Oh boy that cannot be fun.  I just ordered a seagate in order to do the same thing - be able to play on Daz while I'm on my lap top.  I was just going to copy the content on my desktop to the external rather than DIMing the content down to the external.  Do you think there is a benefit to doing it one way over the other?  I'm not great at computer stuff so I'm always super leery of making changes/trying stuff out.  For example, I discovered Daz/poser in 2012, kept reading stuff at the forum, thought there was no way I would understand any of this stuff and never downloaded the program.  I finally came back and got the program 5 years late?  Yeah, I'm a chicken and had I done it back then, I'd be an old hand at it by now, right?

The white hair came out really good.  I see a lot of people trying to get the white hair look and saying it is difficult.  If they land on your page, this might be helpful to them.

I was making a fairies type render today.  Everything was going well but then Daz shut down on me.  I should have saved after I created the first character in the scene.  Now, ugh, I think I'll go do other stuff.  I wish there was an auto save function that would save every 5 or 10 minutes like in word processing software.  Oh well, live and learn!

.  I lost a lot of my freebies too, the only good part of it is I will have a lot of fun searching them out again.  And I will be a bit more picky as well.I'm telling you, @dHandle, organizing via categories is the way to go. Let me explain why, besides the fact that I am a bit of a freak when it comes to organizing my content lol. Even though I lost my external drive, because Daz Studio is on my C drive, I don't lose my custom categories.  They are all still linked to where the product was.  And because DIM puts them all in the same place, when DIM loads them the custom categories automatically repopulate with the right content.  So I don't have to add the whole library back to those custom categories. Of course, this does not help if you have everything on the same drive.  But, if you back them up on an external drive with your category structure, if something happens to your main drive you just plug it in and copy all the folders over and your custom categories and content will be right where you put them.

I do custom categories because it allows me to put my content in a system that is intuitive to me.  I have examples of it on somewhere on page 15- to 18.  Dracorn put up an example of hers as well which is somewhat different than mine.  What I like best with the custom categories (besides the fact that I only have to find my content once) is that I can put my content into more than one categorie.  So I can do a category for the whole outfit then break that outfit up and put the belts in another categorie, boots and shoes in another, jewelery in another, for kitbashing and have all of my choices at my fingertips.  If I need boots, I go to my boots and shoes category and I can see every boot for that generation without looking through 20 outfits.

Oh definitely copy the folders over

But, leave the program (daz studio) on your main drive or any plug ins may or may not work.  When you get it let me know and I will be happy to help.  There is a thread floating around that gives very good directons with visual that will tell you how to let Studio know where to find your content once you move it. I copied and pasted my My Daz 3D library folder over which is all of the content.  I made a folder on my I drive and named it exactly that same, then started dragging and dropping the folders inside of the original to the new fold on the new drive.  Took awhile for it to move everything but it was much faster than loading it all again via DIM.

My drive arrives tomorrow, but I may not have time to work on it until next week as I have guests who won't understand why I could possibly want to spend hours in front of a computer, lol. I'll let you know how it goes, and if I need help/get stuck, I will give you a shout.  Thanks a bunch for the info and for your offer to help!

No problem!  I will post a link to the thread that has the info you will need the most. Edited to add - here it is.  Just yell if you need help.  My MIL is having knee surgery on Tuesday but I am usually online when I am at work.  And she won't be home til at least Friday.  I'm taking my laptop while I am staying with her the week after though so I will still be around, if not quite as much.

Hmmm...I wonder if there is a way to transfer Custom Categories structure (along with the content) from one computer to another.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

You can always try putting everything on an external drive and moving it categories and all. Or I don't know is it possible to link the old and the new?  That's a bit over my head to be honest.

I think I read or saw somewhere that while you can export/take your categories with you, the file structure and the names of the locations of the content have to be exactly the same.  So if your content on the desktop is on an "i drive" and the external drive is also called "i drive" - I think it would work.  In my case, my desktop is the c: drive, and i suppose the external will be something like f, g, or i.

I wonder though, whether one could just edit the custom categories export file to globally change "c:\etc" to "i:\etc".

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

That, I have no idea.  Dim finally finished installing everything this morning lol.  Haven't really had a chance to check everything yet but so far it looks good.

