I always thought G2 looked very stylized and unrealistic and am happy to see it looks great in FilaToon! Although I'm finding some areas on clothes or hair don't take the toon outlines. Like on the sleeves here. Does anyone know why that is?
Theer is a brand new, hot off the archiving tool update for Default Resources which should address this issue.
OwO
I look forward to testing it out once i'm able to!
EDIT: Very happy to report that the issue is fixed now!
Yes. You need a rim with geometry to show the outline. If the mesh ends with a flat edge then there's nothing to show the outline. I have fixed it by creating a geograft of just the hem, but a much quicker solution would be to open the texture map of the shirt and draw an outline on the sleeve where you want it, then save as a new map and load that instead. Its fake, but it fools the eye enough to be believable.
OK, thanks.
Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention! Good eye! :D
That's great news! Thank you so much, Richard! And please thank the Devs for us!
I'm wondering if the Thickener Plug-In would address the issue? https://www.daz3d.com/thickener-plug-in Does anyone have it and can confirm if it does? I don't own it but have been considering getting it. If it helps create edge outlines for the FilaToon that would be an added incentive to pick it up.
The only reference to the thickener plug-in I've seen is by Crosswind on page six of this thread... saying the results were not good.
I experimented with a basic outfit created by punching a hole in a Plane Primitive for the neck.
The first image shows the outfit before applying the Thickener, while the second image demonstrates the outfit after using the Thickener to add thickness.
As expected, the Thickener allowed me to achieve the desired outline of the edges.
That looks promising. I don't have Thickener... do you have to do the whole obj? or can you apply it for example just the sleeves :)
Oh that's great news! Thank you for sharing your results!
The Thickener has "Facets to thicken" setting.
We can choose where to add thickness from the following options:
"All facets": Adds thickness to all meshes of the object.
"From selected surfaces": Adds thickness only to the selected Surface Group.
"Selected facets": Adds thickness only to the selected meshes. Selection is done in the Geometry Editor.
To add thickness only to the sleeves, select the sleeve meshes and choose "Selected facets", or create a Surface Group containing only the sleeves beforehand and select "From selected surfaces".
Thickener allows us to create two types of thickened objects: static and dynamic.
Dynamic thickened objects can conform to the deformations of their original objects (although not automatically). This means that if we pose a character differently, the thickened clothing generated by Thickener will adjust to match the new pose (again, this is not automatic).
The reason for "not automatically" is that after modifying the original object, we typically need to toggle the Enable option of the dynamic thickened object to update the thickened version.
However, when we advance to the next frame in the Timeline, the dynamic thickened object is automatically reapplied, ensuring seamless deformation during animations.
I think we've gotten a bit off-topic from Filatoon.
More experiments with FilaToon, specifically trying to come up with some hair settings I like.
Also messed around with layering seethrough outfits. The main shirt uses the Masked Threshold to make the opaque parts look better and cast shadows properly. I then created a geometry shell that goes inwards with the Masked Threshold set to 1 (so it appears seethrough) and turned turned off cast shadows. Combined, you get a pretty decent effect that renders nicely.
Of course, it would be much better if Filament supported dithering for opacity, which is what most modern videogames do in order to avoid the numerous depth-rendering problems that come from using opacity maps on things like hair. If you use anti-aliasing and render out the image large enough, the dithering wouldn't be noticeable.
@TheNathanParable That looks really good - I like the skin too, it very much reminds me of your 3Delight Visual Style Shaders! Nicely done!
To anyone having trouble with glass in Filatoon: Remember to tell the geometry shell to hide it's corresponding surface.
Played around with the Color Grading in the Filament Options. What do you think?
Hi,
So, I had computer issues and ended up doing a fresh Windows install. Last night I finished installing all the Daz content and decided to play with the G9 Toons, since I have an extensive collection of G8 content I've been reluctent to switch. Well when adding the Genesis 9 Toon Feminine it said it couldn't find FilaToon - Base.dsf and FilaToon - Outline.dsf
From the Log:
[WARNING] :: Could not resolve: /data/DAZ 3D/Built-in Content/FilaToon/FilaToon - Base.dsf
[WARNING] :: Could not resolve: /data/DAZ 3D/Built-in Content/FilaToon/FilaToon - Outline.dsf
I checked and it is missing, I decided to manually install them, so today November 18th, at 11:21pm EST I manually downloaded the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, then purchased and downloaded Genesis 9 Toon Essential Shapes Bundle, unzipped them and looked through the folders and sure enough those two files aren't there.
Even stranger is how that after searching the internet it looks like nobody has had this issue.
Any idea why they are is missing and how to get them?
Any other ideas are welcome too.
Thanks, J.
Did you download Genesis Starter Essentials 1 2 AND 3? :)
Hi, J. Did you make sure to install all three of the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials? https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/8933401/#Comment_8933401
Default Resources for the shaders
Yep. Installed all three in the install manager, removed reinstalled, it still gave me the error so I manually downloaded them, unzipped them and looked for the files, and they weren't there. So I re-downloaded the three files, unzipped them again, and sure enough those two files are not in there.
Hold up, I just checked the DIM again and it has a different file size. Do you have a Mac? Otherwise there is an issue where the update from October isn't universally updating the source files.
The file sizes displayed in the "Ready to Download" and "Installed" tabs are significantly different. This is because the "Ready to Download" tab shows the size of the archive file, while the "Installed" tab shows the size of the extracted files.
Additionally, since an update for "Genesis 9 Starter Essentials" was released on November 19, 2024, the file size may vary before and after the update.
Those files correspond to the actual filatoon shader, so they would be part of Daz Studio "default resources" pack not the G9 essentials.
Just out of curiosity, what is the essentials update supposed to fix? What issues were addressed since the last update in October?
If I had to guess, likely fixing the G9 toon characters to use the updated outline shader that doesn't generate shadows off the shell.
You can find the details of the updates provided on November 19, 2024 for "Genesis 9 Starter Essentials" under "Resolved Issues" on this page.
Here are the details:
2024-11-19 Updated:
Yeah, I had previously checked that and according to that log, the file Daz is claiming it is looking for isn't even listed as a file. So, that doesn't help.
Also, since this Windows install is fresh, and the only thing installed on it are Daz programs, I just restored back to a few days ago when I first installed Windows, Installed DIM and had it install all Daz content. Started Daz Studio, tried to add Genesis 9 Toon to the scene and Daz Studio crashed, it gave me a new error, "DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\dzfilamentapi.dll"" According to the Internet that means there is some residual Daz info somewhere from the previous install, which shouldn't be the case as I refreshed Windows back to how it was when Windows was first installed. So, anyways, I refreshed again, ran a cleaner that made sure there wasn't a single file or registry key that wasn't from the original Windows install, then installed all the Daz content again, and got the same error.
So, I'm going to blow off the hard drive and re-install Windows all over again, and once again install only Daz and see what happens. If another error exists, I'm just going to stop trying to deal with this for a while until Daz gets itself sorted out.
So, I may update this post once with the results, but maybe not.
Thanks,
J.
