Details of the roof ventilation on the Ice-cream/frozen custard stand:
I think it is coming along nicely!
I did some rough mockups of the ice-cream stand with Lo-rez characters.
Then I did some more detailed character studies for the scene. Thing is, it is going to definitely max out my
processor to eventually get a scene filled with enough characters to make a crowd.
Latest progress on the building.
Looking really good!
What kind of low-res characters are you using?
@Hylas Was using some Lorenzo Lorez and Loretta Lorez. Thank you.
I think what I need to do is plan my crowd characters in layers of distance from the camera and render
them in groups to layer on the background. Then, I can render them and compose them in Photoshop.
That will save memory I think. I didn't have time to sit in the coffee shop here and wait to finish this render.
But it is enough of a test to begin seeing the light.
Update: I am trying to judge how much resolution I need for the ground texture. Initially, I was thinking of
modeling in low-poly the whole block for background, but I may scale back the project and just do the
parking lot at the moment. To do otherwise might be to get carried away and to bite off more than I can chew
with the size of thhe project and the memory required.
^ well, if you don't need the reflections in the windows you could give now-crowd products a try...
Haven't actually used any of them myself, so this isn't a recommendation, just an idea.
@Hylas. Interesting idea with the now-crowd, but the ourfits and character typed of the Now-Crowd products are a little but unpredictable. I would like to design mu characters with a little more attention to thhe particular poses and interaction. For some purposes, it may be the right product though.
Here is a little beat up stool that I made in Hexagon last night before heading to bed.
Update: Downloading Substance Painter to up the quality of my texture creation. Will see where that goes.
The background for my building is being planned and laid in.

Character Studies
Aside from having characters, it is important to study the kind of things people do while standing
outside an icecream stand or anywhere they congregate. It isn't random, there is a context that is
relevant to the place.
I like the concept of the crowd bilboards, but that doesn't give me enough control over the context.
These are sketched studied quickly capturing what is going on at the scene in the first two images.
Of course the action is always changing but you capture little moments and interactions.
The next step is to create a series of poses that represent things that commonly go on.
Actions:
Simple Gestures
My sister's son is pretty clever and fast with modeling. He is helping me with some props.
He made fast work of this knife model this morning.
The latest iteration of my Icecream/Frozen Custard project is modeling some cups, custard and spoons.
The icecream looks like an easy modeling job for ZBrush.

Some solo poses for G2M
icecream, frozen custard cups
Update: with the frozen custard
Did a little modeling experiment in ZBrush and this is actually about the easiest sort of thing to model
in ZBrush such an uneven build up surface:
Took the same poses from the G2M set above and made roughly the same pose set for G3M.
Will post them online to share.
Bookmarking a list of cars that are convertible or have moving doors and trunks for posing people in.
I am looking for cars that people could sit ini the open trunks, like an SUV, pickup truck, etc.

Renders of some stacking chairs commissioned in the last day. Building a library and maybe soon to
produce some actual Daz3D store products at this pace if I can get it together to package some things
all proper-like and get some packaged stuff all accepted.
One big hurdle is going to be computing power. I definitely need to speed up my computer to get some
better renders kicked out the door on the reg.
some props being built to outfit the parking lot of the icecream stand.
Adjusted Cup/Spoon Proportions
Finally, a render....
A little side-render using the following products:
One odd detail is that I used FaceApp to age the render, put makeup on her and drop a sly smile on her.
Here is the original:
Just came across your thread, @Rakuda - your drawings are excellent! I'll be following your progress on the modeling for sure. Cheers!
- Greg
Thanks for coming by my thread @algovincian
Glad you like the sketches. I have fun with them. Do you draw too? I just went to the art store to refresh
my pens and Shazzam! they were all on sale! Yay! My car is going to be out of comission this next week.
And this means definitely more bus riding and more time to sketch.
Here is some more progress on the modeling!
Still going 100 miles an hour getting these projects knocked out.
Have a still figure droped in for scaling props.
Relative to the building model.
Up close and detailed with the signage:
Update: Here is a row of distant low-poly houses.
I told the guy helping me with modeling the background details that Iit will be great in the end to get the
camera in close and can see the perspective shots. It is like when I was a kid building a miniature railroad
on a table in the basement. Would be interesting at some point too 3D print some of these objects.
Thinking of getting this tree set. It looks really good for setting up some trees on the perimeter of
my scene! Question is how much memory they will consume. Looks like some pretty detailed
trees. Probably going to have to set up some predictable camera points and render out some
360 HDRi domes to conserve memory.

I wish I could draw like you - if I could, maybe I wouldn't have wasted so many years trying to get a computer to do it lol (not that it's any where near on par).
Your Drewes project reminds me of a place down the street from where I live called the Goldenrod:
Makes me think of exactly what you were talking about as far as character studies go, and how a random crowd really isn't random (and our brains pick up on it).
- Greg
@algovincian It is just a matter of finding the time to sketch ideas up a little bit here and there. I always keep a little sketchbook and some pens on hand. Yes, that Goldenrod looks like just the kind of similar place that draws a little crowd. Love the old signs.
You are right I think about things not being completely random. People move like a school of fish sometimes.Even when they are not completely aware if it. There is a choreography and a flow of action. It is fun to capture just the essential details of a scene and then use those notes or shorthand later to unpack and perhaps base some poses or interactions on something seen.
I bought that forest building product. I am pretty pleased with it. It isn't as processor-heavy
as I thought it might be because it is really just billboards or simple curved planes.
Looking forward to working trying this tree set out.
August Project
Ok, I have another project that is starting and it will be modeled in a few weeks. This means that beween now and then I need to get the Icecream stand completed and get a good number of renders out with some people and action going on in the scene. So the second project is being built as this first project is winding up.
Here is a preview of the new one coming out. It will involve a model of this fountain. That model is being sculpted now. The fountain is from Portland, Oregon.
