3 Delight, and there were people claiming it was the best renderer available); and I've no idea what the Scripted 3 Delight is supposed to mean.

From 10.14 and up, there will be no Iray GPU, only CPU, available, at least for now. No one can predict what nVidia does to Iray-CPU in th future, but that would in that case happen in a newer iray build in a newer DS build.

OK, thanks for the responses. So, I guess if it's rendering in GPU, the Macintosh is making use of Open GL and Open CL. Is that correct? Now, if it is, and if someone writes a translator that turns Open GL and Open CL into Metal, then that should make the rendering go faster with a GPU that uses Metal. Is this thinking logical? If so, then perhaps there is a way to get around this quagmire. Of course, a translator may slow the process, but both CPUs and GPUs seem to be getting faster and better. If Apple produced a general translator that did this work, then others besides DAZ Studio users could make use of it. Perhpas a DAZ Studio Specific translator would work faster, but if Apple does at least part of the work, this might inspire others to create application specific translators. (Apple is supposed to be helping in this, but I'm not sure what Apple is doing.)

Not really - OpenGL is OpenGL, with the "lousy" quality is has, doesn't matter if you map that onto metal, will still look like the viewport unless you rewrite the actual openGL render code

Well, then, with what is the CPU rendering? Is there a version of iRay separate from the GPU rendering that can be used for CPU rendering? If so, does that  mean that nVidia is providing a CPU rendering version of iRay for DAZ Studio, perhaps because DAZ3D wants or requires it of nVidia as a part of their mutual agreement or contract?

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,583

Iray includes both GPU and CPU rendering, so at least the current version will do CPU rendering on MacOSX.

  • inquireinquire Posts: 2,170

Wow! We probably should ask DAZ3D to alert us if they are about to release a version of DAZ Studio that does not support CPU rendering on the Macintosh. We don't want another surprise.

And, yes, I've tried Open GL and Intermediate Open GL rendering in DS, and they're not at all good.

That would be a feature of Iray, developed by nVidia. If they drop mac support entirely (which is what a lack of CPU rendering would be with CUDA dropped) then I'm sure it will be clearly flagged.

Sorry to cross post this but I think this is a more relevant place.

Im having some real trouble with GoZ. Just installed zbrush and the bridge from Daz to zbrush works wonderfully, but when i try and use the GoZ button in zbrush back to Daz i get a message saying that "gozbrushtodazstudio can not be opened because of a problem". Same thing happens when i try and open the app from the finder, OS X just refuses to open it.

Ive reinstalled the GoZ plugin through the DIM a number of times and have set the path in zbrush but still no luck.

Has anyone else experienced the same thiing? Alomst feels like its a 32/64 bit problem but both apps are new and are 64 bit so why wouldnt the gozbrushtodazstudio.app not be? Weird.

If you cannot open it from finder Goz Wont work either as the way you start applications from within other applications are using NSWorkspace and Launch which is the same mechanics used by the Finder.

High Sierra. Im on an 8 year old imac and found the newer releases to be slow for me. I am running 64 bit applications with it too.

Exactly my thoughts, but do we have any idea why that would be happening? Seems like the only place i can get the package from is DIM so i wouldnt even know if i could get a different version o

Which version of DAZ Studio are you running? And does ZBrush start manually? (I though it didn't by the quote I did above)

I should probably add that the GoZbrushtoDazstudio.app isnt in the same location as others i have seen in other threads. I saw someone referanced /Users/Shared/ZBrushData2019/DazStudio64/ but mine is in /Users/Shared/Pixologic/GoZapps/Dazstudio64. I tried swapping it to my Zbrushdata2020 folder but that didnt help.
