Anyone else a bit concerned by the pivot towards adult content?

I have nothing against nudity at Daz, but if, like at the other shop, an avalanche of voluptuous breasts were to roll towards me now, it would disturb me. This excess on the often terribly cheap looking promos for an oversupply of skimpwear is the reason why I only buy very selectively from this other shop.

...I hear you on the voluptuous breasts, which is why I seldom purchase female characters and clothing there. Much of the clothing there also fends to be on the rather "revealing" to "minimalist" side which makes it inappropriate for much of the illustration work I do,  However, even here I have noticed this trend towards this over time and finding clothing that is appropriate for younger characters and everyday scenes seems to becoming about as futile as hoping form ore male clothing.

I also notice the base G2/3/8F figure seems to have a specific bust size and breast circumference that if reduced past a certain point, can cause the mesh distort unnaturally which as I have mentioned before can have an effect on clothing fits and particularly, clothing textures.  I haven't worked much with dForce as lately it tends to crash the display driver (which requires a full system reboot to restore) so I'm not sure if the dynamic process would cure some of this to avoid "wavy" patterns and stripes on more petite busted characters. For conventional fitted clothing, this has been an issue since I first started in this and even  working with projection morphs and clothing fit adjustment utilities often doesn't solve the matter.

I don't understand why anyone has a problem with the search option. I type in what I'm looking for and that's what I get. True there is a page or more of items, however what I'm looking for is usually at the top of the list and then other items that may be related to my search in case I typed it wrong and after that I get a wtf bunch of items that don't even closely relate. I still get what I'm looking for near the top and that's what matters.

It must depend on what you're looking for. There have been several things that I was convinced didn't exist at Daz until I accidentally found them in some set.

Most notably: an upright piano. All my searches for pianos got grand pianos, and how many regular folks do you know who have one of those at home? I gave up (though it sucked because her upright piano is really important to one of my characters). By happenstance one of the freebies about a month later was a vignette.... with an upright piano! And then a few weeks after that I was looking for a good vintage couch (by then I'd learned to just start looking at every prop set out there) and found ANOTHER UPRIGHT PIANO! I think my count is now up to four or five that I've found, but none of them showed up in a search.

Likewise with nesting dolls (although I've only found one set). And bracers (generally part of clothing sets). Most of the cat statues have been part of environment sets. I finally found ONE key fob for a modern car, and it was in a set of knick-knacks.

Type in "plush toy" - you get a bunch of anthropomorphic-type critters that aren't, strictly speaking, plushies, and one set of plushies tossed on the floor. Hit up some select pajama sets, though? Bedroom environments? Select Sloshwerks products? THAT is apparently where they're hiding!

I saw a comment where someone worried that PA's would suddenly start focussing their attention on assets for adult/porn use. I just want to say, I personally think that fear is unfounded. I became a PA because developers of adult visual novels encouraged me to do so. Not because they wanted new genitals, or sex related items, but because they needed more everyday assets. In my case, food that can be used to illustrate a meal being eaten throughout a dinner date.

I LOVE THIS SET!! I straight-up cheered when I found it. THANK YOU!!

Perhaps Daz should rein the promo artists in somewhat - some of these move past "showing the product" and into "making the Daz store unambiguously NSFW for no significant benefit".

DAZ is used by so many different artists for various types of art, there's no way everyone will be satisfied in every way. It simply isn't realistic to expect DAZ to conform to very specific needs at the exclusion of those that don't fit those needs. So often I see people get upset with something they don't like or agree with, and the reaction is to ban it for everyone. DAZ provides ways to filter out adult content, and if it needs improvement, we should let them know in an effective way.

One way to encourage artists to produce more of what we want is to let them know what we're looking for. Many of my favorite DAZ artists sell on other sites that allow not only feedback but direct commuinication. I have found most artists are receptive to respectful communication.

Nudity is just nudity, it is not sexy, nor lascivious in the least.

As artists should be able to differentiate simple nudity with lasciviousness, the latter having nothing to do with nudity on its own, but everything to do with anything in the context of eroticism, which nudity is not.

For many years, Daz reps explained the prudish nature of the Store was due to restrictions imposed by payment processors like PayPal or credit card companies. So have all these financial organizations suddenly become more permissive, or is it now evident that this was just a convenient excuse?

I don't think Daz ever said that, it was a common assumption.

Actually Richard someone from DAZ did explain why, but it was a long time ago, a decade or more, so it was probably on the old forums.

Basically iirc there was a couple of things that kept them "family friendly", thier location being one, payment surcharges being another, but the big one was the payment processing system they used, if they had gone "adult" that provider would have instantly dropped them like a hot brick, which would have shut the store for an extended period while they found and coded in a new system.

Obviously things have changed a lot since then, but it's hard to break a habit.

I disagree. Those promos show the product in ways it may actually be used. And the promos themselves are quite well done. Besides, the DAZ store has never been completely SFW, any more than art has ever been completely SFW. It is the way of things.

Easy for us to say, yet some people are offended by nudity. I'm not making a judgment on that. I'm saying that interpretation is individual and we all perceive these things in our own way.

I understand and share the inclination to defend the images on artistic grounds. The issue is that Daz's primary function for me is to be a digital storefront for 3D assets - not an art venue - and these images potentially risk its utility in that regard by courting the wrong kind of social attention. Businesses (justly or otherwise) deemed to sell pornographic content can face significant difficulties in the U.S. and other territories:

    - loss of access to PayPal and other payment processing services.

    - flagging of credit card transactions and bank transfers as potentially suspicious or fraudulent.

    - mandates requiring strict age verification for access. (P-hub and other adult content providers are currently fighting a losing battle against a rising number of new state laws.)

    - increased scrutiny from governments and social pressure groups, and potential demands for censorship or alteration of content.