My MIL's surgery was cancelled so I will be around a bit more than I expected this week and next at least.

The exported user data only has relative paths, so the location/drive letter doesn't have to match.

That's one of my favorite renders of yours! Lovely work! :)

I'm going to write a short to do list for this month.  I need to have some structure if I want to learn what I want to learn. Have the time I lose track of something I saw that I wanted to learn or read and then forget what it was...Now that the wedding is done, I should be able to get a bit more done, barring any camping we decide to do.

    1. Convert G3F characters to G38 - I will at least have all of my A characters done tonight - I'm up to the E's, so A,B,C, and D are done.  Will update as I go so I don't forget where i am lol.

    2. Read Novica's thread on Geometry Tool & Materials

    3. Do one make up on one skin in Photoshop.

    4. Model at least one item in Carrara by the end of the month. And catch up on the threads and the contest for Carrara

    5. Continue to convert V4 clothes to G3F and keep adding to the Who Knew conversion thread.

    6. Retexture 1 item of clothing in Photoshop.

    7. Make one landscape in Bryce and figure out how to move it into Daz Studio/or use it as an environment in a render.

So, I totally didn't even make many of these goals lol.  I only managed to finish the 1st one, all of my Gen3 females are converted to Gen8.  I did get partially caught up on the Carrara threads but I haven't even had a chance to open Carrara this past month although I believe I have until the 12th on the contest.  I did do a couple clothing conversions but not a lot.

I had some exterior drive issues which sucked up some of my time, and I've worked quite a bit extra last month as well, as I am the one who covers the boss's vacations, and he's take a bit more than usual time off. Fortunately I can be online at work, he doesn't care as long as everything gets done.  So I can at least keep caught up on the online stuff lol.

I did figure out how to use Genx2 to convert V4 to Genesis 3 (and then I can move them to G8) So I am working on that.  I also have most of my V4 Skins moved to G2F so just need to move them one more step and all of my V4 characters morphs and skins will be ready to go for both G3F and G8F.

One of my favorite renders, too.  I love how you brought out a glow to her eyes and highlighted her face and hair more.  NIce job!

Thank you!  I wanted it to be subtle but it definitely needed something.

    7. Make one landscape in Bryce and figure out how to move it into Daz Studio/or use it as an environment in a render.

Finally found some time you katchup on all things Ice Dragon...

You do have a landcape creator with Carrara... also Bryce lanscapes can be used in it.   Was wondering if you couldn't use a forground in DS with one or the other as a background.

Looks like the PokeAway prooducts are for G2 and G3 separately. There may be something similar for earlier generations, I will have to  look. - Looks like there  is one for Genesis but not for V4 and M4. At least not for this PA.

For poke-away... I would pose in DS with clothing... load into Carrara and just add a morph to fix it... then it goes back to DS.

I did get partially caught up on the Carrara threads but I haven't even had a chance to open Carrara this past month although I believe I have until the 12th on the contest.  I did do a couple clothing conversions but not a lot.

Entry thread closes on Aug 11th.  Frantically working the entire night to set up a scene for look... then I'm off to start modeling.

Whew... finally caught up... very nice renders/postwork Sonja.

The brand is Webmd.  My other one is a Seagate and that's what I got this time around.

And, I started downloading about the time I posted above so 8:40 to 11:50 in three hours it has downloaded 499 files.

I have used WD My Passport for years and never had a failure (with tens of thousands of files, 3TB and 2TB ones.)  So I can recommend that one strongly too. Sorry you had to go through that. I'm getting ready to buy another one to back up the one I have now.

    EDIT- Lovely render too!

Thanks!  I really really want to dive back into Carrara.   Bryce is another I would like to be more familiar with althoug I know that you can do landscapes in Carrara as well.  The render I want to do for the contest is based on making a landscape lol.  Summer time is just super busy for us.  We go camping as often as we can and honestly, the state parks don't always have electric sites or wi fi.

I honestly have only had one of the WD and I had issues with it as soon as I got it.  I should have just returned it and got a replacement but I managed to get it working and thought it was fine. I know that any brand can have issues and with only having one, its not really a true representation of a brand.  I am glad you had better success than I did with it, and I am not adverse to trying the brand again, if the price is right and I need one.

    And thank you!