    - exclusion from Internet search results.

    - blacklisting from public and company networks.

It has been relatively easy to promote a positive image of Daz to non-users in the past. Browsing the store in bits of freetime at work or in public has been mostly non-controversial. I don't see these images as offering any benefit worth potential upset of that state of affairs.

I'm not sure why we have to go from one extreme (old Daz - can't show shoulders) to the https://www.daz3d.com/sf-gemling-body-jewel-megapack-genesis-9 promo that consists of clearly unnecessary nudity. The images aren't there to sell a character (in which case some might understandably want to see all parts) or piercing/jewels for genitals, so yup, I think that one went overboard. On the other hand, there are warnings for mature conduct on clothing that are simply just a little skimpy.

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 99,461

The shoulders thing applied to underage characters, if anything, it wasn't a general rule (and it wasn't stated by a Daz rep, as far as I an recall).

Perfect way to fight back aginst this type of unreasonable pressure IMO. DAZ has been dealing with this for a long time, so i assume they know what they are doing and I am thrilled to see the site becoming less censored.

@SilverGirl, I just finished going through my props and adding them to categories that made sense to me. Some never were categorized beyond 'Props' or 'Prop' or were something weird, and 'Musical' is one that isn't always used. If you don't have the upright pianos, look at the sets https://www.daz3d.com/collective3d-portrait-vignettes-old-west-1 and https://www.daz3d.com/west-saloon. The older one is Iray as well as the newer one.

If you have the time, review the props and environments that you have and make sure the props are assigned to Smart Content > Props categories that you will think of when you need it. Like put food in food and not in kitchenware or decoration or vice versa on in Other. I sorted Toys also and plushies/stuffed toys got their own sub-category. Many were hiding in Decoration.

@xyer0, If one is doing a naming structure for a computer you have to go from the major level down to the lowest level. For example, Instrument, Piano, Grand; Instrument, Piano, Upright; Instrument, Pianaforte or if in a machine shop - Washer, plastic, 1/2 inch, Washer, metal, 1/4 inch, Washer, metal, .5mm... But it would have to be behind the scenes on a commercial site, although I do look up computer items easily using that method at MicroCenter.

I am certain that DAZ thought this through.  I can't imagine the marketplace getting too crazy.  They probably won't stick the landing but I think they will find a point where we can all co exist.  As people have mentioned its not like there hasn't been racy stuff in the store before some of which probably warranted filters.  I think once we find the new normal peoiple will be comfortable with it.

In terms of balance i have a feeling that the sheer pace of releases will necessitate normal bundles.  I think there are almost as many core g9 masculine figures as the entirety of core genesis 3 males.  Business and Formal wear will shgow up and hopefully it does well.

Thank you for the recs; I'm actually using the piano from https://www.daz3d.com/i13-visions-of-the-past - the promo render really doesn't do it justice, IMHO. But I really appreciate it, and maybe someone else will find their unicorn upright in one of those links!

I finally gave up on the smart content and just spent a couple weeks going through my asset list and copying pictures and lists into various .doc files so if I need, say, furniture, I pull up the "props - furniture" file, or a pair of shoes, I go to the "wearables - footwear" file. It was a time-consuming PITA because an environment often went into both an environment file and then three different props sub-files, and multi-part outfits went into several as well, but now I know exactly what I have and where it's at (I copied the file path to find the asset under each one). Now I can easily identify whether I really need that new set for the telephone, or if I already have one buried somewhere. (And it means I can see what the props ACTUALLY look like in a reasonable size instead of the tiny little preview. Sometimes yeah, I do need the telephone, because the one I have is not that great.)

@SilverGirl Here's another one! It doesn't come up on a "piano" search either, even though "piano" is in the text of the promo page four times.

Ya all wait untill next month when we start welcoming artists from Renderotica :D

Personally I dont see a problem as long as it has functional filtering for those who don't want to see any of it.

As long as its legal and makes the store prosper, we all prosper.

I think it's fine. That one is unleashing a primal scream. Those morphs are, on the whole, very expressive and would be great for exaggerated emotions and especially for toon characters. Other applications are left to the viewer's imagination.

THANK YOU, Torquinox. I was just writing someone else how this is the only new release I'm even vaguely interested in today and that I wished Zev0 had a G8 version as well because there's one morph/pose in there I don't think you can achieve any other way. (And no, I don't intend to use these poses for what you're thinking. I want the throat bulge combined with cheek puff for a scene where I have to change someone into a frog.)

For the record, as someone who makes Stories That Happen To Have Sex Scenes In Them Not Sorry About That, I am always interested in "adult content" tools, but I also believe in strong filtering/hiding options, because if you don't want that in your store you should be able to opt out. What I dislike is when people try to take the "NO, it shouldn't be here at all" attitude, especially if that means "... and YOU can't have it either," which it almost always does.

I'm not saying the Daz store should become That Other Site. I do note that I'd love it if a lot of the kinds of tools I can ONLY get over on That Other Site came over here because personally I find the processing/fulfillment stage over there very dodgy and I have a special quarantined card that I use only there, to stave off the inevitable. (And, for the record, it's the kind of Draconian, we-must-force-the-adult-content-people-out-of-business-financially attitude already described upthread that forces them to use a fairly skeevy fulfillment system in the first place. Also for the record, I have never had a fraud incident there. Yet.)

Glad to help you, @columbine . I understand and largely agree what you're saying. I've bought a surprising number of items from that site myself. I think their checkout method is fine - Not worried! They run it through their all-ages company and cgbytes appears on the bill - Very discreet, if you ask me. And as I said in an earlier post, those expressions seem quite expressive, not just for any one thing. Have fun and I'm sure Zev0 also thanks you laugh
